Chapter 40 - Tracking the Hitman

1826 Words
Doctor Gavino worked tirelessly over the next three hours to see to Alexa’s injuries. Upon his arrival at Castello Romano, the older Italian doctor was at first shocked to hear that his patient was Alexa. The same person he had recently treated, after being attacked less than a day earlier, but he immediately got to work, nonetheless. Alexa’s left arm had a rather nasty defensive laceration running diagonally down her forearm which needed to be stitched up. Eighteen stitches in all, but that wasn’t what had the doctor worried. The severe bruising and swelling around Alexa’s throat appeared quite tender and he decided it would be best to get some scans done, just in case she did in fact have a fracture or worse, something was broken. Perhaps he was overcompensating, but Doctor Gavino was always thorough with every single one of his patients. He wanted to be sure that there was no further damage internally. After stitching up all of Alexa’s wounds, the doctor had her throat x-rayed to check for any breaks of fractures while she was still unconscious. He found the results quite pleasing soon after, given that there were no breaks or signs of a fracture whatsoever. Furthermore, he prepared the ultrasound machine with the intention of scanning Alexa’s womb. He needed to check if there was any trauma to the foetus. And of course, Dante insisted on being present for this scan. He needed to see that their child was alive, with his own two eyes. After lifting her top up to reveal her exposed flat stomach, the doctor squeezed a cold gel onto the base of her belly before lowering the transducer probe down and sliding it along over her skin from one side to the other. Dante watched the large wall-mounted monitor with obvious concern, unsure of what is was that he should be seeing. The screen was mostly black with shadowed grey and white lines that changed every time the doctor moved the transducer probe around. He had no idea of what to look for. This only caused him to feel more and more panicked with each passing second that the ultrasound continued. Luckily for him, Nicola was a good friend to his capo and the larger man stood with his hand resting on Dante’s shoulder as they watched and waited for news. The doctor seemed very focused on the monitor while he moved the probe around, until finally he seemed to locate something. “Ah, there we are…” the doctor announced with a smile. “Everything looks alright from here… I’ve just got some quick checks to perform.” But Dante was feeling rather impatient. “Is the child… alive?” he pleaded, feeling more helpless now than he had ever felt before. The doctor then proceeded to fiddle around with the machine before manoeuvring the probe slightly lower, down into the centre of her pelvis. The moment the sound appeared, everyone seemed startled by it. A continuous soft ‘thudding’ that appeared to echo off the walls of the room. Turning to face his Don, the doctor smiled as he spoke. “Do you hear that?” he queried proudly. Still, Dante stood in confusion, waiting for more information. “Yes… what is it?” he asked with a frown. The doctor chuckled for a moment before he made his announcement. “That is the sound of your child’s heartbeat, Mr. Romano.” Dante’s eyes began filling with tears as they widened in astonishment at the news. His child… it had a heartbeat! “The child… it’s alive?” he asked in disbelief, furrowing his brows as Nicola pulled him in for a sideways hug. “There, see? Told you! Nothing to worry about.” Nicola beamed happily. “If the kid’s anything like you, capo, we’re in a whole lot of trouble.” Everyone laughed at that before Dante wiped away the tears from his eyes and glanced down at the woman carrying his child. She still lay unconscious on the medical procedure bed, covered from her waist down by a warm blanket. Stepping in closer towards her, Dante reached across and took her hand in his, making sure to be careful about the canular she had inserted on the top of her hand. She looked so fragile right now, battered and bruised. He hated himself for even allowing it to happen. Once the ultrasound had been completed, the doctor wiped away the remaining gel and then pulled her top back down to cover her stomach. Deciding to have her moved up to a room that she would be more comfortable in, Dante discussed the doctor’s findings with Gavino before having her carefully moved up into his master bedroom where she would remain until she was healed. Soon after settling her into the new room, the doctor departed, promising to return the next morning to check in on how Alexa was faring. Dante thanked him for his incredible service and loyalty to the family and saw the doctor off before returning to his room to be by her side. He wanted to be there when she finally woke up. - Meanwhile, both Roberto and Matteo were walking beside one another, headed down the hallways and on their way to find their big brother. After telling his brother everything he knew about the treacherous plan to kill off both Dante and Roberto, Matteo felt as if a weight had been lifted up off his shoulders. Deep down, he knew that he had made the right decision by telling Roberto. As they passed by several men standing guard at a doorway, Roberto called out to one of them in Italian. “Ehi, qualcuno sa dov’è il capo?“ (Hey, does anyone know where the boss is?) One of them nodded, pointing up the staircase as he gave his reply. “Nella sua camera da letto, Signor Romano” (In his bedroom, Mr. Romano.) “Grazie.” (Thanks.) Roberto replied with a nod of his head. The two brothers then began ascending the staircase, headed up towards the master bedroom located on the third floor. They had news that would blow everything right out of the water! - Nicola and his team had been working non-stop since they had been given the task of locating the hired hitman that had stabbed Alexa. And at long last, they had found his exact whereabouts, having received a visual confirmation that he had been sighted leaving the De Luca Estate in his car. For a homeless man, he certainly had an expensive car; a bright red Bizzarrini 5300 GT to be exact. The hot muscle car’s engine roared to life before screeching backwards out across the length of the gravel driveway, the car quickly correcting itself and then speeding off down the road with the hitman at the wheel. Bingo! It was time for them to make their move. - Following along after their intended target for only a short amount of time, the Reaper’s henchmen found themselves in the middle of an isolated location out further towards the countryside. The hitman had stopped at a small farmhouse around fifteen minutes away from the De Luca’s estate. He pulled his car into the driveway and drove down to park right outside of the farmhouse before getting out and heading for the door. Pulling their SUV’s up out of view from the house, Nicola used his binoculars and watched as their target stood at the door waiting. Shortly after, the door swung open and a petite looking Italian woman leapt out from the open doorway, embracing him with her arms while wrapping both her legs around his waist. The two shared a passionate kiss before he walked them inside, still holding her petite frame up as he closed the door behind them. Lowering his binoculars, Nicola narrowed his eyes as he gave his command to his waiting men. “It’s time. We go in, grab him, then get back out. Deadly force is to be used only where necessary and avoid casualties wherever possible.” he ordered, adjusting his black leather gloves on each of his hands. All eight of the men who had come along for the mission were dressed in black clothing, wore gloves and tactical boots. They were dressed like this so that no one could identify who they were, should there be any viable witnesses when they were finished here. Leading by example, Nicola then grabbed at the black balaclava he had been wearing as a beanie on top of his head until now, pulling it down to cover his face, as did the other men standing around with him. Each of them was fully armed and prepared for anything that might happen. They were also well aware of the hitman’s rumoured skillset, so they all expected him to resist and put up a fight when they came for him. “Alright boys, let’s get this over with.” Nicola commanded. “With me.” With that, their leader turned and began leading the team along, crouched down as they headed towards the farmhouse in perfect formation. - Roberto made sure to knock on the door as both he and Matteo arrived at the master bedroom, currently being guarded by several armed henchmen. ‘Knock, knock, knock…’ This time, however, the henchmen had recognised who these two men were and allowed them access to visit with their brother. “Yeah?” Dante’s soft voice spoke through the wooden door separating them. “Dante, it’s us man.” Roberto announced casually. “We need to talk. It’s urgent.” Seconds later the door opened inwards to reveal the Don wearing his white dress suit shirt, now half unbuttoned and a pair of black dress pants. Though casual, he looked quite handsome, even with his hair as scruffy as it was right now. His emerald eyes flicked from one brother to the next before he spoke. “We can talk later, Alexa is resting.” he commanded, beginning to close the door on them. But Roberto was not taking ‘no’ for an answer. He immediately jammed his large shoe between the door, wedging it open and preventing Dante from closing it. Rolling his eyes, Dante glared at his younger brothers for a moment. “Roberto, now is not the time.” Dante warned. “You’re gonna want to hear this, Dante, believe me.” Roberto admitted confidently, with a serious expression on his face as he stood staring his brother down. “Please Dante, just hear us out. It won’t take long.” Matteo added from his position beside his taller brother. After mulling it over for a moment in silence, the Don then took a step back, opening the door further and allowing them access to the room for a brief talk. “Fine. But make it quick. And remember to keep quiet.” he reminded sternly.
