Chapter 4

At Adam's Group Enterprise. Alicia stood at the gate of the big complex building. She was wearing her pale gray sleeveless shirt and a tight gray skirt. She was rehearsing how she would break the news to Jackson when a vacancy for a financial assistance job caught her eye. Her eyes beamed, and she quickly went through the requirements and decided to apply for the job even though it wasn't her major. Luckily, she had her CV with her as she always carries it wherever she goes since the job hunt. She excitedly walked into the front lobby and approached the receptionist. She inquired about the job, and she was told that the CEO himself was interviewing for the position at the moment. The receptionist gave her a lucky-you smile and took her CV. She asked her to wait at the reception while she went into her boss’s office. Alicia sat on the soft blue couch at the reception with her heart pounding. Hard. ‘The moment is finally here’ She had a million thoughts. These thoughts weigh heavily on her, so much so that she offers a silent prayer to God. The lady stepped out shortly. “He will see you now, ma'am, you can go in,” she said to Alicia as she pointed to her the direction to his office and Alicia's heart skipped. ‘Why is it too easy to see him?’ She wondered to herself. God must really be on her side today. Alicia followed the direction till she was standing at a transparent glass door with gold stripes. With a shaking hand, she knocked on the door. “Come in”, she heard his deep cold voice and her heart fluttered. She stepped in, and her eyes met his handsome face with a perfect chiseled jaw. His focus was on a tablet in his hands, so he didn't spare her a glance. “Have a seat,” he said, with his eyes still glued to his tablet and Alicia sat down quietly waiting for him. Her heart was pounding. When Jackson finally looked up and met the eye of the person sitting in front of him, he was stunned at the familiar face….he searched his brain to remember where he had met her, but he couldn't. But deep down he knew he had met her before. “ Am sorry we have met before?” Alicia’s heart rate doubles like she's been dragged down into a swamp of despair. It’s overwhelming. She rubs her face, trying to gather her thoughts. She can't tell me anything, at least not now. “ No..no. "I don't.. don't think so,” Alicia stammered, and he looked at her askance, still unsure. Alicia kicked herself for lying, but how is she supposed to tell him that she was her One-Night Stand, and now she is pregnant? “ Are you alright….am I making you nervous?.... you are shaking,” he smirked and Alicia flashed him an embracing look and hid her blushing face. He picked up her CV and glanced at it“ You are an English major? "Why the hell are you applying for a financial assistance job?” He turned a cold face to Alicia and her heartbeat rose. “I..i am sorry sir, but I am desperately in need of a job, any job at all,” she stammered, honestly. “Why did you leave your last job?” he asked, and Alicia's heart skipped. She stared at him as she swallowed a lump on her throat. “ I..I got fired for doing something stupid,” he arched his eyebrows at her. “ And what did you do?” he still displayed his cold demeanor, and Alicia started trembling in her seat. ‘Why is this man making me feel this way?’ She thought to herself. “ I'd rather not say….sir, it.. it's private,” she said with her heart pounding. He buried his eyes on her and she looked away. Shyly. He cleared his throat, “ Well, unfortunately… this position has just been filled in just an hour ago,” he said, and Alicia’s face fell, her expression forlorn. “However, I am desperately in need of a nanny at my residence for my nine-year-old daughter and I pay quite well,” he said, and Alicia's eyes flick to his, and they’re brimming with curiosity. She was excited but at the same time angry that he was already married, but it was still okay. Working at his house would give her more opportunities to tell him about the pregnancy. Once he is aware, she's quitting the job. She doesn't want to break up his marriage. “Are you taking the job or not,” he asked, bringing Alicia back from her reverie. “ Y.. yes, of course…. "Thank you sir,” Alicia said, and Jackson stared intensely at her. “Are you sure we haven't met before?” he asked again, and she nervously shook her head. “ Very well then, this is my address. "I will expect you tomorrow at my residence,” he said as he slipped his business card towards Alicia, and she took it. Excited. “ I will be there Sir…. "Thank you very much," she said and stood. She was already at the door when Jackson said, “Make sure you bring everything that you need… from now my daughter is your highest priority”, he said with pride and admiration for his daughter. Alicia nods an emphatic yes, but her face flushes. ***** She was really in a good mood today as she waited for Nora to come home so that she could share the good news with her, but unfortunately, Nora didn't come home that night. The following morning, Alicia was singing and dancing as she packed her clothes when Nora got home. “What's up girl, what are you doing?” Alicia turned to her, smiling and Nora smirked back. “It's been a long time since I saw you this happy…are you traveling or something?” Nora asked, really getting impatient. “ I got a job…yah!,” Alicia giggled.
