Chapter one: The genius girl;Maram
Maram! Maram !! Come to my office exclaimed by the Headmaster,Maram ran after him to the office .Mr Oyos the headmaster, said I have been getting a remarkable, tremendous report from your teacher and also, you have brought a lot of trophies to the credit of this school. You have made this school to be viewed as the best school in this community.I called you here to specially commend you and also your calm demeanor and well mannered behavior have inspired many of the students including my daughter.
Mr Oyos continued to eulogize Miss Maram and he told her that one of the headlines yesterday announced that there will be an English and mathematics competition that will be sponsored by a European company.I will give your class coordinator a form that you will fill up and hand in to me within 3 days. Go back to your class my brilliant dude, he humorously added.
She walked in quietly to the class. While the agricultural teacher was teaching the class, the whole class was so happy to sight her except a girl called Maraz who was always jealous of her and often spoke ill of Maram and mostly trivialized Maram's success stories. She sat down, brought out her Agriculture book and left like a page to fill up later, and she continued to take the notes that is being dictated by her mean Agriculture teacher.
During break time, the class coordinator handed over the form to her to take it home and fill it up appropriately.
Mama! Mama!! A shout of joy by Maram as she was approaching their house . Her Mum ran out and asked my Daughter what is causing these sounds of joy from you this evening.
She joyfully said that the principal appointed her to represent their school in the upcoming competition.
Her joy was so contagious that her mother started to sing and dance and they went to their hut . In a jiffy her mum immediately switched her face to a long one and Maram asked her Mama," have you eaten?.
Tears started rolling down her mum's cheek with so much pain in her voice, she said My daughter, this piece of yam in this plate is the only food I kept for you and no other food in this house unless your Baba can be able to catch any animal in the bush to sell or bring it home for preparation to serve as food. She added I can't even feed you how will I then train you in the school.
He started soliloquizing that God gave her a brilliant daughter but no money to train her and she was asking God to send money from heaven to her to train the child He gave her at old age.
All this was happening. They never knew that their father was with a second family in a distant village enjoying his life with the meat he caught in the bush and handed over the money he had to the mother of his children and the wife was in oblivion of this side of her husband's life.
After some hours, they had the food steps of Baba walking like some that had just been running, and he was shouting" this life self !this world self!! I won't kill myself ooo!!!.
He added anybody in the house?. Immediately Maram rushed out to meet her and welcome her. Maram collected his hunting tools to keep in the store.
Baba's facial mean look made Maram wether she could tell her father about the competition exercise. She summoned courage to tell her father, but in a cold way , her Dad responded angrily to go and tell her Mother to bring her food to her. Maram mustered Fooooooood…
Yes, food re-ehoed by the father. As she was walking towards her mother's direction she was sobbing and tears started rolling down her cheeks like an ocean. She was soliloquizing if this was her true biological father, that he has never had a good time with her father, even when others were rejoicing with her. On reaching her mom she was sobbing intensively and her gentle and quiet mother, who was loved by many because of her peaceful nature, pacified her and also she eavesdropped what her father told her.
She sent Maram an errand in order to give her space to talk to her angry father.
My husband, who offended you that your handsome face, is now turning to something she cannot explain. She praised him and rubbed his back and now started to ask him about his day, that they. They are waiting for the lion himself to bring food for us because we are starving, and I didn't see you with any food in your hand or have you sold it ? Please bring out the money. Let's go and buy food before someone dies of hunger.
Mr Okete was dumbfounded, and he just nodded his head and entered his hut.
Baba Maram please talk about our food because I would soon faint. Immediately she fell down on his feet and was demonstrating like she had fainted.Mr Okete ran to bring water and poured on her head ,Mrs Okete mumbled words like give meeeeee fooooooood or moneyyyyy fooooooood.Mr Okete started to look for money inside his hut and came out with some money and was on top of voice shouting Maram! MaraaaaaaMmmmmm !! Come ooo!!! ,Maram was on his way to the house and heard her father's voice. She started running towards their house and saw her mum lying down but her mum opened her eyes and gave her a reassuring look. Their father gave her the money to go to the village market to buy food items.Immediately, Mrs Okete sat down and asked her husband to bring a cup of water to her and, while going to get water for his wife that fainted ,Mrs Okete collected the money from her daughter and quickly asked her to go to the market and tell her friend that was selling maize to give her 4 cups of maize that she will be coming to the market.Maram left with many questions on her mind.
Here comes Mr Okete “take the water.”
She drank and asked her husband to carry her up, and immediately he carried her up and she sat on the chair that was outside the hut.
Sorry Mama, gently but suspiciously said by Mr Okete.
