PROLOGUE
I never understood why people were so desperate to fall in love. Growing up, I had watched enough relationships fall apart to know that love was never as beautiful as people made it seem. Behind expensive dinners and carefully chosen words were arguments, lies, disappointments, and eventually, two people pretending they were still happy because neither of them wanted to be the first to admit that it was over.
Maybe that was why I never wanted it for myself.
I had everything I needed. Money had never been a problem, and neither had opportunities. My family name opened doors before I even had to knock on them, and my position gave me enough power to make sure those doors stayed open. I had built a life where I didn't have to depend on anyone, and I was perfectly comfortable with that.
At least, I was until Aurora Hale.
I didn't meet her under romantic circumstances. There was no slow-motion moment, no instant attraction, and definitely no feeling that the universe had brought us together. If anything, our first meeting was the beginning of one of the biggest inconveniences of my life.
She was stubborn, outspoken, and completely unimpressed by me.
That last part bothered me more than it should have.
Most people became careful the moment they heard my name. They watched what they said around me, agreed with whatever I said, and treated me differently because of my family's reputation. Aurora didn't. She looked at me like I was just another arrogant man standing in front of her, and honestly, I wasn't sure whether I found that irritating or refreshing.
Probably both.
I should have walked away from her the moment I had the chance.
Instead, an accident brought us together, and a contract gave us a reason to stay.
At first, the arrangement was simple. There were rules, conditions, and an expiration date. We both knew exactly what we were getting into, and I made sure there was nothing in that contract that could be misunderstood.
No feelings.
No unnecessary attachments.
No crossing the line.
It should have been easy.
But living with someone changes things.
You begin noticing the little things you were never supposed to care about. The way she falls asleep while reading. The way she gets annoyed when she can't find something and blames everyone except herself. The way she tries to hide it whenever she's hurt. The way she smiles when she thinks no one is watching.
I noticed all of it.
And I hated that I did.
Because the more I learned about Aurora, the harder it became to convince myself that she was only part of an agreement.
She became the person I looked for when I entered a room. The person whose opinion somehow mattered more than anyone else's. The person who could make me lose my patience with one sentence and calm me down with the next.
Somewhere along the way, the contract stopped feeling like a contract.
And she stopped feeling like an obligation.
She became something I wasn't prepared for.
Someone I wasn't supposed to need.
Someone I couldn't imagine losing.
But love has never been kind to people who think they can control it.
There were secrets neither of us knew. Things buried long before we met, connected to families, money, and choices that would eventually force us to question everything we thought we knew about each other.
By the time the truth came out, it was already too late.
I had fallen in love with the one woman I had promised myself I would never need.
Aurora Hale was never supposed to become my weakness.
She was never supposed to become my home.
And yet, somehow, she became both.
If someone had told me before we met that the woman I would once consider the biggest inconvenience of my life would eventually become the person I'd risk everything to protect, I would have told them they were f*****g insane.
But now, standing here and looking back at everything that happened, I know one thing for certain.
Some promises are written with ink.
Others are written by the heart.
And mine had already chosen her long before I was brave enough to admit it.
Aurora Hale was my greatest exception.
