As my father left the room, I couldn’t help but wonder what the doctor would have to say to him, that she couldn’t reveal to the rest of us. Fortunately, they didn’t stray too far from the door and I could still hear their conversation clearly.
Sage and Ember chatted animatedly, seemingly unfazed by the doctor’s intriguing request.
I could see in the reflection of one of the glass doors across the hallway, that Nick was at my dad’s side, his hand gripping my dad’s shoulder as if they were about to deliver bad news.
“I didn’t know whether to tell you and Ember this at the same time…” The doctor began. “But after all the trauma she has just been through, I thought it would be best to tell you first.”
