Chapter 1

1734 Words
Present day... I'm now twenty-three years old living independently in Aquarin , across the country from Clifton where my parents live, also known as, the place I ran away from six years ago. I wake up to the sound of my alarm ringing. "Gosh! I need to find a less annoying piece of s**t!" I think to myself while getting out of bed so I can get ready for work.  I run some hot water in the shower and start brushing my teeth right after I've just made my bed. I get in the shower and do my thing and I decide to wash my hair today so that it can smell great. After showering and drying my hair, I put on a pair of skinny jeans, a lavender sweater, with a sports bra underneath obviously, and I decide on finishing the look with a pair of white converse shoes. I style my hair in a neat bun. After twenty minutes of driving I finally arrive at the cafe and I get down to it. Hopefully he hasn't arrived or else it would've been useless for me to come here at the cafe when I could've just stayed at home and worked from there. "Aloha everyone." I greet my colleagues as I enter the cafe with my bag headed to my office. "Good morning boss lady. By the way, you're on time." Brenda, my assistant manager responds. "You do know there's no need for you to address me as 'boss lady', it makes me feel evil and impossible." I give Brenda a warm smile to reassure her that there's no need for her to call me by any name such as boss or boss lady. "Okay I'll get used to it then. Oh and uhm he hasn't arrived so go grab an apron and do your thing." "Thanks Brenda! A girl can always count on you to watch out for nine o' clock." I beam with joy knowing my Monday is off to an amazing start knowing I'll be seeing Anonymous after a long weekend without my daily dosage of eye candy. I head into my office so I can place all my bags and get to work. I head out and I start serving customers, as usual. My eyes wonder to the door every now and then getting anxious that I might not see him today since he seems to be running a bit late today. After ten minutes he walks in but I hardly notice since I'm busy attending customers. "Ayo dude, nine o' clock has just struck, go do your thing." I hear a fellow waiter of mine whisper to me. I quickly walk over to his table, gosh it's always the same table so I don't even need to look. As I walk over I notice how tense he is, he seems irritated and angry for some reason. Gosh I really hope he doesn't bite my head off if I say one stupid thing. "Uhm good morning. Should I get you the usual or anything different today?" I ask trying to seem calm and hoping my voice doesn't c***k under his intensive glare. "The usual please." His demanding but calm voice sending shivers down my spine. But I manage to keep a straight face and show no emotions. I walk over to the coffee machine and start making his coffee. Decaf, Soy Latte With An Extra Shot And Cream. Anonymous has been coming to this cafe for the past four years. Of course I say Anonymous cause I still don't know his name or what his deal is. I finish making his coffee and walk over to his table. He pays for his bill and gives me a hundred dollar tip. Guy must be loaded hey! I've now grown accustomed to his huge tips. I can tell he comes from a well off family, modestly speaking, from the way he speaks, walks and dress. Not to mention his cologne smells like heaven and his suits are neatly ironed. I walk over to my office in the cafe to check if I've gotten any new emails and to start working. I mean... The only reason I personally come to the cafe is to see Anonymous. I make sure his car has drove off and I take off my apron so I can start working on other things in my office. I check out my emails on my laptop to see if there's anything interesting. And indeed there is... My assistant manager has forwarded me an email. And it looks like the email is from someone named Arthur Lennox... my dad? Shucks! Oh lord does he have an idea what the hell he has done... It looks like he is interested in buying shares of my cafe. Does he even know who owns it given that only my staff members and assistant manager knows. Other than that people outside of this building think I work as a waitress. I stare at the screen of my laptop for some time until I come out of the trance I was in. I log onto my school account and start with my assignments. One thing is for sure, as much as I own a business and have loads of money to live by with, I still wanna go to school and finish my degree. I majored in BCom law and also did an LLB and then did my masters in coperate law and now I'm in my first year of my PhD, which is great because I graduated high school when I was seventeen. Adrien Man I can never get enough of this coffee.  I really needed it after the long night I had yesterday busy cleaning up after those stupid self entitled interns. After a short drive we finally arrive at Dalton Holdings. Danm I hate it here. I get out of the car and put on my straight face, wouldn't want my employees getting too comfortable with their boss. I head inside the building and head straight to my office to get some work done. After a few minutes I hear a knock on the door. "Come in." "Good morning sir, this is the new drawn up contract for the tender in the UAE." Stephanie, my assistant says. "Can I quickly go over it before you go?"  "No problem sir." After a few minutes of scanning the contract I sigh and take a deep breath. "Stephanie, what the hell is?" I ask in an angry tone but I am fighting so many demons right now to lash out on whoever drew up this goddanm contract. "Uhm the new intern." Stephanie replies in a scared voice hoping she won't get her head bitten off. "Oh bloody hell don't we have someone more experienced or someone who can supervise her?" I ask trying to find a way to solve this nonsense. "Sadly, no. Your dad fired the people who in charge of the legal side of things in the company." "Oh s**t! Okay Stephanie I need you to head to HR so we can announce open vacancies and internships. In the meantime, I'll draw up this contract myself cause this stupid intern is trying to sell us." "Uhm... you do know his highest qualification is a bachelors degree?" Stephanie asks in a scared voice hoping I had some sort of knowledge. "Oh bloody hell how the f**k did that happen?! This isn't a studentship for god's sake it's an internship for crying out loud!" "Sir, things were going bad before you arrived. After you dad retired and handed over the company to your brother things have been horrible here at the office. No one might've told you this, but you handled everything so well and did so much improvement in a short period of time. You've run this company way better than anyone has ever done. I understand your brother and your father messed up and that you never wanted to be a part of this and I honestly do't blame you if you want to back out, but do you really wanna give up it all up and let your hard work and efforts go to waste?' As much as I hate to admit it, Stephanie was right. It would be sad to watch all my hard work go to waste. "You may go back to whatever you were doing, and uh don't worry, I'll communicate with HR myself." I say to Stephanie dismissing her. Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if I wasn't on a joy ride for the past couple of years. I mean, others consider it a joy ride, I just saw it is a way to escape from reality. I was in denial of what had happened and it took me four years to accept what had happened and get my life back together. I mean, would things have gone so badly in my family? The only thing I am grateful for is that no one knows me, no one knows who I am and no one knows my story because I always stayed in the background. My family is well known around town but I guess somehow no one managed to find out about me, or that could be because I never really contributed anything towards my family's name.  I've always wanted to be my own person. In school I was always looked at as Jason's younger brother. I was sick and tired of it so I changed schools and no one ever knew about my family. I wanted to have my own identity and I guess that worked out pretty well for me. After all, I am sort of like the good kid compared to my brother. Jason has been known to change girlfriends as if he's changing his bloody underwear, I mean he got three girls pregnant all in one month. I never understood why he did all the things he did, playing women is just plain disgusting. On top of that he would get drunk every weekend and he would be verbally abusive to his girlfriends. He spent all his money on alcohol and throwing parties and buying cars and luxury villas. Gosh I'm even surprised he had money given he contributed towards my dad's company being a huge ass flop. But I guess everyone in life has their own internal demons to deal with.
