Chapter 8

"How are we going to get out now? We can't go through the front door!" Livy said. She looked down through the attic door and then pulled it closed. They all looked at me with worry. "James, aren't you scared of what will happen?"     "You have nothing to fear but fear itself. I was scared at first, but now I am just angry." I replied. I walked over to a trunk and opened it. "This belt has a bunch of holy water on it. Who wants it?" Harry came over. He put it on.      "I found a way to get out and I found this compass. Might be useful." Harry said.     "We have to head north. That is what Uncle Jim said. How are we getting out?" I asked Harry. He held up an ax, pointed at some ropes,  and then the roof. "Brilliant. Is there a ladder so you can reach the roof?"     "Yeah. I'll start making a hole in the roof." Harry said. He climbed the ladder and then swung the ax. It took ten minutes to create the hole. Once he did, he had us climb through. I clutched the Bible as I made my way onto the roof.     "Come on guys. North is this way. No one will spot us. They won't even know that we are gone until the last minute." Susan said. We tied the ropes to the chimney and carefully made our way down the side of the house. "We have to make a run for it. We have no clue how far we will be able to make it before they find out how far we are. Do you think we can do it?"     "Yes. We have to make it to the river north of us. We can't split. Make sure to stick together if we want to make it out alive." I said. "Let's go."     We began to sprint towards the woods, running away from the mansion, hopefully for the last time. "Why was there only one ghost that likes us?" Emit asked.     "I think she knows more about this ritual than any other person. You heard her, she was killed on this land. Most likely by the same cult that wants James." Livy answered.     "Be quiet! You don't want anyone to hear us!" Harry hissed.     We ran for what seemed like hours. My chest burned as I gasped for air. "Let's take a break guys." Bella breathed out. We collapsed on to the ground panting. I leaned against a tree and sighed. "I want to check your arm, James. What that creature did to you was horrid."     "Best wait a little longer." I said. She frowned and looked ready to argue.     "James is right. She needs to keep it covered." Harry said. He wrapped another piece of ripped sheet around the wound. The other is completely drenched in blood. The cloth on my hands aren't as bad and the stinging has gone away for the time being.     "Are we still heading north?" Edward asked.     "We are." Susan answered. "We have a lot of land to cover. After today, I am staying in the safety of my home."     "I second to that." Emit agreed.      "You cut your leg while we were running. Does it hurt, James?" Bella asked. "It appears to be shallow and it has stopped bleeding."     "Just a little sting, nothing more." I replied.     A screech echoed through the air. "We need to run, now!" Susan said. "They know we are gone."     Once more, we took off through the woods. As we ran, branches behind us broke. A tree then flew in front of us, blocking our path. "What the actual f**k man! How can dead people do that? None of this should be bloody possible!"     "Quick, climb over the tree. I'll stall the demons." Susan declared.         "Are you crazy? You'll die!" Bella cried out. "I am not losing you!"     "Go. You need to protect your sister more than anything else. Make sure she gets out of here!" Susan forced Bella over the tree. I watched as pulled out an ax and dosed it with holy water. "I'll see you guys on the other side."     We ran. We ran as the screeches got loud. We continued to run as the roaring and screeches were cut off. Bella paused as Susan's scream rung through the air. A lone tear slid down her right cheek as the scream was cut off, probably due to a brutal death.      "No one is going to believe us about this if we make it out alive." Livy whispered. Sorrow filled her eyes.     "As much as I hate the thought of losing a good friend, we have to continue to run. We don't want the same fate as them." Emit stated. "We will have time to weep for her later. Can we try to be out of these woods by nightfall?"     "We won't be out of the woods by nightfall. We are on two hundred acres. The whole place is covered with trees. We will still be running to the river. We will be up all night running away from the people who intend to use James for their ritual. As much as I hate the thought, most of us aren't even going to make it to the river. It sounds horrid, but it's true. James may be the only one to survive the night. Let's get going if we want to make it."     "It's just not fair. Why did this have to happen to us? Why to James? Why is she so important to them? It makes no sense." Bella exclaimed angerly. "What does she have that no one else does?"     "What are you trying to say?" Livy asked.     "Because of James, my twin died." Bella snarled.     "The f**k!" Harry said.     "I hate to agree with Bella on this one, but I agree. Maybe this wouldn't have happened if James had stayed home." Emit said. Edward nodded in agreement.     "To hell with you all. Livy, do you also agree with them? Kiley? You have barely said a word throughout this whole trip." Harry snarled.     "As f****d up as it sounds, I felt weird the moment I met James." Kiley said.     "Why the hell is everyone gaining up on me? I'm just a damn fourteen-year-old with demons after me. I didn't ask for this." I muttered. I kicked a rock. While they continued to argue, I decided to have a look around me. Nothing special but a bunch of trees.      I froze. Standing in front of me is a woman in all white. She smiled at me sadly. "Hello, young one. I am Tilly." She introduced. I c****d my head to the side, wondering if she is a danger to me and the others. "I assure you I mean no harm, but I can't say that for others that roam this land."     "Why do they want me?" I asked.     "I am afraid that is one I can't answer. There is another ghost that knows, but I am not one. Continue on your journey. The longer you stay, the longer your life will get worse. I wish you luck." She whispered. She faded into the darkness of the woods. I looked at the others who are still arguing. I shook my head.      I walked to stand by Harry's side. I saw the compass on the ground and picked it up. "Come on, I want to go." I said. I grabbed Harry, dragging him away from the group. "It will only get worse from here."
