Chapter 10

1005 Words
"James, why are you stopping?" Bella asked.      "Take a break. Harry, can I see that bag you got? I put some stuff into it." Harry handed me the bag. "Ya'll stay right here. I won't be too far." I said.      I walked away from the group, but made sure they could still see me. I pulled out the cell phone and saw that I had full bars. "James, what are you doing? Where did you get that phone?" Harry inquired quietly.     "I'm making a call. I found the phone is Bella's purse and hide it in the bag. We will be safe for another hour or two." I said.     "How do you know this?" Harry asked.     "Gut feeling." I answered. I flipped through the numbers until I found my uncles. "Bingo." I dialed the number.      "Bella?"     "Wrong. It's James. We are still in the woods. What do you want us to do?" I asked.     "Keep walking to the river and don't stop. There should be enough holy water for two people. You and one other drink the water. I don't care who. Do you have someone beside you?" Uncle Jim asked.     "I do. His name is Harry." I answered.     "Good. Make him drink the water. Listen, I don't know how your night is going to end. I don't know who is going to die, but I know one thing, you are going to survive. Your grandfather and I have trained you to be the best you can. God is on your side. Damn, I hate Halloween."     "You and me both uncle, you and me both. After tonight, Halloween is something I will never want to do again. I got to go, but Uncle Jim, you better be at the river by sunrise, or you'll be the next to die." I threatened.     "You and your grandfather have and always will scare me. I will be there by sunrise. I promise, my little detective. Now, drink the damn water and continue. You have three hours until midnight. I know you won't be at the river by then, but I know you know what you are doing."      "Yeah, see you soon." I hung up and tossed the phone out of sight. Harry looked at me in confusion. "Throws them off. They will follow us by scent." I opened the thing of holy water. Just as my uncle said, there is enough water for two. I nodded solemnly.      "Holy water?" Harry questioned.      "Yes sir." I drank a mouthful and then sealed the bottle once more. I tossed it at Harry.     "Drink it." I ordered. I grabbed the Bible and began to recite a few verses in Latin. Harry drank the last of the water.         "Why does it taste sweet?" He asked.     "I don't know. Maybe because it is connected to Jesus. It's basically blessed by God himself." I answered.     "You are so weird." He laughed.     "Get used it, darling. You'll be dealing with me for a long time yet." I said.     "You seem so confident that we will make it out alive. Why?" He asked.     "If there's one thing I know, it's don't trust anyone who thinks you are sane."      "That makes sense." He muttered. I raised a brow. "The people who think themselves as sane are those idiots." I c****d my head at him. "Are you saying that we can't trust them."     "Watch how they act. Come and stand beside me. See how they are standing in a circle?" I asked. "They are talking about something intensely."         "Okay, but what does that mean?" He asked.         "It means that they are in on it. Susan and Jackson didn't know. That's why Susan sacrificed herself and Jackson was killed. Jackson was killed because he was protecting me. He wanted me safe." I informed him. "Got that gun on you?"      "How did you know?" He asked.         "Secrets, secrets, secrets." I said. "I may be fourteen, but I ain't stupid."     "I'm starting to see that." He grumbled. "What do you plan on doing, James?"     "I'm going to go to the river, after the ritual of course." Harry's eyes bulged out of his eyes.     "AFTER THE WHAT?" He shouted.      "There is no way we are going to make it out without meeting the cult. Don't worry, we'll survive. We got God on our side." I answered. "Now, are you ready for some fun?"     "What fun?" He asked.     "Everything is just getting started. That stuff that we faced, that was just level one stuff. You see, to the paranormal, we are playing a game where there are levels. We are about to enter level three." I told him.     "Level 3. What happened to level two?" Harry exclaimed.             "Level two was where Susan died. Act like you don't know that they know. We have to stick together. The only way to do that, is if you listen to me. Got it?"     "Fine, but only because you know what you doing? What do we do?" He asked.     "Continue to do what we were doing before." I said.     "That sounds lame." Harry said.     "Got any better ideas, darling." I asked.     "No." He replied.         "Thought so." I said.      We walked back over to the others, who chose to fall silent. "Give me the compass, Emit."     "No." He snapped. I glared at him. Harry snatched the compass and handed it to me. "We're heading the opposite direction. They've been leading us in the wrong direction this whole time!"     "What the hell man!" Harry shoved Emit. "I knew you were stupid, but not that stupid. You're on your own man. I can't believe I was friends with you."             "Harry." I said. He looked at me. "Level 3 has just begun." He looked at me confused and then his eyes widen. "Let's go."
