Chapter 17: A Cynical Swirl

768 Words
*Millie* We took off dust flying off our tires as we hit the tattered old road. We were side by side as we topped the hill and slid sideways into Satan's Tail, a multiple array of sharp turns within seconds of each other. While Lucas slowed down during the last of it, I sped up to take the lead. Next, came Cannibals' Canyon, a sharp drop after a narrow patched, blind corner. Most people that have died here have never been found. So the legend says that if you fall into the canyon during a full or new moon, the soulless cannibals of the dead come to feast upon the bodies to bring their souls an alive feeling again. Lucas drove tight against the outer edge of the canyon and whipped in front of me before the path narrowed once more. This is getting interesting, I thought, smirking. We reached towards the middle of the trail as the path narrowed even more when we S****de Swerve, a bike-tire width turned beside a three feet big hollow out in the cliff. Time the turn just right and you won't fall into the giant sinkhole below. We headed to my favorite part of the course, Fracture Falls, a beautiful 25-foot twisted waterfall that has amazing bike jumps most of the time and diving spots if you time the spring season. Two weeks out of the spring season is when it's the best time to dive, otherwise you'll break everything in your body. I looked to see the pink and white cross that reads 'Sarah' flew past me. Sarah Miller, a single mother of two and just recently beat cancer for the eighth time in 5 years, decided to go for a swim with friends. Believing she timed the five season right, jumping off of the 25-foot cliff and landing in the water, but she never came up by herself. I sped up beside Lucas, looked over at him and he did me before I looked back forward, seeing the jumping rocks nearing. I revved my engine to its full speed, taking the rocks head on. My bike and I flew through the air along with water that soaked me, but I didn't care, it was amazing. It felt like freedom had washed over me. I landed smoothly on the other side, taking the lead. I zoomed towards Hangman's Cliff, a cliff covered from one side to the other in tangled and knotted vines covered in thorns. I zoomed down the cliff when I felt a gush of wind pass from above me before seeing Lucas and his bike landing in front of me taking the lead. How did he-, How was it-,.... HE'S FOT TO SHOW ME THAT!!!, my thoughts screamed as I kept close to behind him just waiting for Jeckle's Drop. Jeckle's Drop is the scariest thing on the trail. It is a 100 foot drop into jagged rocks. To get through this part of the trail you either have to jump on to the cliffside beside it or hope when you fall something below is soft enough to break it. Lucas and I waved up as we neared the rock ramp, jumping at the same time as flying through the air side by side in slow motion. I looked at Lucas to see him looking at me smiling and I smiled back before yelling out in excitement. *Lucas* "Wwwwhhhhhoooooooo!", Millie yelled out as we reached halfway across the drop. I stared at her in awe. She was the most carefree and bada** girl I've ever met. She takes chances that other girls would whine about doing it. She doesn't like fakes or drama. She would rather hangout with guys and cause trouble than gossip or bully other people. She loves her family and treats her friends as family. She believes there's good in everyone. She has sugar and pepperica in a bottle on her 5'7 body. We landed on the other side without trouble. We stopped and stared at each other, smiling with excitement as our adrenals were still pumping strongly. Her smile shined bright and her hair glowed with the sun behind her. "That was awesome!", she heaved out. "Yeah. It was", I heaved back. She hopped off her bike and stretched as I did. Then I suddenly had the urge to ask a question that was bugging me. "Um, Millie? Have we met before high school?". The question stopped her in her tracks, unmoving for a while before turning towards me. "You really don't remember me, do you?", she said calmly. Have we met before?
