24A single carriage drew up outside, the pair of horse finding the shingle uncomfortable, and they pranced, lifting their hooves in discomfort as tiny stones stabbed into them. The driver reined them in, calling out soothing words and they soon became calm. He clambered down, went to the carriage door and opened it, dropping the folded step to allow the passenger to ascend. The man was large, wearing a morning suit with a white carnation in his lapel. Small, piggy eyes were in sharp contrast to his full, jovial face. He dusted himself down and surveyed the surroundings.
