Clifton Hendrix
Clifton
The loud sound of a car horn scared me out of my sleep. Jumping up, I look out the backseat windows then proceed to wipe the sleep out of my eyes.
“Well, well, well. Look who decided to join us!” My father laughs out loud.
“Give him a break, all the poking and probing they did to him today, he deserves a good napping.” My older sister, Evelyn, said from the passenger’s seat. She looked back at me with a weary smile before asking how’d I sleep.
“Fine, where are we going?” I ask looking at the both of them.
“Grandma Milly’s house.” My sister said before turning back to face the front. “She’s ready to talk to you about mother.” She rushed.
“Why all of a sudden?” I’ve been asking about Mother since I could talk, and they all told me to wait for Grandma Milly. She always refused to talk to me about my mother, her daughter.
“The doctors found Sapphire in your test results.” She said barely above a whisper.
“Your eyes are turning blue. Grandma Milly did her research after your mothers attack and has finally found an answer.” My father said nonchalantly.
“I’m 16 now. It took 16 years to find out why I’m like this?” My question came out harsher than I intended.
“Don’t get snappy boy! You weren’t always like this. Things developed over time.” My father gripped the steering wheel trying to keep his cool. I shook my head and sat back looking out the window. My sister gave me a reassuring look before we pulled up in front of Grandma Milly’s house. We ended up staying the whole weekend with me learning everything about my mothers’ untimely death. My sister being only three when she died never could tell me much about our mother. Apparently, her name was Yvonne, and she was an exceptional baker. One night closing her little bakery a group of masked men attempted to assault her. When she fought back, they stabbed her repeatedly with a sharp blade made out of Sapphire. My mother was rushed to the hospital after a bystander found her on the ground on the side of her shop.
My mother died during my induced labor, and so did I. Grandma Milly said I was pronounced dead that night and was heard crying by one of the morticians a few hours later during transport. Emergency surgery was performed on me to close my wounds that somehow reopened. After that night I spent the first two months of my life in the hospital. I developed faster than your average kid mentally and physically. When I was five years old, I was placed with the seven years old kids in day school because that is where I was mentally. If the doctors weren’t there for my birth, they would have questioned my age accuracy.
“Why didn’t it save Yvonne?” My father randomly asks Grandma Milly as we sit at the dinner table. Now I’m sixteen and developed this unforeseen strength that caused my class and anyone around to fear me and my father to rush me to the hospital, Never has there been any sign of abnormalities in my blood work until now. Sapphire, the blade that pierced through me and my mother is the blame for my abilities.
“I’m not sure if I’m correct, but all signs point to the heart.” She answered with a sigh. “Yvonne was stabbed repeatedly in her stomach and died from the excessive amount of blood she lost. Clifton was pierced in the heart. A big part of me believes she gave her life to save his.” She sent me a warm smile I assume hoping I wouldn’t feel bad about my mom sacrificing herself for me. I don’t feel bad, in fact, I will live my life to the fullest now since she valued it so much. She would want me to be happy after all. My father didn’t respond to her answer, instead he continued his meal in silence.

Years went on and my father has become a cold, heartless bastard. He found the men who killed my mother as soon as they were released from prison. As if serving twenty years wasn’t enough, he stabbed them all to death with old rusty rocks. My father has been running his wine business and keeping to himself except for when he needed me to get into someone’s head. Another ability I picked up when I turned eighteen. I didn’t need to use it unless my father requested it when he made impossible business deals. I would use it to look into the minds of women I was dating to see if they wanted me for my money or not, but never to take away their free will. I was cool with peeking; I had no desire to control anyone. I wanted my women to want to be with me on their own accord. They always did without me speaking a word to them, until I met Aurora.
My sister threw me the biggest party for my eighteenth birthday in the new drive-in theater field. We had a nice bonfire going and she played my favorite film. Before we all sat around the fire, my sister introduced me to her friend Catherine. She was a beautiful and seductive woman. I kissed her hand and flashed her my charming smile wooing her. Catherine and I connected rather quickly before the movie started. She showed a load of affection, even though I had a girlfriend. Soon the music came to an end, and everyone found comfortable spots to sit for the movie. I sat at the fire with my current girlfriend on one side of me and Catherine on the other. Catherine stood up waving her arms at someone across the field. The most beautiful woman I have ever laid my eyes on came into view. She smiled at Catherine and hugged her before they both sat down.
“Clifton, this is Aurora, my sister.” Catherine says with a quick introduction. I would have kissed her hand, but she gave me a quick wave with a sweet smile before giving my girlfriend a pleasant nod. During the movie, I watched her every move. Taking in every detail of her face like a work of art. Aurora didn’t pay me any attention and I wanted to know if she was doing that on purpose or not. Catherine squeezed my hand a few times wanting me to focus on her. Though Aurora probably wouldn’t notice what we were doing behind her, I didn’t want to risk ruining my chances. I faced my girlfriend and started whispering my apologies in her ear.
“Don’t worry Clifton, I’m okay with it as long as you respect me.” She said softly.
“What are you talking about?” I looked at her confused.
“I know you have a big appetite.” She whispered then kissed me on the cheek.
“Want some popcorn?” Aurora asks Catherine quickly before getting up to walk away.
“I’ll help you.” I said standing up a little too fast. Aurora looked at my girlfriend confused but was met with a warm smile.
“Why thank you.” She said sweetly before she started walking.
“You live around here?” I ask breaking the silence as we walk to the stand.
“Yes Sir, why do you ask?” She glanced at me.
“I’ve never seen you before.”
“Oh, well I’m not really social; I guess I’m easy to miss.” She stops in front of the stand and looks at me.
“Two cups of popcorn.” I ordered before looking down at her pretty brown eyes. “You’re beautiful, you’ll be hard to miss.” I say putting a strand of her hair behind her ear.
“Thank you.” She smiles awkwardly. “You only ordered two.” She points at the popcorn stand.
“I said I’ll help you, not we want popcorn.” I smile at her as she nods her head turning to face the stand.
“Can I get one more cup please, extra butter.” She orders while handing me the two cups. “Hold that, birthday boy.”
“Yes ma’am.” I smile taking the cups. We return to our seats, and she grabs one cup from my hand giving it to Catherine while keeping the buttery cup for herself. She then sits next to Catherine leaning back on a log. I handed the second cup to my confusing girlfriend then went to sit next to Aurora since I have a big appetite.
“What are you doing?” Aurora frowns at me. I didn’t know frowns could be adorable until I seen her do it.
“You have the buttery popcorn.” I answer getting comfortable between her and Catherine.
“You said you didn’t want any.”
“That was before you made yours sound so good.” I smiled popping a few in my mouth. “It’s my birthday, be nice.” She rolled her eyes and shared her popcorn with me. We laughed and watched the movie with light commentary. I felt a sense of warmth sitting with her, and I think she felt the same. “How old are you?” I ask in a hush tone.
“You never ask a lady her age.” She said before stuffing her face with more popcorn.
“A lady doesn’t stuff her face either.” I smirked causing her to throw a handful of popcorn at me.
“Hey! Aurora!” Catherine fussed from getting hit by a few strays. Aurora leaned over me to see her sister.
“I’m sorry.” She giggled while covering her buttery mouth with her hand. I got lost in her eyes as they sparkled when she smiled. A strong urge came over me as I lifted her chin up so she would look at me. My grip on her face made her lips poke out a little and her smile started to fade as she gasped at something. Ignoring her reaction, I leaned in and kissed her. Tasting the butter on her lips, I felt like time had stopped before she pulled away. She looked to be stunned. Her eyes cut to my girlfriend who was still watching the film.
‘How dare he kiss her? What is freaking wrong with him?’ Catherine looked at me then at Aurora. Her mouth didn’t move but she wore a repulsive look, and I heard what she said.
“Don’t do that again, I don’t care if it is your birthday.” Aurora grabbed my chin making me watch her as she scolds me. “Now go sit with your woman.” She orders in a hushed tone. I stand up and listen to her with no question. No woman has ever spoken to me like that.
‘If she’s going to be his second girlfriend I’d approve; she’s brave.’ I scanned my girlfriends face as she looks at Aurora.
“Second girlfriend?” I ask her.
“You heard that?” She looks at me kind of crazy.
“Heard what?” I ask her to see if she repeats it.
“Um, nothing. What were you saying?” She said in a slight panic.
‘He likes her, he was staring at her all night and now a kiss. He can’t just dump me, that’s not right. He didn’t even ask me if I was okay with him having another girlfriend.’ I stared at her in a daze, hearing all her thoughts.
“You’re okay with me having another girlfriend besides you?” I ask straight out.
“Yes, as long as I’m respected as your main girlfriend.” She says surely.
“What if she doesn’t want to share?” I scan her face again and hear her thoughts before she answers. “Then she can’t be my girlfriend.” I say out loud for her and she nods while looking at me wary. I sit back next to her and focus on Aurora trying to hear her thoughts, but I got nothing. Turning my attention to Catherine I hear her cursing to herself about me kissing Aurora. Her screaming was loud even in my head, did she like me that much? I didn’t mean to hurt her; I couldn’t control myself when I kissed Aurora. I reached over and secretly rubbed her hand to calm her down and it actually worked. It’s as if she heard me telling her to relax and she did. I looked at Aurora and tried again, still not hearing or feeling anything. I looked at my girlfriend and tried to tell her to lay on my shoulder and relax just to test it out. Surprisingly she did just that and even fell asleep after a while. After the movie, the music continued, and everyone danced and hung around talking. Aurora ignored me for about an hour still mad that I kissed her. She left the party and I looked for her for two weeks straight until I saw her again. I never could read her mind and that only fascinated me more. Part of me feels like she had something to do with that ability since I acquired it directly after our kiss.

“Aurora knows.” I tell my father as I sit on the couch in his office. I chased Aurora for years before she decided to finally be my girlfriend six months ago.
“She knows what? That you’re not a virgin?” He scuffs looking at some papers on his desk.
“About the Sapphire and my abilities.” I look at him annoyed by his attitude.
“Of course, she knows, she’s your soulmate like your mother was mine.” He looks at me carelessly.
“Soulmate or not, how could she possibly know stuff I don’t know?” My question annoyed him as he exhaled.
“Angels told her Clifton. Aurora is an earth witch like her mother, like your mother. She knows about all the gems, crystals, and stones. She prays twice a day if not more. Aurora is too innocent for the likes of you, so I wonder why she was made for you.” My father growled. “Your soulmate deserves the best Clifton. She will kill for you and give her life for your kids.” I could hear the hurt that he’s been burying.
“I haven’t gotten a new ability since my eighteenth birthday. Do you think-?”
“Yes!” He cut me off looking exhausted. “Yes, Aurora is the reason you got that amazing gift that has blessed us tremendously. I’m pretty sure she can take it away if you hurt her, so don’t.” he explained sternly.
“She wasn’t my girlfriend when she gave it to me.”
“She was your soulmate, and she didn’t give it to you, she activated it. You’re destined to be with Aurora, she is your wife.”
“And if I don’t marry her?” I ask wanting to hear the outcome of my actions.
“There are second chance mates. She could possibly have one and leave you in the dust. That might result in you lousing your abilities; all of them.” He looked unfazed and judgmental.
“I’m not going to hurt her.” I say with confidence.
“Did you sleep with her?”
“Yes Sir.” I look at him uncomfortably.
“Were you her first?”
“Yes, why?” He looks at me with a blank expression.
“Does she still believe she was your first?” My face drops at his words. “You’ve already hurt her.” He went back to his paperwork as if what he said was nothing.
“I proposed to her.” I say, not knowing what else to do. I feel a strong calling from her to be with her.
“Did you dispose of your dames?” He said without looking at me.
“None of them would expose our relationship.” I say surely.
“What about the conspicuous jane?” He asks referring to Cat.
“I haven’t slept with her sister in three months.” I say unsure.
“You stopped sleeping with her before or after you deflowered Aurora?” He finally looks at me.
“After. After Aurora, I haven’t had the urge to lay with anyone else.” I say leaning back on the couch.
“Then why do you keep them around?” he looked at me over his glasses.
“I have something special with each one of them.” I answer honestly.
“You slept with Aurora and didn’t develop any new abilities?” He looks at me over his glasses.
“That’s what I said.” I sat back in my seat.
“You did something wrong. Did you deflower her before you proposed?” He cut his stoic eyes at me.
“After we signed the papers making her Mrs. Clifton Hendrix.” I assure him.
“You already married her without a wedding? And she is fine with that?” He looks at me bewildered.
“No, she is planning her dream wedding as we speak.” I sit up getting uncomfortable.
“Married for three months, no wedding yet and you were unfaithful.” He stands up from his seat. “We need to go see Milly; you have really messed up boy. You can’t mess up fate, it could change for the worse.” He scolds me.
“Everything has been great for me and Aurora.” I say trying to calm him down.
“You, Aurora, and a number of other women.” He is frowning so fiercely it’s giving me a headache.
“I’m allowed multiple wives.” I shrug.
“No! No, you cannot! Leave that woman or commit to her before the wedding.” He says coldly. I’m in love with Aurora this shouldn’t be hard to do. But I love all of my beautiful girlfriends for one reason or another. Could I really just drop them like they’re nothing to me.
“I understand Sir.” I say to him before getting up to leave. I had to go meet with the workers who built Aurora’s dream house for us to move into. I gave her a call from my father’s rotary phone hoping she could meet me there. Aurora gave me chills when I spoke to her and though I had the urge to drop what I was doing and run to her, I had to resist it. We viewed our house and got the okay to move in tomorrow. While Aurora gathered her stuff from her mother’s house, I went to visit Beatrice. I wanted nothing more than to undress Aurora but there was a nagging feeling I had in my stomach. I had to treat all my women equally at least until our commitment ceremony.
Beatrice made it her job to do everything I liked. Surprisingly it took a little over an hour before I became aroused by her. When we started having intercourse, I became uninterested. I closed my eyes and imagined Aurora which gave my manhood a kick. I reached my full-length picturing Aurora and almost forgot I was with Beatrice.
“Ouch!” She leaped away from me with wild eyes looking at my manhood. I heard her thoughts and gave her a reassuring talk before we tried again. Though Beatrice was very satisfied in the end, I was not. I didn’t feel any form of pleasure being with her and I only stayed hard thinking of my wife. I went home that night highly disappointed. Beatrice is a beautiful woman and an amazing cook; I’m going to miss her if I have to leave her. If she can’t satisfy me physically when my wife is busy, I won’t risk her being a reason Aurora’s feelings get hurt. I will talk to Aurora before the wedding about me having multiple wives. I can’t solely trust my Fathers words; this is my life with Aurora.
