CHAPTER 2

PROCEEDING WITH THE WEDDING After drinking herself to a stupor, Mina spent the night at the bar and only returned home when all her family members were calling her countlessly. When the calls were getting too much, Mina turned off her phone and went to a children's park to clear her head. It was obvious that everyone was calling her because it was her wedding day and the wedding was supposed to begin in a few hours. Mina couldn't think straight as her head went blank. She was trying so hard to find a way to call off the wedding, but what would she tell her grandfather who already had all his friends invited? Her mother had bragged to all her friends that her younger daughter would be getting married to the most handsome bachelor in New York. Would it be nice to make them feel embarrassed by calling off the wedding? Mina sighed heavily when she couldn't think of any way. She decided to return home and proceed with the wedding for the sake of her grandfather who loved her dearly, more than her parents. Her parents loved Rosa more because she is the eldest daughter . They showered her with all their love and care leaving Mina behind like she isn't their daughter also, but her grandfather, Papa John loved Mina, giving her the love and care her parents failed to give to her. Mina exhaled for the tenth time before leaving the park. She boarded a cab and got home in less than ten minutes. As expected, all the family members were so worried that they all gathered in the sitting room, pacing to and fro with their phones in their hands. They've been calling Mina non-stop, but she switched off her phone which got them extremely worried. Her parents weren't worried because their daughter went missing, they were worried because she might ruin their plans of getting her married to Jace. Mina opened the entrance door and all eyes turned to her. Her grandfather was the first to rush to her, pulling her into a warm hug. “ Where have you been, Mina? We were so worried about you” Papa John said as he broke the hug. “ I am fine, Grandpa, I just went to clear my head” Mina said as her eyes fell on Jace who stood beside her elder sister Rosa. Rosa had a smirk on her face as she glared daggers at Mina who just looked away. “ You b***h! Where have you been?” Mina’s mom, Rita, shouted as she moved closer to her and gave her a resounding slap across her face. “ Do you know how worried we were? We kept calling you, but you switched off your phone when you know that today is your wedding day. Do you want to disgrace us?” Rita shouted, while Mina said nothing. Her eyes filled with tears as she fought so hard not to tear up in front of everyone. “ You don't care about me, all you care about is the wedding. Do you know what happened to me? Every so often, I ask myself if you're really my mother” Mina shouted as the tears she fought so hard to hold back, fell freely from her eyes. “ What!” Rita exclaimed angrily. “ Yes, I hate you all!” Mina said and pushed her mother out of the way as she stormed upstairs to her room. “ Mina dear! Mina!” Papa John ran after Mina upstairs, while Rosa scoffed where she stood with her fists folded. “ Why is everyone hell-bent on getting her married to Jace? He is mine and I am already pregnant with his child” Rosa gritted her teeth as she rubbed her stomach tenderly. *********** After the talk with Papa John her grandfather, Mina decided to go on with the wedding even though she wasn't happy, she just had to do it for the sake of her grandfather who showered her with his love and care. Mina was seated on the dressing table in front of a big mirror as a makeup artist was dressing her face with the finest makeup which soothed her white porcelain skin. If she hadn't seen what happened between Rosa and Jace the previous night, she would still have that bright smile on with the anticipation of getting married, but now, that bright smile has turned gloomy and just thinking about it brought tears to her eyes. “ Ma'am, I know you're excited about your wedding, but can you hold back your tears so it won't ruin the makeup” The makeup artist said tenderly, making Mina fight the tears back and sniffle in her watery nose? Most people would think she is crying as a result of excess joy and happiness, but what they didn't know was that she was crying because her life would be ruined once she gets married to Jace. After the makeup and dressing, the makeup artist left Mina alone in the dressing room. Mina kept staring at her face blankly without any emotions. If it was on a normal day, she wouldn't stop taking photos of her beautiful face and post it on her i********: page, but now she has lost interest in doing any of that because she isn't happy about the wedding. “ See who we have here, the latest bride in town” Rosa stepped into the dressing room as she taunted Mina who kept quiet without saying a word. “ I just can't wait for you to get married to Jace and be his housemaid while I become his official wife since I am carrying his child” Rosa tugged in mockery. Hearing the word ‘carrying his child's Mina’s heart shattered into millions of pieces and her pupils shrank in dread and hurt. “ Why are you telling me all this? Isn't this what you and Jace want?” Mina composed herself. “ I am just telling you all this so you would know your place. Once Grandfather hands over his company to Jace, we will both travel to Hawaii for the holidays while you will remain in his house as his slave” Rosa took slow steps towards Mina and whispered into her ears. “ Dear sister, Jace is mine and there is nothing you or anyone can do about it” Rosa smiled creepily after whispering those words into Mina’s ear. Rosa stepped back and gave Mina a short smile. “ See you at the wedding hall dear sister” Rosa waved and walked out of the dressing room. Mina folded her fists tightly so that it turned white out of anger. “ I won't give you the satisfaction you seek for Rosa,” Mina bit her lips, almost drawing out blood.
