Chapter 1
“So this is the end of the road for you?” I gulp down another drink as Meralun glares daggers at me.
I ignored her, it wasn’t my fault she was doomed so soon.
“Doomed so soon?” I say my thoughts out loud. “And too a mere beta..”
“Who works in finance!” Aurora chirps in and we all laugh out loud at the table.
Meralun remained silent, but it was obvious how angry she was. I could feel her emotions circling the whole place.
If she wasn’t just a beta she would have stenched this place with her overwhelming pheromones.
I had remembered when she called me just this afternoon, crying hysterically that she had been mated.
My first thought was disgusting, ridiculous.
Kilos my wolf found it more repulsive than I did.
But what made it worse was the fact that she was okay with it.
Okay with being tamed?! Kilos had laughed at her silly little statement.
If she was okay with it why’d she have to call me crying like she had lost her position as one of the top ten women in Italy.
“It’s not as bad as you think it is.” She tries to convince us.
“It’s an amazing feeling. The staring, the tingling up your spine, the sensation in your lower belly, everything…”
“So you’re okay with being mated to a beta?”
Dixxy’s face was coated in disgust and disappointment.
“He’s a nice guy!” Meralun seethes.
“Nice is nothing next to power.” I speak finally.
Dixxy and Aurora both nod in support.
It always baffled me how high and mighty women who changed the world and moved mountains always got tamed by useless, good for nothing, low life men.
I mean ‘finance’?!
Meralun owned businesses down in Singapore.
She controlled places in New York too.
And most impressively she had just been awarded CEO of the month in our last ….. meeting.
And now, she wants to throw it all away for a man?!
Men who are by textbook definition; major disappointments.
Kilos scoffed. Disgusting.
“If he’s so nice, why did you call all of us this afternoon crying your eyes out?” Dixxy asks Meralun between sips of her drink.
Meralun is quiet for a bit, her eyes looking at everything and everyone else except me.
I dropped my legs I had stretched out on the table to the floor.
She shifts uncomfortably in her seat.
“Meralun….” Kilos warned.
She goes stiff the moment Kilos’ voice calls out in warning.
“He proposed to me…” her voice was barely above a whisper but we heard her loud and clear due to our sharp hearing.
“And?…” Aurora urged.
“I said yes–”
“f*****g hell, Meralun.” The rest of us groaned in disappointment.
There goes another queen.
“Were you always this emotional?” My head tilts slightly.
Out of all the news I heard today this has to be the most ridiculous, even more ridiculous than finding out the president wants an audience with me.
“Finding a mate is more beautiful than you think…” she leans forward with her hand to her heart.
I roll my eyes, already feeling myself about to gag.
Kilos was done, she wanted no part of this anymore.
“The most beautiful to women in our caliber is power, success and wealth. And if anything is to follow, it’s good f*****g sex.” I say leaning back to my chair and crossing my legs.
“Being mated is a bondage I never want to be in, being mated is a curse, a disease. It’s repulsive.”
Meralun rolls her eyes.
“Here she goes again condemning the one thing she can’t escape.” She scoffs.
“I’ve been in deeper waters than you could ever imagine. I’ve been hunted, shot, beaten half to death, lost assets, territories, I’ve lost people dearest to me. If there’s any deep pit both in Italy and Lunaris, I’ve been in them all and I escaped everything.” My voice drops lower, “so what’s a mate that I can’t reject?”
Everyone’s silent.
They can feel it now, my anger, my disgust, my disappointment.
It feels the space between us and spreads wide.
If we weren’t the only werewolves here then the whole club would have gone silent.
They all bow their heads, a way of submission to an Alpha.
This is what it’s supposed to feel like. This was what I worked day and night for. Power and wealth.
This was what made the world go round.
Not some stupid myth they tell children to have them hoping for a future or dream they’ll never have.
A mate. Even the word alone repulses me.
The feeling of the veins throbbing in my neck signals to me that my anger is getting out of hand.
Meralun sits up now with her arms out and her palms forward. She’s trying to be defensive.
“If you think I won’t f*****g break your neck because you’re part of my sisterhood then you’re joking.” I stand from my seat towering over every single person in the vvip lounge.
“I am your Alpha, both in and out of Lunaris, and you speak to me with nothing but the deepest form of respect.” I growl.
I take slow intimidating steps toward her.
I watch as she tries to make herself smaller and it fills my ego up.
“Don’t ever try to disrespect me again, do you understand?”
She nods, swallowing constantly.
I see the sweat dripping from the sides of her face.
“And if you want to reduce yourself to nothing because you’ve found a mate, then be f*****g guest. But don’t expect me to pick up your calls when your life starts going down the drain.”
I turn to leave as Dixxy and Aurora pick up my bag and theirs.
The bass of the music is still pounding as I storm toward the exit.
Conversations die as I pass, people know better than to stand in my way.
That’s when someone bumps into me.
Actually bumps.
And it wasn’t a drunk brush, it was a full collision.
If I didn’t have great stamina this fool would have tossed me to the ground.
“You imbecile–” I start, already furious, then I stop.
His brown eyes stare into mine with so much raw intensity and emotion that it made me slightly open my lips but close it.
Something irritating pings in my chest.
It’s new, and I hate it.
He opens his mouth to speak but I don’t let him.
I straighten my jacket, step around him and keep walking.
Whatever rubbish that was, I decided, it’s not my problem.
I’ve had enough of men ruining my night.
