*Several months later*
"We really can't hire you for this role, Miss Wallace. We have our criteria, and you honestly don't meet them. We also don't have a lesser job."
"Sir please, I really need this job. I might be pregnant, but I have what it takes to do this waitress job."
"Hmm, I really can't say, I just don't feel comfortable allowing you to run around with this pregnancy honestly. What of your husband is he in support of this?" The manager asked, looking from me to my almost invisible stomach.
"I'm a single mother and, honestly, I would have lied about this pregnancy, but I'm telling you the truth because I really need this job."
He looked at me for some minutes and took out a paper, placing it in front of me.
"When will you be available to start?"
"As soon as possible sir," I answered, because it'll definitely end positively.
"Okay, just sign here and here." He said while indicating the places I'd put my signature on the paper." Miss Wallace, you're hired. Welcome to Secrets."
"Thank you very much." I said, taking his hands in a handshake.
This was a good way to start the week marking the end of my job-hunting days.
I had exhausted the money I had gotten from Eric after spending on hospital appointments, getting what to eat and getting a little space to stay.
As much as I liked this new life, I was always lonely. I missed my best friend. She had long blocked me, I couldn't see my family either. The few times my father had asked to see me, he had insisted I stay at home to serve his wife, she had left me in a condition not suitable for a pregnant woman. With the help of some of the people my mother had been good to, I was able to leave their house for good.
Now I needed to find a stable income because of my children. I had gone for a scan and the doctor had said I was expecting twins – Double Blessings, as I called them.
I went inside the changing room for workers as the manager had directed. There was a girl in there. I greeted her and went to locate my locker, the one he said would be assigned to me as he had called someone on the phone.
"Are you the new girl?" The red-haired girl sitting on one of the chairs asked.
"Yeah, I'm Lucy." I said, smiling at her.
"I'm Annette. What department are you?"
"I'm just a waitress," I said shyly.
"Oh good, that's my department too, and I was already getting bored with the people here. Are you going to serve now? You should change into your uniform now." She said, pointing at the locker beside her. It was the only one without a name, so it was clearly mine." Don't worry, by tomorrow you'll get a tag, we all had to wait a day. " She said, patting my shoulder.
"Thank you." At least I had someone to talk to if I had questions. She looked nice and sounded friendly.

"Order for table 12." The chef said, tapping the bell, it was to notify me to start serving to table 12.
I had already worked for a week here, and I was enjoying it. For starters, I got free food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, I had days I could go off and still receive some money to take care of myself, plus there was an available room if I ever decided to work overtime.
As I carried the tray to table 12, it was filled with university students all with their phones. I wondered why the world seemed so busy with phones.
"Your orders please." I said, laying down the boxes of hamburgers, chips and chicken wings.
"Thank you. You kind of look familiar. Have we met before?" One of the girls asked.
"I'm not sure." Her face didn't look familiar.
"Oh sorry, you might look like someone I must have had a one-time meeting with because the face looks familiar, but I can't remember where we met." She turned to her friend who had her eyes glued to her phone "don't you think so?" She asked her friend.
The friend adjusted her glasses to look at me closer. "Oh snap! She's the girl that f****d Eric Morgan some months ago and got pregnant for him. The girl who slept with her best friend's father." She said, hitting the table, gaining the attention of her other friends and the rest of the customers.
My breathing stopped, I could hear my heart beating loudly, my vision became blurry.
Rosie, the friend I met at the cafe, might have seen my discomfort. She approached the table to find out what was wrong.
"Y'all didn't say you now employ people that sleep with people's fathers and try to trap them with pregnancy here." The girl with glasses replied Rosie.
Her friend who started the initial conversation pointed at me. That was when it registered with Rosie, she turned back to the girls, packed their food into the tray I dropped on the table and gave me to hold.
"Well, since you guys already have the energy to start analyzing people's lives, I'll take it that you don't want to eat, and we're not ready to serve you. You can leave now." She said, clicking her fingers for them to hurry up and leave.
"Is this how you treat customers?" The one with glasses asked. "Y'all are hiring someone who can ruin your business." She added looking at me.
"You guys should f*****g leave." Rosie kept insisting.
"Fine, I love how y'all are ready to lose everything for her. Wait till I report this restaurant." She said, hitting her chest. That was when it dawned on me. She remembered me from the start. The whole "your face looks familiar" was just pretense.
This wasn't happening again just when I thought my life was finally getting better, and I found a reason to live, someone comes to plunge me deeper into the pit I fought hard to come from.
"Lucy, are you okay? You look like you've seen a ghost." She asked, holding my arm.
The girl with glasses stood on one of the chairs hitting her glass with a spoon "Y'all listen up, we have someone here who got pregnant for her friend's father because of –"
My breath hitched, the last word I heard was
*Harry carry her*
Everything went blank.
