Chapter1:The return
The October breeze sent a chill through Alex Caldwell as he stood on the edge of the driveway in front of his childhood home in Coldridge. He had seen better days. The house windows became dark and lifeless as soon as the vibrant white paint began to flake like aged skin and pores. Six years ago, he left this place and his father. He had vowed never to go back. But everything had changed because of a letter. "We want to speak. There's something you want to understand. Come home." The letter became unsigned; however, Alex didn’t want to bet who dispatched it. It could most effectively be his father, Richard Caldwell, the man who had pushed him away after the surprising demise of his mother six years ago. His father, a person who had always saved secrets, a man whose coldness had driven humans away, had summoned Alex lower back. Alex feels uneasily because of the feeling of the load of the past on him. Every step toward the house brought memories flooding down the lower back—of his mom’s smile. The police called it an accident, but Alex had in no way believed it. And neither, he suspected, had his father. Yet Richard had refused to speak about it, shutting Alex out and locking him in his very own grief. Ultimately, Alex had left, fleeing to the town, vowing in no way to return. But now, here he was. The house loomed before him, dark and silent. Alex hesitated at the door, his palms brushing towards the weathered timber. Should he knock? Might his father even have a solution? The query became moot. He reached for the doorknob, and it grew to become easily in his hand. The door opens with an extended, mournful sound, like a residence exhaling after years of silence. "Dad?” Alex called out, going into the house. His voice echoed within the stillness. No response. He took another step, his boots scraping towards the hard wooden ground, dirt growing in the air. The entirety appeared the same—the vintage grandfather clock nevertheless ticked inside the corner, the framed photographs lining the walls, but their glass filled with a lot of filth. Alex's eyes lingered on a picture of his mom, her heated eyes frozen in time, a smile that was not regarded as real. Something turned out wrong. The residence felt... too quiet. His father needs to have been here, waiting. However, there has been no sign of him. Alex moved in the direction of the stairs, his heart racing in his chest. The second one changed into where his father’s observer lay—an area Alex hadn’t set foot in on the night his mom died. The door was barely open, a dim light flickering from inside. Alex’s hand hovered over the handle. He drove it open. His father sat at the large, all-right table, slumped forward, his head resting awkwardly on the table. “Dad?” His voice became slightly a whisper. Richard Caldwell didn’t respond. Alex rushed forward, dread pooling in his gut. His father’s face faded, eyes half-closed. A thin line of blood trickled from his head, soaking into the papers scattered across the table. A g*n lay loosely in his father’s left hand, an envelope clutched inside the other. “No, no, no." Alex spurred away, his thoughts racing, heart hammering. His father became lifeless. The person who had referred to him again—dead before they could talk. It couldn’t be a coincidence. It couldn’t simply be suicide. Now not with the letter. No longer after what happened to his mom. Trembling, Alex reached for the envelope. His call changed into scrawled across it in his father’s familiar handwriting. He opened it with shaking palms, pulling out a single sheet of paper. *Alex, In case you’re analyzing this, I’m long gone. I wish I could let you know everything face-to-face; however, I no longer have that luxury. There are matters I’ve stored hidden from you—secrets that go lower back to your mom’s death, or even similarly, secrets and techniques that have haunted this family for generations. You have to leave Coldridge. Now. They’ll come for you, just as they came for your mom and me. You can’t believe absolutely everyone, no longer even the police. They recognize extra than they let on. Don’t try to locate the truth—it will only damage you. There’s a person waiting for you at the address underneath. Visit them. They’ll provide an explanation for everything. Burn this letter after learning it. You’re no longer secure. -Richard* Alex's heartbeat raced in his ears. His father had warned him not to find the truth, but he couldn't. He crumpled the letter in his fist in anger and confusion in the bubbling inside of him. What had his father been hiding? What had really happened to his mother? He didn't have answers. But he was sure about one thing: he is not going to leave Coldridge until he finds out the truth.
