Chapter 1
Faith POVLocking the bakery door, I walk quickly across the street to my car. Immediately turning on the heat of the car I run my hands to warm them up.
Despite only staring outside for 3 minutes max. The height of winter was here and it didn’t help that freezing rain has been falling all day.
Today has been a terrible day. I had a nagging feeling that today wasn’t going to go well the moment I woke up. Turns out my gut feeling was right when the appliances I ordered for the bakery weren’t delivering.
Sighing I thought to myself that’s more time added until you can open your bakery. You’ll be out of your savings before you can even start.
When I finally was warm enough, I turned on the headlights and put the car in drive.
The entire time I was on the road. Cars were constantly honking behind me. Some swearing. Ignoring them I continue at my pace knowing that it’s better to stay slightly slower than the speed limit when there could be black ice everywhere.
Turning into exit 14, I hit the brakes slightly on the turn. What I didn’t expect was to hit a patch of black ice.
Frantically trying to gain control of the car, my heart erratically bearing in my chest. I turned the wheel in the opposite direction I was skidding but it was too late.
The last thing I remember is the sound of glass breaking as my head slammed into the drive side window.
Reece POVWaving goodbye to my parents, I walk to the back door buckling in Aiden and checking his seatbelt.
It was already 11 at night and he was deep asleep.
Starting the engine, I carefully got out of the parking lot before making my way home.
Finally making it to the exit I turn on my blinker and turn into it.
Surprised when my headlights shine on car that crashed into the trees that surround this area, I quickly slam my brakes and park towards the side.
Turning around I check to make sure Aiden is alright. Breathing a sigh of relief when he’s still asleep and fine.
I then pull out my phone to call 911.
Almost immediately I hear “this is 911, what is your emergency”
Quickly responding I say that there has been a car crash.
“Does it look like there is a person in the car?”
“I’m not sure, I’m parked right behind it and I can’t leave my son in the car by himself to go check”.
“Okay sir, the police and ambulance are on their way. Can you tell me when you hear them?”
After a couple of minutes I say “I hear them in the distance”
“Okay, I’m going to stay on the line until they arrive at where you are”.
When they finally did, we ended the call.
Running towards the car, the officers shout “there’s someone in here”.
From inside my car I watch as they pull a female out of the car carefully and immediately put braces around her.
Shocked, I couldn’t help but think how long has she been out there. No heat and severely injured.
Bringing me out of my thoughts was a loud knock on my car window.
Quickly getting out of the car and closing the door I ask “is there anything you need?”
“We just need to right a report of what you saw when you got here and then your free to go”.
Telling the officer that what he saw when he arrived was what I saw too explaining that I couldn’t step that far away from my car with my son in it.
Nodding he writes down what I say and telling me that I’m all set.
“Do you know where they are bringing the girl?” I ask.
“Hope Memorial Hospital”.
Shouting a thanks I get back into my car and continue the drive home making a mental note to check in on the girl before I headed to work.
