Guard Encounter
The night the babies were born, Jae-sun and Ji-su slept in the receiving office. The next evening, they stayed in Block One. The guards had found and destroyed his calendar, so he couldn’t determine their exact birthdate, but the day started with a partial eclipse; with such a reference, he could figure the date out later. They were prepared for this day. Jae-sun made several diapers from the older dish clothes, and fashioned safety pins with the stiff wire from the rice bags.
Ji-su fashioned tiny clothes and sewed them together with long synthetic fibers from the rice sacks and a curved poultry needle from the kitchen.
