Chapter 4

1783 Words
Maverick’s POV: My dad and I were in an empty hospital room. I sat down on the edge of the gurney, while my father leaned up against the wall. He was never one to sit in a serious conversation. “So Addy is your mate?” he said, a smile plastered on his face. “Seems so. She’s not even eighteen yet. How did I not know she was my mate sooner?” I pondered, out loud. “Maybe because when you were sixteen you were already learning more about the pack than I was at that age and juggling school. Then, when you graduated, you went to camp to learn more for your Alpha roll and that took two years to complete. Then you tried college, which took a year and a half, because you wanted to give it a try. You came back and Addy and Kyle were all grown up and you then spent your time training the younglings and taking over the pack as Alpha with Kyle by your side. Addy was never really around you for you to notice and you know she’s not well liked by the pack members for being human,” he explained. I nodded, knowing that all the facts he said were true. I was always too busy with my duties to even notice that my wolf felt our mate was in our own territory. “I want to contact her parents, but I need to know what happened. Her parents are out for the night, and Kyle was supposed to drop her off with us thirty minutes ago. She is never late arriving to our house.” “Titan was restless and wanted me to walk around. I needed to get away from the training field after I scared the younglings with my aura slipping out. I then caught her scent, lavender and honey, so I followed. I ended up in the secluded part of the forest where the teenage lovers go for privacy. Only when I got closer, did I notice Adeline beating up Jaxon, Makalia, and Joseph. Joseph was passed out on the ground. Makalia was trying to force a shift, but her wolf refused, and she told Jaxon to finish her off..” I growled. “I was so focused on Adeline’s amazing combat techniques, when I smelt wolfbane and lost control of Titan who let out a fierce growl. Jaxon threw Adeline into the closest tree where she fell unconscious. I linked Titus and he and three others locked the three fools in the cells, while I ran here,” I explained all that happened. “CRAP! Kyle is still training the younglings on the field. He’s not gonna be happy about what happened.” ‘Kyle,’ I linked. ‘What’s up, Alpha?’ he responded, out of breath. ‘I need you to come to the hospital, something has happened,’ I replied, in a serious tone. ‘On my way. What happened?’ he asked. ‘Umm… it’s your sister…’ I answered, cutting the link and blocking him. I could feel him trying to cut through my link, but I was not going to tell him what happened through the link. “You might want to call the Talbot’s. Her brother is on her way and I’m going to break the news. Wish me luck! He’s not gonna be civil about someone attacking his sister. I might need a light sedation of wolfsbane on standby,” I told my father, hoping I did not need to use the vile substance. Maximus nodded, his face contorted through a mix of emotions at the mention of wolfsbane. I opened the door, exiting the room with my father following behind me. The staff bowed, but I did not acknowledge them. I needed to know what was going on with my mate. I need to know she’s okay. “I am going to see how Addy is doing before I call her parents,” Dad whispered to me. Before I could respond, Kyle burst through the door, tears running down his face and a murderous look on his face. He looked around the hospital lobby, his aura seeping out of him in waves. Everyone around him flinched away, even the young children who were sitting with their mothers. I stepped into his view. He stomped over to me, stopping right in front of me. “Where’s my sister? What happened to her? She said to go… I let her go by herself. What happened to my baby sister?” he asked in one breath, with his head hung low. I put my hand on his shoulder. He looked up at me, his eyes glossy, but his shoulder slumped low in defeat. I felt sorry for my friend. We are the same age and grew up together. His little sister was hurt and vulnerable since she is human. She is definitely a fighter though. “The doctor is looking at her. Let’s go in here and I will explain what happened,” I told him, motioning towards the room my father and I came out of. I closed the door. “Sit,” I ordered. He sat down in the chair with a heavy sigh. I then explained everything that happened, who was involved down to the part where I am his sister's mate. I stood there, watching his every move, waiting for him to say something as his fists slowly clenched open and close as he was trying to calm his seething anger down. His jaw finally relaxed, letting me know he was finally calm. It was a good minute of dead silence that filled the air of the room. “Your mates?” he said, breaking the silence, looking up at me. I nodded weerily. I was over the moon that she was my mate. I could finally protect her as no one was willing either. I was willing to kill anyone who would touch my mate. Titan fully agrees to the idea of murdering the entire pack if it meant keeping his precious beauty safe. “Congrats, I know you will protect my sister with your life. I do, however, want in on the punishment for the three fools in the dungeons. They will pay for every broken bone and bruise on her body,” he growled. “Agreed,” I affirmed, sickened that my own pack would go as far as trying to kill my Beta’s sisters just for being human. There was a soft knock on the door, before it opened and my mom’s head peaked in. She stepped all the way into the room, a soft smile on her face. “How’s Addy?” Kyle asked, the tone in his voice filled with anger and fear for his sister. “She will be okay. She has a mild concussion, some broken ribs, and a sprained wrist. She will be in the hospital for a couple of days. Maximus is calling Katreena and Axel. Kyle, would you like to go see her first, before my son steals her from everyone,” she light-heartedly chuckled. “Yes, Aunt Lily,” he chuckled, standing to his feet to follow my mother. He never liked calling my mother just Lily, and always ended up being ‘Aunt Lily’. I did not mind, I mean she was Adeline’s godmother and basically we were a close family, so I did not really question his reasoning behind it. “Before we leave this room, neither of you are going to tell her she is mated. She must find out on her own. She will find out in less than a week anyway. Let her find out for herself,” Lily stated, pointing her finger in both Kyle’s and my faces and giving us the ‘don’t you test your limits’ look. We both simultaneously put both our hands up, nodding our heads frantically in agreement. She gave us a curt nod, as she turned to the door, opening it all the way and motioning for us to follow. We followed closely behind my mother. “Go ahead, Kyle,” Lily said, pointing to a room, where the door was already open and a single bed was sitting in the middle of the room. There were machines on both sides of the bed and a frail looking Adeline lying on the bed, lying there like she was peacefully sleeping, almost like the princess sleeping beauty. I stood next to the door of the room, my mother standing next to me, holding my hand like I was a five-year-old child getting ready to go say goodbye to my dying relative. Kyle walked in, shutting the door behind him. I felt my brother's pain. The pain he felt for his sister is how I felt for my mate. A common love. I already loved her; her entire body and soul. Our mating bond was strong, the pull to have her close and to hold her close in my arms to protect her was a burning desire. Maximus came walking down the hall, his sadness evident in his face. His goddaughter was hurt badly and she is in the hospital. Emotions are running high with everyone right now. “Called Katreena and Axel, they are on their way back to the territory. Should be here any minute, I told them what happened to her and the exciting news of you being her mate,” he explained, his tone of voice all serious. The door opened and Kyle slowly walked out, his shoulders slumped and he was hiding his face. I could see the fresh shed tears on his shirt. Lily let go of me and moved to pull Kyle into a much needed embrace. As my mother was comforting him, I snuck into the room. I left the door open, not really caring if anyone heard what I said or saw what I was doing with my mate. I could not do much as she was injured and unconscious. I pulled a chair to the edge of the bed and sat down. I caressed her small hand in my large palm. Instant tingles erupted throughout my entire body. It felt like an electrical current. I leaned in, letting Titan enjoy the feeling of being so close to our mate. I planted a light, long kiss on the back of her hand. The sparks exploded through my entire body and Titan was jumping with glee. I laid my head down, still holding her hand as I rested my head down on the edge of the bed. I closed my eyes for a second only to fall into a deep, peaceful slumber.
