Chapter 6

Maverick's POV: I was sleeping peacefully, when something kept trying to move me away. I stirred, sitting up, startled to see Adeline was waking. "Alpha," Adeline mumbled, softly. “No need for all the bowing Addy,” I told her with a smile. A yawn escaped my mouth. I should inform my parents and her brother that she's awake. 'Mom, dad Addy's awake.' I mind linked, my parents. 'That's great news, son,' Maximus replied. 'We will be there in a few minutes. We are meeting Katreena and Axel out front,' Lily added. I was interrupted by Adeline clearing her throat. “What happened?” she asked. “Where are my parents and my brother?” “Well, your brother was almost late for training and you were on your way to my parents' house, when you were attacked by Joseph Peter, Makalia Thorton, and Jaxon Blackwell,” I explained, pausing to read her reaction. She stared back at me for a long minute, without a word being said. The room was quiet. I was not sure if I should continue talking or give her a minute. She then touched her head, touching the bandage wrapped around her head. “Where are those pricks?” she asked, my brows furrowed together in anger. I was stunned by the sudden anger. She moved from being confused to anger in a split second. It was quite odd. Before I could explain what else happened, she threw off the sheet lying on her body, pulled out the IV from her arm and all the cords attached to her, and stood up out of the bed. She started to sway a bit, trying to steady herself. I got up quickly, rushed over to the other side of the bed to help her back to bed. Every machine started beeping, loudly. She tried to take a step towards the door, only to stumble, almost falling to the ground, but luckily I caught her with my quick reflexes. “You should not be out of bed yet,” I told her, with concern. “I know that, but I am not going to stay in this bed any longer. Either help me or I will leave myself,” she replied, with a very serious look. I looked at her stunned, knowing she was going to leave, whether I attempted to help her or not. Talk about being stubborn to the core. 'Stubborn mate,' Titan complimented. 'I like that.' 'Me too,' I agreed. The door opened, three nurses and Doctor Blackwell ran into the room, only to stop in their tracks when they saw me. Instinctively, I pulled Adeline behind me to shield her from any danger. She tried to look around me, but my body mass prohibited her from seeing anything. “Alpha,” the nurses and doctor all mumbled. “Leave!” I ordered, my voice changed into a deeper and huskier voice, Titan on the surface. Everyone rushed out of the room quickly, with their heads still bowed, shutting the door behind them. I turned around, Titan was on the surface, but not in full control.Titan was taking in the full view of our mate. Looking her up and down, while licking his lips. “You look beautiful in anything, my delicate flower,” Titan complimented. “Uh… thanks,” she stuttered, confused. “But I am not yours and I am not delicate. I can hold my own, thank you,” her voice laced with attitude. “It’s just a nickname, sweetheart. Calm down!” Titan answered, his heart breaking with sadness at the words she used. 'So confident in herself,' he told me. “The only nickname I have is Addy. I realize our parents are liked, but you and I are not an item. I am definitely not someone who is loved or belongs in this pack as I am human, so please save me the heartache and just stay away from me,” she responded, her attitude showing her sassy personality. She backed up away from me. Titan did not like her backing away. 'Don't scar her Titan,' I reminded him. 'She does not know we are mates yet, she needs to find out for herself. Let me have back control now.' My whole face contorted, as I was fighting to keep Titan under control. I closed my eyes, trying to keep my cool and not scare her anymore than she already was. I could hear her heart beating erratically in her chest. I moved to the other side of the room, away from her. I could hear her struggling to get out of the room. I need to let her go right now. I need to get Titan under control so I can fix what just happened. I pushed Titan with all the willpower to the back of my mind. When I regained control, my alpha aura filled the air around us. I backed away, going to the opposite side of the room. I could hear Addy struggling to get to the door. I closed my eyes, bringing my aura back in. Taking a deep breath to center myself. I was finally able to calm myself down. ‘Titan, you better hope you did not scare our mate, or so help me,’ I warned him. ‘If I lose my chance of happiness with her because of your dumb Alpha ego. I will block you out for a whole month.’ He whimpered, ‘I’m sorry. You are right!’ I heard the door of the room open and she scooted out into the hallway. I finally centered myself, when I heard a high-pitched, eardrum scream of agony. I sniffed the air, blood. ‘Mate, go to mate,’ Titan growled at me. I did not even think twice, before I ran out of the room, only to see Doctor Blackwell and two nurses rushing down the hall towards me. I ran out the door to see Adeline lying on the ground screaming. The hand she was holding to her head was all bloody. I bent down, pulling her into my arms. Her body instantly relaxed, but she was still burning hot. Her skin was burning and clammy. I looked at Doctor Blackwell, who approached us, checking her over quickly. He looked just as confused as I was. He looked at Adeline's head wound. The stitches had reopened. "Get me some gauze and some muscle relaxers," Doctor Blackwell yelled to one of the nurses. The nurse ran into the supplies room and came running back with gloves, a needle filled with a clear liquid, and gauze in her hands. Dr. Blackwell put some gloves on first. He took the muscle relaxer and put it into the syringe. He then stuck the needle into her arm. I growled as she winced in pain before her body completely relaxed and she passed out in my arms. "What is happening? Why is she burning up?" I asked, worried about my mate. "I am not sure. I have never seen someone react like this before," Doctor Blackwell replied, honestly. "Go get a gurney, nurse Hettie." The older nurse got up, and grabbed the gurney that was sitting in the hallway two rooms down. I picked Adeline up and set her on the gurney gently. Doctor Blackwell was about to roll the gurney down the hall and into the OR room at the end of the hall through the double doors, when I heard the angry voice of my Aunt Katreena. "ADDY! That's my baby! What's happening to my baby?" Katreena yelled in agony as tears streamed down her face. Dr. Blackwell turned to a distraught Katreena and Axel. My parents and my Aunt and Uncle all stood before us. Their faces pull of pain and wanting answers. Axel grabbed Katreena just as she was about to fall to the floor sobbing, holding her up by wrapping both his arms around her torso from behind her. “LET ME GO! Who did this to my baby?” Katreena growled, her aura slipping out and her wolf, Raven, at the surface. Axel held her close to his chest, trying to calm her with the mate bond, but she was in protective mode. Someone hurt her baby and they were going to pay with their lives. Axel had tears streaming down his face as he stared at his daughter on the gurney. I never saw my uncle cry once. I guess seeing your only daughter like this will break even the strongest wolf. My mother stood in front of Katreena, blocking her view of Adeline. “Katreena, we have the ones responsible for what happened. You need to calm yourself down, to be with your daughter. Addy needs you,” Lily explained to her in a calm tone. Katreena’s body finally relaxed, but was still visibly tense, clearly responding to the mate bond and her best friend's words. ‘I can feel her wolf,’ Titan whimpered, seeing Adeline in pain was making him tense. ‘What,’ I gasped, shocked. ‘Are you sure?’ ‘No I just said it because I want her to be wolf-less. I can feel her wolf, dummy,’ Titan growled at me annoyed. Adeline’s body started to shake, as her bones began to break. Dr. Blackwell told the nurses to hold her down. I growled, making everyone freeze and stop what they were doing. All the attention turned to me. She’s shifting! Titan was galloping and howling in my head. ‘Mate, mate, mate,’ he yipped with glee. “Let her go, she is shifting,” I growled. Everyone gasped in confusion, but none-the-less raised their hands and stood by waiting for instructions. Everyone’s eyes stared at Adeline, as her body shifted and transformed into the most beautiful white wolf. Her and my parents stood there with their mouths dropped to the floor, completely gobsmacked. “Beautiful,” I mumbled, softly. I reached and touched her fur on her face. The tinglings buzzed against my skin like electricity. Titan was starting to give me a headache with all his giddiness. “She’s beautiful,” Katreena gasped, a smile and happy tears filling her eyes.
