CHAPTER ONE
OLIVIA This was the day my life changed forever. . . According to what I had been told, vampires didn't form lasting bonds with others. They simply indulged in relationships with women and had children. But my experience was different. You see, I have a mate—a werewolf mate, to be exact. He is a powerful Alpha, feared not only by vampires but also by his fellow werewolves. Strangely enough, I had been dreaming about my mate even before we crossed paths in reality. To my surprise, my mate turned out to be a sworn enemy of vampires, completely disregarding the peace treaty that had been established in the past. Fate led me to stumble into his territory, and I found myself in mortal danger. Fortunately, being the Alpha and my mate, he couldn't bring himself to kill me. My name is Olivia Morris, and this chain of events all started with my regular routine of being confined in a cell by my father, who happens to be the leader of the Sun Shade clan of vampires. This has been the pattern of my life for the past twenty years. I'm unsure of the reasons behind my imprisonment. All I know are the rumors whispered by the cruel vampires who guard my cell. Apparently, I am considered a disgrace to our kind. Why, you may wonder? It all boils down to my aversion to human blood. When I was born, they attempted to feed me a glass of human blood. However, before the crimson liquid touched my lips, I instinctively recoiled, using my hand to knock the cup away, causing the blood to splatter on the floor. My rejection of human blood made me an outcast, too peculiar to be allowed to roam freely. The truth is, I have no idea why I am different. Being unique was the very cause of my suffering in life—enduring beatings and relentless mockery. I wasn't even granted a proper bed to rest upon. Perhaps they believe I am unworthy of any comfort. That's why I find myself huddled close to a wall, my arms wrapped tightly around my knees as I seek solace. However, please understand that I am a vampire, and my survival depends on blood. Not human blood, though. Animal blood is what sustains me for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, although I don't partake in those conventional meals. Suddenly, something struck my head, causing it to sway, and I couldn't help but yelp at the impact. I shifted my gaze towards Roger, one of the guards who despised my very existence. "That's your nourishment, you worthless creature. You've been on good behavior lately, so you'll have deer blood," he sneered, accompanied by a disgusted expression. Fury welled up within me, and my eyes turned red with anger. I shot him a sidelong glare, simultaneously using my right pinky finger to scratch at my left, attempting to quell my boiling rage. They all regarded me with that same disdainful gaze, causing me to wonder just how repulsive or filthy I must appear. Ironically, I don't even know what I look like. Every passing second and every breath I took felt like further punishment, surpassing the mere discomfort of being confined in a filthy cage. I was growing weary of it all. My life had been an unending cycle since I was young. All I did was sleep, wake up, receive meager meals, sometimes endure beatings from the wretched individuals assigned to watch over me, and then repeat the cycle once more. I was reaching my limit with this existence, utterly fed up with every aspect of my life. If I had been granted the opportunity, I would have ended my own life long ago. Initially, there seemed to be no reason to continue living when I was certain that escape was an impossible feat. "Hey, Roger!" Another wicked guard named Jack called out, but I simply lowered my head, focusing my attention on the plastic bottle containing blood—the substance that served as my breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Why do they bother feeding me at all? Perhaps my father simply cannot bear the thought of me dead. That man is the individual whom I despised above all others. He imprisoned me in this place but never once revealed his face to me. "We managed to capture a few humans today. Those werewolves are starting to irritate our leader. Actually, they're irritating all of us," Jack informed. Werewolves, our mortal adversaries. They possess strength and speed equal to ours, although they lack the ability to hypnotize. Nevertheless, they pose a significant threat to us. A single bite from them can bring about our demise. "However, we must remain cautious. That foolish Alpha of the Night Walker pack is the source of the problem. His pack warriors are always vigilant at night, thwarting our plans. It's solely because of him that our lives have become so difficult. The other packs would be more accommodating," Roger said, his voice seething with anger. It felt like a corrosive acid. "Still, they are our enemies. I would do anything to eradicate those werewolves from the face of the earth. I despise those creatures," Jack declared, his voice brimming with the same anger. I kept hearing about this Alpha of the Night Walker pack because he appears to be the primary obstacle we are facing. A peace treaty was established ten years ago to end the war between werewolves, vampires, and even humans. In adherence to the treaty, they suppressed their animosity and began living their lives according to its rules. However, this Alpha of the Night Walker pack remained dissatisfied. He harbors a deep hatred for vampires, and the sentiment is reciprocated. As per the treaty, vampires are forbidden from killing humans. We can only adopt them, feed upon them, hypnotize them to erase their memories, and then return them to their homes. According to my friend, there is a possibility of a second war as the peace treaty may not endure indefinitely. Hatred between werewolves and vampires will persist since, ultimately, we can never be friends, and vampires possess an innate instinct to kill. It's conceivable that one of the clans might snap and violate the peace treaty. When two dominant creatures coexist, there is an inherent urge to fight and establish sole dominance. I can't help but wonder who will emerge victorious. I must admit that if the vampires were to triumph, it would lead to bloodshed. Soon, they all departed, leaving behind their remarks about me. After a mere two minutes, my friend arrived, ready to assist me in escaping from this place. A smile spread across my face as I stood up, filled with newfound hope. "I finally found the back entrance, so now that you have the opportunity, you need to make your escape," my friend whispered, her eyes darting around the hallway in fear as she unlocked the cage's locks. "It's fortunate they didn't use silver bars," she quipped, attempting to lighten the mood. I nodded in agreement, a surge of impatience coursing through me. I had yearned for an opportunity like this my entire life, and all I could manage to utter was a resolute "Yeah." With the lock finally opened, she swung the cage door wide open, and I stepped out cautiously. "Won't you be affected?" I asked, my worry evident in my voice. She chuckled softly. "No, don't worry. Trust me, no one would suspect me. Besides, the only ones who will be affected are Jack and Roger, fast asleep," she added with a hint of amusement. "Don't tell me..." She shrugged, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "It was the only way, Liv. Just a small dose of tranquilizing powder in their drinks was enough to put them out." I nodded in understanding. "That's clever." "They should consider themselves lucky I didn't use vervain instead," she added, handing me a bag which I eagerly took. "Now, you need to understand that the outside world is dangerous. You could be discovered by the werewolves, and they won't hesitate to kill you. You have to be cautious, Liv." Deep down, I couldn't deny the fear that gripped me. I had no idea what I would encounter or where I would go, but one thing was certain—I had to leave. I was desperate to escape the confines of this forsaken cell. I couldn't bear to spend another day, another second in this wretched place. "Come, let me guide you," she said, taking my hand and leading me away from the prison of my past.
