It is not a straight self help book. This author thought it best to relay to the readers various aspects of peace through a story to make the points more poignant and interesting. There are notes and case studies and worksheets to facilitate better understanding and recall. The story is also interactive as it ends in three options from which the reader can choose from to illustrate the importance of making the right choices, based on the teachings the protagonist gathers and the notes. I hope you enjoy and learn something helpful from the book. The Problem with Peace Although research show evidence of peace being an essential part of individual and collective well being, research also shows that finding lasting peace is difficult due to complex, interwoven factors, including human nature, political instability, economic inequality, and the persistence of harmful ideologies. Research highlights that these factors contribute to make it challenging to establish sustainable peace: Human Nature Tribalism: Humans tend to form "us vs. them" mentality, leading to prejudice and discrimination against outgroups. Exploitative Leaders: Leaders gain power by exploiting these tribal tendencies, fostering division and conflict by demonizing opposing groups. Confirmation Bias: Individuals are more likely to accept information that confirms their existing beliefs, making it difficult to engage in rational dialogue and compromise. Political Instability Lack of Trust - Trust in institutions and governance is crucial for peace. When trust is eroded, it becomes harder to resolve disputes peacefully. Weak Governance - Ineffective or corrupt governance can lead to widespread inequality and resentment, making it easier for conflicts to erupt. Political Extremism - Extremist ideologies can fuel violence and make it difficult to achieve compromise. Economic Inequality Economic Disparities - Extreme wealth inequality can create resentment and a sense of injustice, leading to social unrest and conflict. Lack of Economic Opportunity - Limited access to education, employment, and basic needs can fuel despair and frustration, making people more susceptible to violence and extremism. Perception Biases Perceptions of Conflict Immutability: The belief that conflicts are intractable can further exacerbate them, as individuals and societies adopt a sense of hopelessness and despair. The "Automatic Fear of the Unknown Challenge": Fear of the unknown and the potential for violence can make it difficult to engage in peacemaking processes. Reactive vs. Proactive Approaches: Many conflict control efforts are reactive, focusing on managing conflict rather than addressing its underlying causes. Statistics on Peace The Global Peace Index (GPI) provides a comprehensive overview of global peacefulness, assessing countries based on factors like conflict, safety, and security. Globally, peacefulness has seen a deterioration in recent years, with some regions experiencing more significant declines than others. The GPI identifies Iceland, Ireland, Austria, New Zealand, and Singapore as some of the most peaceful countries, while Yemen, Sudan, and South Sudan are among the least peaceful. Key Trends and Statistics Global Deterioration The Global Peace Index indicates a general decline in global peacefulness, with the 2024 edition revealing a 6% decrease over the past 16 years. Regional Variations The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region consistently ranks as the least peaceful, while Europe remains relatively peaceful, albeit with some recent deterioration. Factors Influencing Peacefulness The GPI assesses peacefulness based on factors like the intensity of internal conflict, relations with neighboring countries, societal safety, and the impact of terrorism. Economic Impact of Violence The Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) estimates the global economic impact of violence at $14.5 trillion in 2019, equivalent to 10.6% of global GDP. Displacement In 2023, an estimated 117.3 million people were forcibly displaced globally due to conflict and violence, a 70% increase compared to 2018. Positive Peace The Institute for Economics & Peace also assesses "positive peace," which focuses on factors like societal well-being, good governance, and inclusivity, finding that while some countries have made progress in these areas, others have experienced deterioration. It is therefore critical that peace be further researched and findings be promoted. Peace education is a requirement for peace to grow in the world. The author hopes that this book will be useful in peace education, bringing a simple but compelling understanding of peace.
