Chapter 20: What's Ours

687 Words
Aria Marcus was arrested three days later, quietly, without the kind of public spectacle he'd clearly been hoping his scheme would avoid. Stan's lawyers moved fast once Yvette's messages were in hand, coordinating with the district attorney's office before Marcus had any chance to cover his tracks further. I heard about the arrest from Stan himself, standing in my kitchen on a Thursday evening, relief written plainly across his face for the first time in weeks. "It's done," he said. "Extortion, attempted corporate sabotage. He's not walking away from this easily." "How do you feel?" "Lighter." He exhaled, long and slow, like he'd been holding his breath for the better part of a month. "I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, some new complication, but I think, for the first time in a while, there genuinely isn't one." "That's a strange feeling, isn't it. Nothing left to brace for." "Strange," he agreed, "but good." We stood there in my kitchen, the quiet settling comfortably between us in a way that had become, over the last month, less rare and more familiar, and I found myself studying him, the specific relief in his shoulders, the way exhaustion and hope sat together on his face without canceling each other out. "Can I ask you something," I said. "Anything." "That night. At your apartment. Before your phone rang." I felt my pulse pick up, saying it out loud finally, after days of careful avoidance. "Did you mean what you said? About being in love with me since you were fifteen?" Something in his expression went very still, unguarded in a way I'd rarely seen from him. "Every word of it," he said quietly. "I've never meant anything more in my entire life." "I need you to know something too, then." My voice came out steadier than I expected, honest in a way that no longer frightened me the way it used to. "I think some part of me never stopped either. I spent twelve years building an entire life specifically designed to avoid ever admitting that, and it didn't work, Stan. Not really. You were always there, underneath everything." He crossed the kitchen slowly, giving me every chance to step back, the same careful patience he'd offered me since that first morning in his bed, and I didn't move away, didn't want to move away, some reckless, hopeful part of me finally done bracing for the loss of something before it had even happened. "Aria," he said, low, close enough now that I could feel the warmth of him. "I know," I said softly. "I feel it too." His hand came up to my face, gentle, questioning, and I leaned into it before he'd fully finished asking, some twelve year old ache finally, quietly, settling into place. When he kissed me, it wasn't the reckless, champagne blurred collision of the gala night. It was slow, deliberate, careful in the way two people are careful with something they've already lost once and refuse to break again, and I felt every wall I'd spent twelve years building come down, not with a crash, but with the quiet, inevitable ease of something that had always, underneath everything else, been true. When we finally broke apart, his forehead resting against mine, both of us slightly breathless, he laughed, quiet and disbelieving, like he couldn't quite trust the moment was real. "Twelve years," he murmured. "I don't want to waste any more of them being careful." "Neither do I." "So what happens now?" I thought about the last month, the blackmail resolved, his father's uncertain opening, the baby growing steadily inside me, the twelve years of distance finally, impossibly, closing. None of it felt simple. None of it felt finished. But for the first time since I'd opened my eyes in his bed, it felt like something I was choosing instead of something happening to me. "Now," I said, "we figure it out together. All of it. No more armor." "No more armor," he agreed, and kissed me again, slower this time, like we finally, genuinely, had all the time in the world.
