Charter 1: Mysterious blood test
On a main thoroughfare within the walls of the Ximen Satellite City, the sky was obscured by ominous clouds. Pedestrians hurriedly bustled about, heads bowed, dressed in drab and conservative attire. Each person was engaged in bustling trade to secure their livelihood. Three newcomers, dressed conspicuously and remarkably different from the rest, were intercepted by a group of patrol guards clad in dark golden armor. This was a world where technology and magic intertwined, and both of these unnatural languages served as conduits for harnessing advanced energies from the cosmos. The Dragon Clan served as Earth's guardians. Many years ago, a group of extraterrestrial beings coveted Earth's abundant resources and, in collaboration, breached the planet's defenses, invading the homeland and slaughtering the dragons. Nations and cities fell into silence. The extraterrestrials burnt all knowledge of magic and massacred the dragon people, propagating their foreign beliefs and coercing the locals to convert. Today, all magical heritage was severed, and core technology fell into the hands of the extraterrestrials. Political factions divided, and hearts were in turmoil. During this period, interpersonal conflicts gave rise to many mutants and genetically engineered hybrid races in the wilderness as everyone fought for survival. The three figures before us, two women and one man, seemed rather young. The tall and well-proportioned woman led the group, her healthy complexion and athletic physique hidden beneath the gray fabric that snugly wrapped her head and face. Her eyes, deep and enigmatic, revealed only a pair of beautiful gray-blue irises. It appeared that she had only one natural arm, with the other being a custom-made mechanical limb. Since true bionic prosthetic technology was controlled by the extraterrestrials and came at a high price, this makeshift arm was not particularly agile and remained concealed beneath her oversized sleeve. She carried a massive blade with a thick cloth cover strapped to her back. A slightly shorter girl with red hair and small freckles followed closely behind the leader. Her clear, emerald-green eyes and a birthmark in the shape of a three-leaf clover adorned her forehead. Her clothing bore the charming inscription "Sara." She carried various vials and containers, which emitted crisp sounds, hinting at her role as the team's medic. The last member was a tall, handsome man with golden hair, wearing sunglasses and nonchalantly shuffling his hands in his pockets while scanning his surroundings. "Unauthorized intrusion detected. Please show your identification cards," the leading mechanical soldier raised his spear, aiming it at the trio. "What? Unauthorized? Are you kidding me?" Upon hearing this, the suave and sunny man on the right removed his sunglasses, revealing brilliant gem-like eyes, and raised an eyebrow. His posture was carefree and languid, with a cascade of flowing locks escaping from his headscarf. His features were strikingly fair, and in the backlight, he appeared to be a male celebrity from a highway billboard. He then turned to the leading woman and asked, "Jessica, what's going on?" The one-armed woman with the gray-blue eyes raised her left hand and projected an electronic identification card with green patterns. "Name: Jessica. Age: 19. Height: 178cm. Occupation: Freelance Hunter (Honor: B-Rank Hunter of the Green Diamond Guild)." The two others also presented their identity cards. They were Daniel, a 19-year-old mechanic, and Sara, a 16-year-old apothecary. In this wilderness, there were four major hunter guilds recognized by the secular world: the Cold Maple Guild in the north, the Green Diamond Guild in the south, the Red Dawn Guild in the east, and the Dark Gold Eagle Guild in the west. Each guild had numerous wilderness hunters, ranging from freelancers to specialized mercenaries. Hunter ranks were roughly classified as S, A, B, C, D, E, and F. While some of their tasks overlapped, the honor titles were specific to each guild, and when moving between guilds, one had to accumulate rank through new tasks. Passersby had their gazes fixed on the three individuals, and murmurs could be heard from the crowd behind. After a long pause during the mechanical soldier's electronic verification, a burly orc soldier approached, furrowing his brow. "Are you the leader of your team?... I apologize for my abruptness, but please come with me. Your teammates can stay." The orc's furry arm rested on Jessica's shoulder, creating a patch of shade from the sun. "Why?!" Sara's green eyes widened, her voice as melodious as a silver bell, clutching Jessica's sleeve tightly. Daniel ran his hand through his hair and seemed nonchalant, holding a small mirror and inspecting himself. "Are you deliberately wasting our time?" he asked. The orc soldier's smile remained unchanged as he replied, "Don't worry, it's just a blood test. It's become a regular procedure for the Western Federation to check people from the north in recent years. I assume you've just arrived in the city of Hawks today. Someone will arrange accommodations for you." Jessica squinted her gray-blue eyes and then took a step forward. "I'll go with you." The burly orc soldier led Jessica through the streets and alleys to an imposing private castle. Two mechanical male attendants approached from the front, and their gazes gradually disappeared as the castle gate closed behind them. The fountain flowed, and flowers and plants flourished in the courtyard. The lead mechanical attendant covered Jessica's eyes and pressed a few buttons on a fake stone in the courtyard. A biomechanical secret door mechanically opened, revealing a long, dimly lit corridor. The corridor was narrow, dimly lit, and exuded a sinister atmosphere and deathly silence. Occasionally, the sounds of unknown creatures flapping their wings could be heard. Jessica mentally noted the directions as she proceeded. Twenty steps, left turn, seventy steps, right turn, up a flight of stairs... What kind of blood testing room is located in a private castle? Jessica navigated around numerous corners and staircases and was starting to feel disoriented when the mechanical attendant opened another hidden door, leading her inside. Suddenly, she felt a soft touch beneath her feet—carpet! At the same time, a scent wafted through the air, faint but pervading the entire space, as if it were a high-end wood fragrance with the main note of Eastern Butterflywood... No, there seemed to be a subtle hint of blood! Jessica couldn't help but sneeze, and then the male attendant signaled her to hush. ...This was clearly no ordinary blood test! The mechanical male attendant retreated, and the heavy secret door slammed shut behind Jessica. She's trapped! Jessica, who had been peaceful until now, sprang to action like a coiled spring. She swiftly drew her blade, taking a defensive stance, and removed her eye mask. Before her was a grand circular hall with a retro style dating back several centuries, a rarity in the current post-apocalyptic world. Such a useless design wasn't as sturdy as technological fortifications, nor as intimidating as cursed domains. Who would have known that the hidden door in the basement of a private castle would lead to such a place, as if time had reversed, Jessica thought. The hall was spacious but cold, with luxurious carpets covering the floor. The smooth and pitch-black walls were devoid of any decoration except for the candlelight illuminating the surroundings. Aside from the entrance she came through, there didn't appear to be any other doors in or out. In the center of the hall was a high stone platform with a well-dressed man seated on a luxurious chair, with neatly arranged bags of blood by his side. The man's imposing presence gave Jessica an uneasy feeling. Thud, thud, thud. Her heart raced, and Jessica quietly turned to see if she could find a switch on the stone door she came through. "Do you have Northern blood?" a hoarse, deep, and magnetic voice echoed through the hall. Like a noble from centuries past, the man with black hair had lowered his eyes, a calm expression on his face. His hands were crossed in front of his chest, and his long eyelashes cast a shadow. His deep facial features and pale complexion seemed to shift between bright and dull in the flickering candlelight. The inherent dominance of a high-ranking being over a low-ranking one hadn't disappeared, and Jessica couldn't help but shiver uncontrollably. She almost gave up on opening the door. "I should... but I'm an orphan, and I've never met my parents, so I'm not sure of my exact lineage." That was indeed the truth. Jessica was picked up by a fleeing couple at the age of six on the outskirts of a nuclear explosion experiment. Along with Daniel, she embarked on a nomadic life in the wilderness, with no memories before that time. She only knew that she possessed many features characteristic of the Northern people, such as her shallow gray-blue eye irises, tall and well-proportioned figure, deep-set eyes, and a slender, high nose bridge. However, she also had the soft, sensual lips and tanned skin typical of Southern people. "Are you injured? I smell blood." The man before her spoke with an air of dignity, though his voice carried a hint of subtle impatience. This set off alarm bells in Jessica's mind. "During a mission, my face was hit by flying rocks..." Jessica's facial scales didn't cover her entire face, and she didn't get to finish her sentence before the high-seated man suddenly stirred. Enormous, pitch-black bat wings unfurled from his back. The man dove towards Jessica from above, and then, with evident effort, stopped just an inch away from her nose. He quickly retracted his wings. ...A vampire! Weren't they supposed to be nearly extinct? The speed... there was no way to escape.
