chapter 1. Mona
"It's over, Mona. I have tried to make it work, but we both know I did this because I was asked to. Since grandma is gone, you are free. I know you married me for the money. I know you did this because your family asked you to. You don't have to anymore," Frederick's voice brings me out of my thoughts. she wanted to say a lot to him right now, but she didn't have the strength. she felt so alone in a mansion full of hundreds of employees and family members. So lost, like she didn't belong in this place because shr didn't. Mrs. Kortez was the only person who had even accepted her in this family, wanted her. Every single person in this family looked down upon and belittled her for who she was. And now, the only real family she ever had is gone, and my husband of three years couldn't even wait for her burial. He was already asking for a divorce. Feeling detached, she look at Frederick, really look at him. Why was she married to him? Right, because her family thought they could hide the fact that they were bankrupt by marrying her off to the richest family.
"Can you wait for grandma to at least be buried? It's hardly twenty hours since she died. Let's do this after the burial."
"So that I can give you time to snatch more of my family's money or find a way to keep me married to you? Not happening. You will sign the papers as soon as the lawyer can draw them. Do I make myself clear?" He did make himself clear, how he thought of me every day of our marriage. He made sure she remembered she was only his wife because he had to, not because he wanted to. He made sure she knew he would never love her or see her as his wife for as long as they were married. He made sure she understood him perfectly clearly all the time. So this was nothing new.
"I will be sleeping at Aria's place. Don't bother waiting," he says as he walks out. As if she was going to bother doing that. she had bigger things to think about. All she ever knew was being stripped away. Her own family didn't even want her if she got divorced by Frederick. she was all on my own.
That night, she sat out in the yard, her favorite spot, looking at the stars, wondering where life would lead her. "Miss Mona, it's cold, and it's not good for your health," it was Felipe, Mrs. Kortez's butler and trusted employee. He was among the staff that still treated her with respect, the only friend in the place, the only person who never judged her, the only one who took the time to really know her. He was also the only one who agreed to call still call her Miss. she didn't feel married so what was the use of going by Mrs Arnaldo.
"What do I do, Felipe? She is gone. The only real family I had is gone. I feel like I have even forgotten how to cry, to feel. I can't even cope with everything that is going on. Do you know Frederick asked for a divorce? He couldn't even wait for his grandmother to be buried before he ran to his mistress." Felipe puts the blanket he had been holding over her shoulders and sits next to her. she was in an emotional turmoil right now, but she could use a friend to discuss my emotions at the moment.
"You knew this was a long way coming. It's not like your husband has been hiding the fact he didn't love you. If it wasn't for his grandmother threatening to disown him, you would still be seeing pictures of him all over the internet with that Aria woman. Have you told him yet?" Felipe asks, knowing fully well that she hadn't.
Shaking her head no, Mona says, "Please promise me one thing, Felipe. Don't tell Frederick I am pregnant. I don't want him staying with me because he has to. Grandma died still keeping it to heart. He might even try to make me get rid of it to make sure I am never getting back to this family." She touches her belly and looks at Felipe. "This is the only hope to live I have left. I was feeling really empty a few days ago, but since I found out I am pregnant, I don't want anything or anyone threatening that. Please don't say anything. I will divorce him and disappear. Raise my child somewhere else, away from this pain and uncertainty." For the first time, tears decided to spill. She had been feeling like an empty vase, like she would never be able to fill something, but the child growing within her belly had made her feel for the first time in two years.
"You are crying."
"Yes, Felipe. Because I am going to become a mother, and I am going to do it away from these people. I want to give my child a different life, one where they can truly understand and experience love."
Felipe looks concerned and places a hand on her shoulder. "Do not make those choices before the will is read, Miss Mona."
Mona takes a deep breath, wiping her tears away. "You're right, Felipe. I should wait for the will to be read, but I need to be prepared for whatever it contains. The way things are going with Frederick, it's clear that this family won't welcome us."
Felipe nods in understanding. "I'll stand by you, Miss Mona, whatever you decide to do. But remember, that child growing inside you is a symbol of hope and a new beginning."
Mona manages a faint smile. "Thank you, Felipe. I appreciate your support more than you can imagine. Let's wait for the will and then I'll make my decision. But no matter what, my child will have a chance at a better life."
Then, a troubling thought struck Mona. "Is there something I should know?" she asked, her voice tinged with concern.
Felipe paused for a moment, meeting her eyes with a steady gaze. "Just know, Miss Mona, that I will be here if you need help," he replied reassuringly. With those words, he turned and began to walk away, his presence fading into the shadows.
The happiness she had briefly felt was now a distant memory, swept away by the gusts of uncertainty that clung to tomorrow like a heavy fog. As she pondered the secrets that might be unveiled when the will was finally read, Mona couldn't shake the feeling that her life was about to take an unexpected turn.
