CHAPTER1
Megan Braxton sat by the large window in her father’s mansion, staring at the city lights. Los Angeles never slept, and neither did the dangers that lurked in its streets. She had grown up surrounded by crime, power, and bloodshed. Her father, Peter Braxton, was one of the most feared drug lords in the city. People respected him but they also feared him. Megan had never wanted this life. She had never wanted to be the daughter of a man whose name was whispered in fear. But there were things she had no control over. And love was one of them. She had met Ben Johnson when she was just fifteen. He had been a boy with sharp eyes, a cocky smile, and a last name that made her father furious. The Johnsons and the Braxtons had been enemies for years, rivals in the drug business, constantly at war for control. She knew she wasn’t supposed to talk to Ben. But something about him pulled her in. He wasn’t like the men her father surrounded himself with cold, violent, power-hungry. Ben was different. He made her laugh. He made her feel safe. And over the years, their love had only grown stronger. Now, at twenty-two, Megan knew what she wanted. She wanted Ben. And she didn’t care what her father thought. But her father cared. That night, as Megan sat by the window, she heard the heavy footsteps of her father approaching. The door to her room swung open, and Peter Braxton stepped inside. His face was hard, his dark eyes filled with anger. “I heard something disturbing today,” he said, his voice low but dangerous. Megan didn’t flinch. She knew what was coming. “You’re still seeing that Johnson boy,” he continued. “Even after I warned you.” Megan lifted her chin. “I love him.” Peter’s jaw tightened. “Love? Do you know what the Johnsons have done to our family? To our business? They are our enemies, Megan. This isn’t a fairy tale. If you continue this, you’ll bring war to our doorstep.” “There’s already a war,” Megan said, her voice steady. “And it’s not because of me and Ben. It’s because you and his father can’t let go of the past.” Peter slammed his fist on the table. “This ends now. You will not see him again. If you do, I will make sure he regrets ever meeting you.” Megan’s heart pounded. “You can’t control me forever, Dad.” Peter leaned in close, his voice turning cold. “Watch me.” Then he turned and walked out of the room, slamming the door behind him. Megan swallowed hard, her hands shaking. She knew her father meant every word. He wasn’t just threatening Ben he was ready to destroy him. She had to warn him. Grabbing her phone, she quickly dialed Ben’s number. He picked up after one ring. “Megan?” His voice was calm, but she could hear the concern in it. “Ben, we have a problem,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “My father knows. And he’s coming for you.” There was silence on the other end. Then Ben said, “Let him come.” Megan’s fingers tightened around her phone. She could hear the steady breathing on the other end of the call. Ben wasn’t afraid. He never was. But this wasn’t just a small problem. This was her father. And Peter Braxton didn’t make empty threats. “Ben, listen to me,” she whispered, her heart pounding. “He’s serious. He will hurt you.” Ben let out a slow breath. “Megan, I knew this day would come. Your father was never going to let this happen.” His voice softened. “But I won’t leave you. No matter what.” Tears stung Megan’s eyes. She wanted to believe him. But she knew what her father was capable of. If Peter Braxton wanted Ben gone, he wouldn’t stop until he got what he wanted. “We need to meet,” she said quickly. “Now. Before things get worse.” “I’ll be there in fifteen minutes,” Ben said without hesitation. Megan ended the call and grabbed her jacket. Her hands were shaking as she pulled it over her shoulders. She needed to get out of the house without her father noticing. The mansion was silent as she stepped into the hallway. Most of the men who worked for her father were outside, guarding the gates or patrolling the property. But she knew there would be a few inside, watching, always watching. She moved quickly, her heart pounding with every step. She took the back staircase, avoiding the main hall where she knew her father would be. The kitchen was empty, just as she had hoped. Slipping through the back door, she stepped into the cool night air. The gates were locked, but she knew the side fence had a weak spot. She had discovered it years ago when she needed to sneak out without her father’s men noticing. Moving quickly, she climbed over it and landed on the other side. Her car was parked a few streets away. She ran to it, her hands trembling as she fumbled with the keys. As soon as the engine roared to life, she sped off, heading toward the place where she and Ben always met the abandoned warehouse by the docks. Ben was already there when she arrived. He leaned against his black car, his arms crossed over his chest. His dark eyes locked onto hers as she stepped out of her car. “You got out,” he said, his voice calm. Megan nodded. “Barely.” She took a deep breath. “Ben, this is bad. My father” “I know,” Ben cut in. “My father does too. He said the Braxtons have been making moves. My men saw them near our territory today. Your father is preparing for something.” Megan swallowed hard. “This is because of us.” Ben shook his head. “No. This war has been building for years. You and I just gave them a reason to finally start it.” Megan felt a chill run down her spine. She had always known her father and Ben’s father were enemies. But she had hoped prayed that somehow, their love could change things. Now, it seemed it had only made things worse. “What do we do?” she whispered. Ben reached out, taking her hand in his. His touch was warm, steady. “We fight,” he said simply. “I won’t let your father scare me away. And I won’t let mine force me to leave you.” Megan wanted to believe him. But she knew their fathers. They were powerful. Ruthless. If a war started between them, there would be no turning back. A sudden noise made them both freeze. Footsteps. Megan’s breath caught in her throat. Ben’s grip on her hand tightened. He pulled her behind him, his body tense. The footsteps grew louder. Then a shadow emerged from behind one of the old shipping containers. Megan’s stomach dropped. It was one of her father’s men. And he was holding a gun.
