THE NEIGHBORS

Chapter 3 After settling down it’s already late and I still have to deliver the cupcakes to the new neighbors which I know will be so exhausting and annoying when they don’t open their doors to strangers like me or they give me the bad eye saying “Your not welcome here”. Carrying four boxes of cupcakes out of the house I was confused where to start from so I decided to start from the house on my left. So I walk to the short gate greeted the gateman I saw and he led me in as I walked to the door I was scared because the house was quiet and the gateman kept staring at me which was so uncomfortable. I had to drop the boxes of cupcakes to ring the door bell, I rang it ones no one came to open the door and on my second ring I hear footsteps and the door opens and I see a boy about my age or I guess older than me who is so hot that I couldn’t even talk. Hey…. “Who are you?” he asked. I’m Winter your new neighbor I leave right there pointing out to the house, well sorry I had to bother you this evening my mum asked me to deliver this to this family I went on saying it’s a tradition hoping we’re welcome to the hood. He laughs and I’m wondering if I sounded funny, “welcome to the hood” he said laughing. Okay so this thing isn’t funny….Does that sound funny to you I asked as I picked the box of cupcakes to hand it over to him and he said “it’s actually funny you calling here a hood with your sweet British accent, it’s a community after all”. Before I could reply I was interrupted by his mothers loud voice calling out his name “ South” , yes mum he answered  “Who is at the door?” she asked and he went on it’s the new neighbors mum, “then let them in” she said in a polite way.       He collected the box of cupcakes from me and I picked up the three other boxes on the floor and he led me inside the big building which was so beautiful, the interior was “Woow” I’m so speechless. A woman came out of a door on my right and she welcomed me, asked me to sit down “well I’m sure that’s the mum” I thought and  she took the box of cupcakes from her son. She introduced herself as Mrs Smith and asked my name after telling her Winter she smiled ,then asked me about my parents  she then thanked me for the cupcakes and said “ I will come over tomorrow to thank your mum myself” that’s sounded different because no one does that were I come from. I stood up to leave when she called out her sons name and asked him to walk me out then she returned back to what she was doing. As I came out of the door South asked to help me with the boxes I was holding before I could decline he had already collected it from me. “That’s so gentle of you” I said and he smiled So where are you from? He asked I’m from London but I’m Nigerian. Is this your first time in Nigeria? He asked. Yes I answered . As we walked pass my house to the next house to deliver the next box he kept staring I knew he had a lot to ask me but he kept quite  which made the whole walk silent and awkward .So we delivered to the Johnsons family who had three children and they were so nice to us. Then to the next family the Wilsons who have two children, who gave us the bad eye as I predicted earlier. As we left the house we both burst into laughter, they were so rude to us in an awkward way. Well now we are at the door of the last family the “Adepojus” South said. They didn’t let us in “we don’t collect gifts “they said and shut the door at us, that was so rude I said and walked away leaving South behind. South walked up to me and I had to ask him if people here in Lagos were always like this, all he said was “this is Nigeria” meaning things are different here. As we walked home we got talking and he asked me for my number and I told him I just got here and I haven’t upgraded to any Nigerian network, I got to my house collected the last box of cupcakes from him told him goodnight and went inside.
