While they were eating, Emily was conscious of the eyes of other diners upon her. likewise, Emily sensed that the days ahead might not be easy for her.
Jonathan's voice brought her back to the charming atmosphere of the restaurant.
Johnathan looked at her and said quietly,
" if having dinner with you is considered destructive to my health, I can think of no better way of being destroyed. "
They both laughed. Looking at her watch.
Emily said, " It is almost one o'clock, you know. Perhaps we should forgo dessert."
Johnathan reluctantly agreed, admitting he did have to be on the hill early. " a few of us meet each Friday morning for prayers before tackling the problems of our world. I'm very thankful for that special time together-it really helps."
"I wish there were something like that in my family," she said reflectively, reaching for her handbag.
Johnathan took her hand from across the table and held it tightly. "He's with you wherever you are, Emily. Don't forget."
She nodded, her eyes beginning to fill with tears. He continued, "I'm looking forward to spend a great of time with you , Emily."
"I would like that," she said softly.
His voice seemed to hold the promise of many wonderful days ahead to be spent together.
As they walked through the restaurant, Emily noticed someone who works for her uncle Douglass sitting at a nearby table and their eyes met.
Johnathan opened the restaurant door for Emily and she glanced back to see that man as he is heading for the telephone.
Emily was awakened by the telephone the next morning. Her aunt Catherine's voice sounded somewhat disturbed beneath her " Good morning. "
Arranging her pillow and sitting up, Emily tried to awaken, but she had experienced differenty sleeping and now the morning light shining through the window and her aunt Catherine's bright voice were an unwelcome intrusion.
"Have you see the time?" Aunt Catherine asked.
"Aunt, I haven't even seen the morning yet. Whatever is wrong? I do need my beauty sleep you know." She was trying not to make her aunt worried.
"Well, can we meet I want to tell you something?"
"Okay I will be there."
"No don't come here I will come there."
Emily Begin to worry and said, " what's wrong aunt?"
"I will tell you every thing when we meet."
"Okay aunt I will be waiting for you Aunt."
"Alright take care of yourself my Daughter."
"Thank you Aunt Catherine, you take care also."
While aunt Catherine was talking to Emily, Douglass could hear everything they were saying.
Emily is very worried about what aunt Catherine said to her.
Emily went downstairs to make coffee, while making coffee the telephone rang and it was Johnathan. "Hi how did you enjoy our madly romantic dinner last night?" His voice had a rather delighted tone.
"Am fine thanks, how are you?"
"Am good thanks."
He paused for a moment.
"Emily, I wanted to tell you something, about your parents death, I think someone was involved in your parents death.
" what, do you know who was it?"
"Not yet but he or she was close to your family."
"I think you are right Johnathan, because my father was not loved by everything in the family."
"So I was right, don't worry I will find out."
"Thank you very much Johnathan."
"Always welcome, come we are friends now right?"
"Yes we are." Emily poured herself a cup of coffee and smiled. "I'm glad to have you as my friend," she whispered. "But then I'm still not thinking clearly."
"Me too I am glad that we are friends." Charmed by her warm, understanding personality that now seemed to becoming a part of her life. Catching sight of himself in the small mirror near the kitchen sink, he could see that he was radiating happiness, even though there was still a feeling of uneasiness.
Emily made herself a piece of toast and, looking out of the window, she saw that the hazy summer sun was causing shadows beneath the large oak tree where she had sat with Johnathan that night before. She unbolted the back door and carried her coffee and toast into the already oppressive, sultry air. Sitting at the table, she remembered how Johnathan had stretched out, so relaxed. The days ahead, she hoped, would find him often at her house...
Her thoughts turned to her parents death and she felt a chill go through her. Emily could not bear to think of them going forever.
She put her elbows on the table and bowing her head in her hands, she prayed, " father, help me, I do forget so often that you are really so close to me and that you want me to lean on you at times like these. Please, right at this moment comfort me and my younger sister in everything we do..."
The sound of the telephone ringing intrusively into her time of quiet made Emily reluctantly stand to her feet. Hastily looking around at the flowers in the garden, she made a mental note to water them while waiting for aunt Catherine.
Aunt Catherine was the one calling her. "Emily I am about to leaving home now I will be coming with Maureen."
"Okay Aunt Catherine, see you."
"Okay my Daughter."
