CHAPTER THIRTEEN With his wings badly burned, Dax struggled to fly back to where he’d left his satchel. When he finally made it, it took all his remaining strength to force his body to shift, internalizing all the damage under the thin skin of his other form. He hiked the distance back toward Jane’s lab, and reached it just as the sun began to set. “You look like shit.” Jane rushed him inside. “What the hell were you doing out there?” “The volcano,” he panted, out of breath and exhausted. “And you told me not to go.
