CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO Talking to the police was becoming a habit, though not one she relished. As soon as the cops left, Colt took her home. Her objections didn’t last long in the face of his determination; the shooting shook him up. At home, he took her upstairs, into her own bed. Maybe for his own piece of mind, he’d left her there to complete the ritual of checking out the house himself. For her, his kisses were an easy, welcome distraction. With him in the house, vulnerability wasn’t an issue. On the new day, as she worked, the occasional footfalls echoing from the ceiling reminded her he was still there, watching over her.
