The drought continued to tighten its grip on Ngoya village. The fields were dry, the harvest had almost disappeared, and many families were running out of food. Yet Kofi refused to surrender to despair.
Early one morning, he walked through the village, greeting the elders and encouraging every family he met. Though their faces reflected fear, Kofi believed that hope could still be restored if everyone worked together.
That afternoon, he gathered the villagers in the marketplace.
"My friends," he began, "we cannot wait for others to rescue us. If we stand together, we can survive this difficult season."
Some people remained silent, while others questioned whether there was any hope left.
Kofi continued, "I have a plan. Let us create a village food bank. Every family should contribute whatever they can spare—grains, dried cassava, beans, or any food that can help those with nothing. We will also seek help from neighboring villages until the rains return."
The crowd looked at one another. For a moment, no one spoke.
Then Aisha stepped forward.
"I have some dried cassava at home," she said. "It is not much, but I am willing to share it."
Her courage inspired others.
"I will bring beans," one farmer called out.
"I still have millet in storage," another added.
Soon, many villagers volunteered to contribute what little they had. What had begun as fear slowly turned into determination.
Over the following days, Kofi worked tirelessly. He visited nearby communities, explained the hardships facing Ngoya, and appealed for support. Some neighboring villages donated food and farming supplies, while others promised to share knowledge about surviving long periods of drought.
As the food bank began to fill, smiles slowly returned to the faces of hungry children. For the first time in many weeks, the people believed that tomorrow could be better than today.
But just as hope began to grow, new disagreements started to emerge among some villagers. Not everyone trusted Kofi's leadership, and their growing doubts threatened to divide the community once again.
