CHAPTER FOURTEEN Kane Wilcox leaned back in his chair and ran his hands down his face, feeling like he’d been hit by a truck. He was getting too old for this s**t. Right now, his wife Dana was in Corpus Christi, probably enjoying dinner with her friends. Since he was away most of the time, she’d managed to grow a healthy social circle of people she was close to. But none of those people knew Kane, and he didn’t know them, either. He imagined if he did finally retire, he’d have to get to know them all, and that sounded like work in itself. Better to stick to what he knew, what he was good at. The job. But though he’d been proud of his accomplishments in recent years, he couldn’t say he felt that way, now. It was because of Mia North. He’d never gone this long without finding his man. N
