Maya's eyes sparkled as she gazed out the window, her mind whirling with plans for the future. Next year, she'd turn 24, and with it, a sense of restlessness had settled within her. turning 24 chapter 1
Maya's hands trembled as she loaded her luggage into the car, her eyes welling up with tears. Her mom stood beside her, sobbing uncontrollably. "Do you really have to go so far away from us?" she asked, her voice cracking with emotion. Maya's resolve wavered for a moment, but she steeled herself. "Yes, Mum, I have to," she said firmly. "I need to find myself and make my own name. I'm 24 now, and I feel like I've been living in your shadow for too long. I want to prove to myself that I can do this." Her father stepped forward, his voice calm and reassuring. "We're proud of you, Maya," he said, his eyes shining with tears. "This is a great opportunity for you to spread your wings and fly. We'll miss you, but we know you'll make us proud." With a final glance at her tear-stained parents, Maya bid them farewell and slipped into the car. As the vehicle pulled away, she felt a pang of doubt. Was she making a mistake? The uncertainty lingered as she drove towards a new city, one she'd never been to before. The landscape blurred outside her window as her mind wandered. She thought about the secretary job she'd landed, the one that had prompted her to take this leap. "This is my sign to get my life together," she'd told herself. She imagined herself succeeding, making new friends, and building a life of her own. As the hours passed, fatigue began to creep in. Maya's eyelids grew heavy, and she finally drifted off to sleep, the hum of the engine lulling her into a fitful slumber. Though her heart was filled with uncertainty, she knew she had to take this chance to forge her own path and discover who she was meant to be. When she woke up, the scenery outside had changed. The city skyline rose in the distance, a towering presence that both intimidated and excited her. Maya took a deep breath, feeling a sense of determination wash over her. She was ready to start this new chapter of her life to face whatever challenges came her way. Maya took a deep breath, savouring the unfamiliar scents of the new city. The cacophony of car horns, chatter, and construction filled her ears, a symphony of sounds she'd never experienced before. As she stepped off the curb, someone bumped into her, nearly knocking her off balance. "You shouldn't be standing on a busy road," the passerby muttered, barely glancing back before hurrying away. Maya's apology trailed off, lost in the din of the city. "Wow, what a way to start life here," she said to herself, shaking her head in amusement. She pulled out her phone and dialled the agent's number, waiting for him to pick up. "Hello?" the agent's voice came through, friendly and welcoming. "Hi, it's Maya. I'm in the city and ready to check out apartments. Where should we meet?" she asked, feeling a thrill of excitement. The agent gave her directions to a nearby café, and Maya hailed a taxi, eager to start her new life. As she rode to the meeting point, she couldn't help but feel a sense of liberation. She was finally taking control of her life, and it felt exhilarating. Maya stepped out of the taxi, paid the driver, and took a deep breath before pushing open the door to the cozy café. She spotted Jerry, the agent, across the room, and his face lit up with a warm smile as he caught her eye. He rose from his seat and waved, and Maya felt a sense of relief wash over her. "Hi, welcome, Maya," Jerry said, his voice friendly and welcoming. "How was your journey?" Maya smiled weakly, still feeling the strain of her trip. "Hi, Jerry. It was stressful, but I'm okay, though," she replied, sinking into the chair he gestured to. Jerry nodded sympathetically. "Please, sit down," he said, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "What would you like to have?" As Jerry asked the question, Maya's stomach growled, reminding her that she hadn't eaten since morning. Her mind had been preoccupied with the thought of moving to a new city, and food had been the last thing on her mind. Maya smiled weakly, still feeling the fatigue of her journey. "Just coffee would be great, thanks," she said, but Jerry's suggestion that she'd have whatever he was having seemed like a better idea. "I'll have whatever you're having," she said, smiling back at him. Jerry chuckled and signalled the waitress over. "We'll have two plates of your famous New York-style cheesecake pancakes, please," he said with a smile. Maya's eyes widened slightly as she realized she was in for a treat. As the waitress walked away, Jerry leaned in and said, "I've got a few places lined up for you to see today. One of them is a lovely apartment in Brooklyn Heights with a stunning view of the Manhattan skyline. Another is a cosy studio in the West Village. We'll see what you think." Maya's eyes lit up with excitement. "That sounds amazing," she said, feeling a sense of anticipation wash over her. She was eager to see the apartments and start her new life in the city. The waitress returned with their order, and Maya's eyes widened at the sight of the fluffy pancakes topped with fresh fruit and whipped cream. Her stomach growled in anticipation as she picked up her fork and took a bite. The sweetness and creaminess exploded in her mouth, and she let out a satisfied sigh. "This is heavenly," she said, smiling
