Here's the next chapter with slow-burning attraction, tension, and emotional conflict. Writing Chapter Two: More Than a Broken Pipe The moment Ethan stepped into the apartment, a stream of water splashed across his boots. "Well," he muttered, looking at the flooded kitchen. "You've certainly kept me busy." Isabella folded her arms, trying to hide the embarrassment on her face. "I watched three online tutorials. They all said the same thing." "And?" "They all made it look easy." Ethan crouched beside the sink, suppressing a smile. "So... what exactly did you do?" "I turned off the water." "Good." "Then I hit the pipe with a frying pan." Ethan slowly looked up. "You... what?" "It worked for five seconds." He couldn't stop himself so he laughed. Not the polite laugh he used at charity galas or board meetings. A genuine, uncontrollable laugh. Isabella frowned. "Are you making fun of me?" "I'm trying not to." She picked up the same frying pan and pointed it at him. "I can make your day worse." He raised both hands in surrender, still laughing. "Okay, okay. I'll fix it." For the next thirty minutes, the apartment was filled with the sounds of clanking tools and quiet conversation. "So," Isabella asked, leaning against the counter, "how long have you been a plumber?" Ethan hesitated. "A while." "You don't talk much." "I usually let the pipes do the talking." She rolled her eyes. "That was a terrible line." "I know." With much seriousness She smiled despite herself. He noticed. And for a brief second, he forgot what he was doing. She wasn't wearing expensive clothes or designer jewelry. Her apartment was small, the furniture mismatched, and half the walls were covered with unfinished paintings. Yet somehow... She made the room feel warmer than any mansion he had ever owned. "You're staring," Isabella said. Ethan quickly looked back at the pipes. "I'm checking the water pressure." She narrowed her eyes. "From my face?" "I..." he cleared his throat. "It was a quick inspection." She laughed softly. He smiled again. Dangerous, he thought. Very dangerous. An hour later, the leak was gone. Ethan packed his toolbox. "You're all set." "How much do I owe you?" He quoted the normal service fee. She opened her purse. Empty. Her smile faded. "Oh." Ethan immediately understood. "I can come back another day." "No." She shook her head firmly. "I don't like owing people." "You don't have to—" "I do." She disappeared into another room and returned with a neatly wrapped canvas. "I painted this." He stared at it. It was breathtaking. A quiet sunset over a lonely lake. The colors carried an emotion he couldn't explain. "I sell these sometimes," she said quietly. "Not for much, but... maybe you could take this until I pay you." He blinked. "This is worth far more than fixing a pipe." She shrugged. "It doesn't feel that way." For the first time in years... Someone had offered him something valuable without knowing who he was. His chest tightened. "I'll accept it." Her shoulders relaxed. "Thank you." He gathered his tool box and turned to leave, she spoke again. "Hey... Ethan?" He looked back. "Thanks for not making me feel stupid." He smiled. "You made that impossible the moment you attacked plumbing with a frying pan." She threw a dish towel at him playfully. He caught it effortlessly. And both of them laughed. Neither noticed how long they held each other's gaze afterward. Until the silence became impossible to ignore. Isabella looked away first. "So... goodbye then." "For now," Ethan replied before he could stop himself. The words hung in the air. For now. He walked out before he could say anything else. Outside the building, a sleek black luxury sedan waited across the street. His head of security stepped out. "Sir, the board meeting starts in twenty minutes." Ethan looked back at the apartment window. Through the curtain, he caught a glimpse of Isabella watching him leave. She quickly stepped away when she realized he'd seen her. A smile tugged at his lips. How adorable she looked from down here. "What are you smiling about, sir?" the guard asked. Ethan climbed into the car. "I think," he said quietly, "I just met someone who looked at me... and saw only a plumber." Across the street, Isabella rested her forehead against the window. Why couldn't she stop thinking about his smile? "It's just a plumber," she whispered to herself. "So why does my heart keep racing? Why can't I keep the image of his smiling face from my head or even the sound of his laughter from my memory?" Isabella shook her head slightly to clear the image from her head as she head for the kitchen to try and clear up the mess that the water had made.
