Last Sunset of Summer
Let the countdown begin!
Only 2 more weeks and off I go. A whole new world to explore new friends a new state.
Looking out my window the stars seemed a bit brighter than normal the glow of the full moon lit up the street outside my window.
'Don't worry' I reassured my best friend Stella as she jumped on my lap 'you're coming with me'
Her gentle purring was all I needed to hear as I sat there watching the moon shine. Full moons have always been my favourite, I can never sleep on nights like this.
As the moon faded away and the sun reared its ugly head my 'moon buzz', as I liked to call it, disappeared. Time to get ready again I guess. I brushed my basic brown hair, tomorrow is my 18th birthday, believe me I can not wait. One step closer to college.
My dark blue eyes scoured my room for my bag, I could hear my mother and brother getting up for work already. I had to leave soon, my summer job had taken up all of my time. Every cent I make straight in to saving for college.
Fumbling downstairs I make it out the door just on time to catch my bus.
When I get to my menial job at the minimart Joel had already opened the shop. I'm sure I wasn't late.
'Hey! Aurora'
Joel's voice echoed across the shop floor.
'Looking forward to your birthday tomorrow?'
I wasn't really but what could I say. He is the closest thing I had to a best friend, that wasn't covered in fur.
Girls would flock to the shop just to see him when he was on shift. He was the captain of the football team in high school his green eyes so bright they could see in to your soul. Hair just long enough to want to run your fingers through it and his body? Well, if his body wasn't a good enough reason to make the girls come running his smile could melt the coldest hearts.
'Yeah. Plus there is an awesome blood moon tonight!'
I replied. A beautiful blood moon on my 18th birthday! I was more excited about that if I'm completely honest.
'You and the moon I will never understand' Joel snickered
As the day passed on our 5pm finishing time closed in.
'Still no Lauren?' I asked
'Not yet, I'll give Martin a call'
Martin was our boss, a slightly overweight man in his late 50s. Football crazy and loved his car more than his wife. From the look on Joel's face it wasn't good news.
'she's not coming is she?' Lauren was becoming infamously known as unreliable at work.
'No, and he's asked for one of us to stay, I don't mind staying. It is your birthday tomorrow after all.'
'No it's okay. I'll stay, you have a game tomorrow any way.'
Before I had even finished my sentence, Joel thanked me and headed for the door. I couldn't blame him. It was going to be a long night.
