CHAPTER ELEVEN
The tension in the air was palpable as the team relocated to a new safe house on the outskirts of the city. Dominion agents were undoubtedly tracking their every move now, and the betrayal by Jax had only deepened the cracks in their trust.
The new base was smaller and more secluded, hidden beneath an abandoned factory. Kael’s resistance had gone into full lockdown, preparing for what they all feared would be an inevitable confrontation with the Dominion.

Mistrust in the Ranks
“We shouldn’t have trusted Jax,” Erydan said, pacing back and forth in the central room. His voice was sharp, cutting through the silence.
“And yet you did,” Lira shot back, her irritation evident. “We all did. No point beating yourself up now.”
“Enough,” Kael said, his voice calm but firm. “We can’t afford to turn on each other. The Dominion thrives on division. Don’t give them the satisfaction.”
Noxana sat quietly in the corner, her mind replaying the events of the mission. Her discovery of her family’s involvement in Project Obsidian had left her shaken, and Jax’s betrayal only added to her sense of disorientation.
Erydan noticed her silence and approached, his voice softening. “What’s on your mind?”
She hesitated before answering. “The files I saw in the facility... they mentioned my family. My parents were part of this—part of Project Obsidian.”
Erydan frowned. “Are you sure?”
She nodded. “I don’t know the full extent, but it’s clear they weren’t just victims. They were involved in the research, maybe even willingly.”
Erydan placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “Whatever their choices, they don’t define you. You’re fighting to undo their mistakes, and that’s what matters.”

Ambushed
The team was on edge as they planned their next move. Rhys had pinpointed a location where Dominion forces were coordinating their retaliation, a nearby warehouse rumored to house critical supplies and personnel.
“This could be a chance to hit them where it hurts,” Rhys said, his fingers flying across his keyboard. “But we’ll have to act fast. They’ll expect us to stay hidden after what happened at the facility.”
The group geared up and set out under the cover of night. As they approached the warehouse, the streets were eerily quiet, the only sounds coming from distant sirens and the occasional hum of a patrol drone.
Noxana’s instincts screamed at her as they entered the building. The air felt too still, the shadows too deep.
“It’s a trap,” she whispered, but it was too late.
The doors slammed shut behind them, and floodlights illuminated the warehouse. Dominion agents surrounded them, weapons drawn.
“Well, well,” a cold, familiar voice said. Seraphine stepped forward, her lips curling into a cruel smile. “You’ve been quite the thorn in my side.”
Erydan raised his weapon, his jaw tightening. “Seraphine.”
“Always so dramatic,” she said, tilting her head. “Did you really think you could outmaneuver the Dominion? We’ve been ten steps ahead of you from the start.”
Noxana’s blood boiled as she stepped forward. “You’re just another cog in a corrupt machine. You can’t stop us.”
Seraphine chuckled. “Oh, my dear, I don’t need to stop you. I just need to show you that resistance is futile.” She gestured to the agents. “Take them.”
---
Fierce Firefight
Erydan didn’t wait for the agents to move. He fired the first shot, and chaos erupted. The team scattered, taking cover behind crates and machinery as bullets and energy blasts filled the air.
Lira hacked into the warehouse’s systems, creating distractions by overloading lights and machinery. “I’ll buy us some time,” she shouted over the din.
Kael fought alongside them, his leadership and skill evident as he coordinated their counterattack. “We need to push through! There’s an exit on the east side!”
Noxana found herself face-to-face with a Dominion agent, their blades clashing in a deadly dance. Her training took over, and she disarmed him with a swift strike, leaving him unconscious.
Erydan covered her, taking down two more agents. “You good?”
“Yeah,” she said, panting.
---
A Narrow Escape
As the team fought their way to the exit, Jax reappeared, blocking their path.
“Going somewhere?” he sneered, his weapon trained on them.
Erydan’s eyes narrowed. “You’ve got a lot of nerve showing your face again.”
Jax shrugged. “Orders are orders. You didn’t really think I’d let you walk away, did you?”
Before he could pull the trigger, Noxana threw a blade, striking his weapon and knocking it from his hand.
“Move!” she shouted, and the team surged forward.
Jax scrambled to recover his weapon, but Lira activated a nearby forklift, pinning him against a wall. “Looks like your orders just got canceled,” she said, smirking.
---
A Devastating Blow
The team made it out of the warehouse, but the cost was high. Kael had taken a hit during the fight, his wound bleeding heavily.
“Get him back to the base,” Erydan said, his tone urgent. “We can’t lose him.”
Noxana helped Kael into the transport, her mind racing. The ambush had been a harsh reminder of how dangerous their mission was.
As they sped away, Seraphine’s words echoed in her mind: *We’ve been ten steps ahead of you.*
The Dominion wasn’t just fighting to maintain control—they were playing a calculated game, and the resistance was struggling to keep up.
