CHAPTER 12

CHAPTER TWELVE The safe house was in chaos. Kael was stabilized in the med bay, but the team was shaken to its core. The ambush at the warehouse had left scars deeper than any physical injury. Noxana leaned against the wall, her head in her hands, trying to process the betrayal, the ambush, and the overwhelming weight of their mission. --- Mistrust Brews “He sold us out,” Erydan growled, pacing the room. “Jax played us from the start.” “Obviously,” Lira snapped, her fingers flying over her tablet as she reviewed the security footage from the warehouse. “But the real question is why we didn’t see it coming.” “I vouched for him,” Kael said weakly from his makeshift cot, his voice strained but resolute. “That mistake is on me.” “This isn’t about blame,” Noxana interjected, her voice sharper than she intended. “It’s about figuring out how to survive the next move.” Erydan turned to her, his eyes blazing. “Survive? We’re barely hanging on, Noxana. Jax knew everything about us—our plans, our safe houses. The Dominion could be at our door any second.” “Then we move,” Rhys said, his voice calm despite the tension. “I’ve already wiped our traces here and set up a new location. But we need to act fast.” --- A Hard Choice As they packed their supplies, Rhys pulled Noxana aside. “There’s something else,” he said, lowering his voice. “The Dominion isn’t just targeting us anymore. They’re retaliating on a larger scale—civilians, resistance cells, even suspected allies.” Her stomach churned. “They’re making an example out of us.” He nodded grimly. “If we don’t strike back soon, the resistance might crumble. But going on the offensive now... it’s risky. We could lose everything.” Noxana clenched her fists. “We’ve already lost too much. We can’t let them win.” --- The Public Awakens Despite the looming threat, Rhys took a calculated risk. He leaked a portion of the data from the hard drive to the public: documentation of Project Obsidian’s human trafficking operations and illegal experiments. The response was immediate. Protests erupted in major cities, with citizens taking to the streets demanding accountability. Dominion propaganda networks scrambled to control the narrative, labeling the leaks as “fabricated terrorist propaganda.” But the resistance knew the truth was spreading. “It’s a start,” Lira said, watching the live footage of protests on a hacked Dominion feed. “People are waking up.” “But it’s not enough,” Noxana replied. “We need to hit them harder.” --- Framed as Terrorists The next day, the Dominion struck back. News broadcasts across the region painted Noxana and Erydan as the leaders of a violent terrorist organization. Their faces were plastered on every screen, accompanied by doctored footage of explosions and attacks attributed to them. “They’re turning the public against us,” Erydan said, his jaw clenched. “It’s more than that,” Rhys added. “They’ve placed a massive bounty on both of you. Every bounty hunter and mercenary in the region will be coming after you now.” Noxana felt a wave of dread. “They want to isolate us, make us too dangerous to ally with.” Kael, still recovering but sitting upright now, spoke with authority. “Then we need to push back harder. They’ve declared war on us—we need to show them we’re not afraid.” --- A Ghost from the Past That night, as the team strategized their next move, Noxana found herself unable to sleep. Her mind was a storm of doubt and fear. She sat in the dimly lit common room, staring at the blade in her hand—the one she had thrown to disarm Jax. “You’re more like them than you think.” The voice startled her, and she turned to see Seraphine standing in the shadows, her expression mocking. “This isn’t real,” Noxana whispered, gripping the blade tighter. “You’re not here.” “Am I not?” Seraphine stepped closer, her voice smooth and venomous. “You can fight it all you want, but deep down, you know the truth. Your parents were part of this—part of us. Their blood runs through your veins.” Noxana’s jaw tightened. “I’m nothing like them. Or you.” Seraphine smirked. “Keep telling yourself that. But when the time comes, you’ll see the truth. You can’t escape what you are.” With that, Seraphine vanished, leaving Noxana alone in the flickering light. --- The Next Move The following morning, Noxana pushed the encounter out of her mind. She couldn’t afford to let doubt distract her. The team gathered around Rhys’s workstation as he presented their options. “There’s one more piece of evidence on the hard drive,” Rhys said. “A location. It’s the Dominion’s main headquarters—the heart of their operations. If we can get there, we can destroy their backup servers and cripple Project Obsidian for good.” “It’s a suicide mission,” Erydan said bluntly. Kael shook his head. “It’s our only chance. If we don’t stop them now, they’ll regroup and strike back even harder.” Noxana looked at the team, her resolve hardening. “We’ve come this far. We finish this.” — END OF CHAPTER 12 —
