Chapter 1
The k********g
Another late-night customer was indicated by the jingling bell over the diner's door. I let out a sigh as I cleaned the counter for the seventh time that night. That was my life, normal, predictable, and painfully uneventful, but it had been a long shift. My second job was at the diner. I barely made enough money to get by between this and the laundry service.
I was interrupted by an elderly man who asked, "Two coffees, please."
I smiled at him, trying not to show how tired I was. "Coming up right now."
My phone buzzed in the pocket of my apron as I poured the coffee. My heart skipped a beat when Sophia's name appeared on the screen. It had been years since my sister had called.
Despite my hesitation, I picked up. "Sophia? Is everything in order?
Her tone was piercing, almost desperate. Listen to me, Helen. You must use caution. Things are taking place.
"What things?" I frowned as I asked. "What's going on, Sophia?
She growled, "I don't have time to explain." "Just have faith in me. Avoid staying out too late, an
With a knot of dread in my stomach, I gazed at the phone. What was she discussing? Even though Sophia had always been dramatic, this felt urgent. I pushed the uneasiness away. She wasn't exactly trustworthy.
"Miss? "The coffee?" inquired the old man.
I jolted back to the present. I apologize for it. Here you go.
I picked up my coat and went outside into the cold night when my shift was finally over. The streetlights' faint glimmer did little to calm the rising uneasiness in my chest, and the streets were abnormally quiet.
My heart raced when I heard footsteps behind me. I looked back, but there was nobody there. "Henry, please get a grip," I whispered to myself.
Abruptly, a van screamed to a stop next to me. Three masked men burst out before I could respond.
"Hey! Give me up! One of them grabbed me by the arm and I yelled.
With an iron grip, one of them snarled, "You owe us, little lady."
"Are you owed? I have no idea who you are! I thrashed to get away but to no avail.
A sickening sweet smell filled my nostrils as a handkerchief was pushed against my face. I was completely engulfed by darkness.
My head ached when I woke up. I was in a dark room, shackled to a chair. Smoke and the subtle smell of gasoline filled the air.
"At last awake, huh?" A strong voice broke the mist.
When I looked up, I saw a man with sharp green eyes and slicked-back hair. Despite his formidable behaviour, he exuded a cruel charm.
"Who are you? What are you looking for from me? With a trembling voice, I demanded.
With a sneer on his lips, the man leaned closer. "My name is Dante Rosetti. I have a very significant debt to your father. You're going to assist me with getting it back now.
"My dad?" My heart fell. "I have no idea where he is!"
Dante's expression darkened as he snapped, "Don't play dumb." "The ledger." "Where is it?"
"I don't understand what you're discussing!" Panic rising in my chest, I insisted.
Dante didn't appear to accept my story. He exhaled softly after lighting a cigarette. "You must remember until tomorrow. Let's just say you'll regret it if you don't.
Dante's warnings were cut short by the sound of slamming doors. Around me, panic broke out as gunshots rang out.
"What?" Dante grabbed his revolver and yelled.
With their firearms aimed at Dante and his men, guys in black suits poured into the room.
A towering figure walked in with an air of authority amid the chaos. Before turning to Dante, his gorgeous brown eyes briefly met mine.
The man said, "Dante," in a cool but firm voice. "This is my territory. A huge error.
"Raymond James," spit out Dante. "This is not your concern."
"It is right now," Raymond said calmly.
As the two men squared off, the tension in the room was palpable. I couldn't help but observe Raymond's composure despite the danger.
Raymond nodded toward me and told one of his men, "Take her."
"Hold on, what? No! As someone freed me, I objected. "I have no idea who you are!"
Raymond gave me a sharp look as he looked. "You don't have to. You're safer with me than with him, so know that.
I was being brought out of the hiding place before I could protest. Dante's irate face as Raymond's guys subdued him was the last thing I saw.
Aside from the buzz of the motor, Raymond's sleek black automobile was a quiet ride. To comprehend what had just transpired, I gazed out the window.
"Will you explain what's happening to me?" I broke the silence by asking at last.
Raymond avoided eye contact with me. "Your dad had enemies." risky ones. Dante will not give up until he achieves his goals.
"And what is it that he wants?"
Raymond responded simply, "A ledger." "It has information that could ruin me and men like him."
I took a deep breath. "I do not know ledgers. It has been years since I last saw my father.
Raymond's unreadable eyes moved to me. "That may be the case, but Dante seems unconcerned. He believes that you are the key to obtaining it.
"What comes next?"
"Now," he continued firmly, "you remain with me." I can't afford to let you run around unguarded, and Dante won't stop.
"Are you staying with me?" Incredulously, I asked. "Why should I have faith in you?"
"You have no other option," he answered.
The vehicle arrived at a vast mansion with armed guards and tall walls. I couldn't get rid of the thought that I had exchanged one jail for another as I left.
Raymond turned to me inside, his face grave. Helen, you must comprehend something. This isn't a game. You will pay attention to me if you wish to live. Do you get it?
A phone rang before I could answer. As he listened, Raymond's expression darkened in response.
Grimly, he remarked, "Dante is already preparing his next move." "And he has stated clearly that he will not give up until he has you."
I felt sick to my st
omach.
Dante’s voice echoed faintly through the phone. “She’s the key, Raymond. You can’t protect her forever.”
