Chapter 2: Pregnant?

Amelia's words resounded in Whitney’s ears. “Why would you say that mama?” Whitney tried to dismiss the thought and change the topic. “I’m just saying, girl. It better not be what I’m thinking.” “Stop saying that mama. You are making me scared.” “Am I? Or you’re just too scared to look in that direction? I’ve been in this world long before you girl, so I can know something when I see it.” Whitney sat there quietly not knowing what to say again. “I feel sleepy mama. I need to go to bed.” “I was about to say the same. We’ll talk about this tomorrow.” The night seemed long for Whitney as she lay on the bed staring at nothing. Her mind was preoccupied with what her grandma said. What if she was correct? How would she raise the kid now that she’s no longer with her husband? Those were the thoughts that endlessly ran through her mind that night. Finally, it was morning and she sneaked out before Amelia could wake up. She headed to a*****e to get a pregnancy strip. If truly she was pregnant, she wanted to know early. “So, where are you coming from this early.” Amelia attacked, her eyes gazing at the door. “Ha…you made me scared mama,” Whitney responded with her hand on her chest. “I came to wake you up not too long ago but didn’t find you in bed.” “Yeah, I couldn’t sleep all through the night so I decided to take a walk when it was dawn.” She lied. “Okay, if you say so. I’m about to make breakfast, would you join me?” “Alright. Give me a minute, I’d be right behind you.” Whitney responded hurrying to her in the bathroom to take the test. Her heart raced with conflicting emotions as she awaited the result of the test. A part of her longed to experience the joy of motherhood while the other half felt the time was just not right. “I can’t find you here yet, Whitney,” Amelia called out after about 20 minutes. “I’m right here,” Whitney responded already heading to join her grandmother in the kitchen. “What’s that look on your face? Are you okay?” Amelia tried to analyze her face. “Yeah, sure. I’m fine.” “I know you, girl. You don’t seem fine.” Whitney took a deep breath before talking. “I’m pregnant, mama.” “I told you, didn’t I?” Amelia said with a smiley face. “Wait, you knew all these while and you were pretending?” “I lied. I didn’t go out to take a walk. I was worried when you brought it up, so I went out to get a test strip and it came positive.” “And you are not happy about it?” “Happy? How can I be happy about it mama, when his father isn’t here? Would I be a single parent? I can’t do this alone.” Whitney said burying her face between both hands. Amelia took a step closer. “I understand how you feel about it dear. That’s why I’m here. You are not alone, okay?” ****** “Hurry, you might be late for your appointment.” “I’m coming, mama. I’m almost done.” Whitney was scheduled for an ultrasound scan at the hospital. She was curious to know if she was carrying a boy or a girl. “Aah, you’re welcome Madam Amelia. It's good to see you again.” The doctor said as she welcomed Whitney and her grandma to his office. “You two know each other?” Whitney questioned with a puzzled face, facing her grandma. “Doctor Brit was there with me when I gave birth to your mother. That was a long time ago. I’m surprised she hasn’t retired.” “Hahaha. How time flies. Please have your seat. Is this your granddaughter? The one for the ultrasound scan?” “Oh yes.” “Wow! Congratulations to both of you. So, shall we proceed with the examination?” “Yeah. Sure, we can.” “Alright. This way, please.” Doctor Brit said leading Whitney out to the examination room where the scans and tests were to take place. A few hours later, the scan was concluded and the results were ready. "Here are the results of the scan, ma'am," the doctor said passing a folder to Amelia and her granddaughter in his office. "And from the tests, you're most likely expecting a male child. Congratulations." "Really?" Amelia responded with her eyes wide open as she picked the report. "That's great news. Thank you doc." ****** Ding-dong…the sound of the doorbell announced. "Mama, are you expecting someone?" Whitney asked. "I don't know. Go see who it is." Whitney opened the door and saw a man nicely dressed in a suit and tie, about to hit the doorbell again. “Hi, can I help you?” "Yeah, I'm an attorney from The Decagon Services. Are you by any chance, Whitney? Whitney Keen..." " Right….That's right. Is there a problem? What can I do for you?" "Erh, not really. Can I come in?" "Sure." "I've been authorized to get your signatures on this document." The attorney said handing over a folder." "A document? What for?" "Details are on it. Please go through." Whitney took a minute to read the document before responding. "This seems to be a property deed and I don't think this is for me. I think you're making a mistake." "Your name is right there ma'am." "Yeah, I can see it but maybe it's for another Whitney Keen elsewhere, probably not me". Whitney tried to hand it back to the attorney. "Take it, Whitney. It isn't a mistake. It's yours." Amelia, her grandma spoke from a corner of the room. "Me? What do you mean, mama? You know about this?" Amelia took a deep sigh. "That's the property your mom asked me to give you before she passed on." "My mom? She had this kind of property? But why wait so long? Why didn't you give me when she....when she passed away?" Whitney questioned, trying to take in the event. "She wanted to give you after you had your first child. But I really don't know how much time I have left on my side before I leave too."
