16 Ginny saw the glare of lights, and a truck came slowly down the road. Hendrik waved at the driver, and the vehicle stopped. The man opened his window. “Are you folks all right?” he asked them. He appeared to be some kind of a farmer. “Actually, we could use a ride,” Hendrik replied. The man seemed to be thinking for a moment. “Sure, get in.” There were no seats in the back, so they had to sit in front with the driver. Hendrik sat next to the man, and Ginny sat on the other side of Hendrik. Hendrik gave him the name of the place and the address, and for a while, the man didn’t say much as he drove. Inside, the truck smelled of tobacco. Then he said, “I own a farm outside of the village. Did your vehicle break down a ways back?” he asked them. “We came from the train, actually,” G
