It began as a deal! it became everything!

When newly minted nurse Marie Allen agrees to a one-year marriage with mysterious heir Alex Whitaker to fund her sister’s life-saving treatment, she swears it’s only business. Moving into Alex’s world of cameras, contracts, and carefully curated appearances, Marie begins to see the man behind the money, and to feel what the contract forbids.

However, Alex carries a history that refuses to remain hidden. His longtime love, Katherine, was always the plan after the annulment until Marie came into the picture. When Marie accidentally learns the reality, the fragile trust shatters. She walks away with divorce papers signed and a heart she never meant to risk.

Now Alex must choose: the future he mapped out with Katherine, or the life he never expected with Marie. To win her back, he must defy the rules, confront his family, and show that this time, there are no strings attached, only love.

She signed for her sister’s life… not for his love.

Chapter 1: New Beginnings
The city began to awaken under a gentle golden sunrise, light pouring between glass skyscrapers and reflecting off the damp pavement from the previous night’s rain. Through her small apartment window, Marie Allen admired the view for just a moment before turning back to the ironing board. Her crisp white scrubs lay flat under her fingertips, the faint aroma of lavender starch rising with the steam. Today was meant to mark an important milestone; her first day as a nurse extern at Robert Frasier Hospital, the culmination of four years filled with late-night studying, countless clinicals, and double shifts as a waitress. Yet, her heart felt too heavy to celebrate. She smoothed the fabric, but her hands shook. As always, her thoughts wandered to her younger sister. The buzz of her phone broke the stillness. She didn’t need to check the screen to recognize it was Dr. Leigh, the pediatric hematologist who had been caring for Martha for nearly a year. “Marie,” Dr. Leigh’s voice was gentle but tinged with urgency, “it’s about Martha. Her hemoglobin levels have dropped alarmingly. We can’t wait any longer. The bone marrow transplant we talked about… it’s now critical.” Marie felt the tightness in her chest. “How soon?” “As quickly as we can find a donor match. And…” The pause indicated the next part would be painful. “…the costs have gone up. Forty-five thousand upfront. Post-surgery care will be additional.” Her legs almost gave way beneath her. She clutched the kitchen counter, staring at the floor tiles as if they might provide some answers. “Okay,” she murmured, forcing steadiness into her voice. “I’ll… figure something out.” After hanging up, she put her phone away and took a deep breath that didn’t quite fill her lungs. She had no idea how she would manage it, but she had to. The hospital lobby smelled faintly of coffee and antiseptic — an odd blend that would soon become familiar. Nurses in pale blue scrubs hurried past, pushing carts and calling to one another. A laminated ID badge now hung from her neck, announcing her as Marie Allen – Nurse Extern. “Marie Allen?” A brisk woman with a clipboard appeared at her side. “I’m Nurse Supervisor McKenna. You’ll be covering Ward C. Four patients. One of them is… let’s call him our ‘special’ case. Mr. Whitaker. Diabetic. Stubborn as a mule. He’s been here longer than some staff members and likes to think he runs the place.” Marie nodded politely. I can handle difficult. Or so she thought. Mr. Whitaker's room was poorly lit, with the blinds closed. The man in the bed had sparse silver hair and a frown that could slice through glass. “You’re not Maggie,” he said gruffly. “Maggie’s off today. I’m Marie, and I’ll be—” “If you’re my nurse, you can start by bringing me a Snickers bar.” She stared in surprise. “Sir, I’m concerned your sugar levels—” “I don’t care about charts or doctors! I want a candy bar.” When she gently declined, his face contorted with rage. In the next instant, his breakfast tray flew across the room, coffee splattering onto the wall. “Get out!” he bellowed. Marie felt her heart race as orderlies came rushing in. She retreated into the hall, her cheeks burning with humiliation, only to encounter Supervisor McKenna’s lips pressed into a tight line. “Not even an hour into your shift,” she said, “and you’ve already upset one of our biggest donors.” Marie swallowed nervously. Her first day wasn’t even finished, and she could already sense the ground shifting beneath her, the same kind of upheaval that could ruin everything she had been working to achieve.
