The card burns a hole in my hand the entire ride home. Not literally—of course—but it might as well have since I have been clutching it like a lifeline ever since Vanessa walked out of my office. This is it. The one thing that could connect me with my son if I do what Vanessa wants me to do. My chest tightens with something so dangerously close to hope, but I can’t let myself feel that way yet. Not completely. I heave a sigh as Dave drives through the Sterling estate gates. “Did he tell you where he was going, Dave?” I ask him, forcing a tight smile when he looks at me through the rearview mirror.
