The girl who sang to the moon
The village of Silverbrook rested quietly beneath the glow of a full moon. By day it looked like any other village, with cobblestone paths, wooden cottages, and fields of wildflowers stretching toward the forest. But at night, it became something magical. Tiny blue fireflies floated through the air, silver lilies opened their petals, and the lake reflected the moon so perfectly that it seemed like another sky. The villagers believed the moon blessed Silverbrook. Every full moon, they gathered at Moon Lake to sing songs that had been passed down for generations. No one remembered who had written them, only that they were older than the kingdom itself. Seventeen year old Lyra stood among them, her long dark hair swaying in the cool breeze. She didn't enjoy standing in crowds, but her grandmother insisted she sing every month. "The moon listens to your voice," her grandmother often said with a smile. Lyra always laughed it off. "It's just a song, Grandma." But every time Lyra sang, something strange happened. The lake shimmered. The wind became still and the moon seemed to glow just a little brighter. The villagers whispered that she had been blessed. Lyra thought they were simply imagining things. When the ceremony ended, everyone returned home, but Lyra wasn't ready to sleep. She loved the silence of the forest at night. Ignoring her grandmother's warning, she grabbed a lantern and slipped beyond the village gates. The Forbidden Forest stretched endlessly before her. Ancient trees towered overhead, their silver leaves sparkling under the moonlight. The deeper she walked, the quieter the world became. Then she saw it. A light. Not the warm glow of a lantern, but a pale silver light pulsing between the trees. Curiosity tugged at her. She followed it until the trees opened into a forgotten clearing. There stood an enormous temple carved entirely from white stone. Vines wrapped around broken pillars, and glowing flowers grew from cracks in the floor. She had heard stories about this place. The Temple of Selene. No one had entered it for centuries. "They say the gods abandoned it," Lyra whispered. She climbed the worn stone steps and pushed open the heavy doors. They groaned loudly before revealing a vast chamber lit by moonlight pouring through a shattered ceiling. At the center stood a crystal altar. It was beautiful. Inside the crystal, silver light swirled like liquid stars. Lyra stepped closer. "I shouldn't be here..." She knew she should leave. Instead, she reached out. The instant her fingers touched the crystal— BOOM! A wave of brilliant silver light burst through the temple. The floor trembled beneath her feet. Outside, a pillar of light shot into the heavens, piercing the Blood Moon that had just begun to rise. Across the world, kings looked toward the sky. Witches stopped their spells. Dragons stirred in forgotten mountains. Even creatures that had slept for centuries opened their glowing eyes. Something ancient had awakened. Back inside the temple, Lyra fell to the ground. Her wrist burned. She gasped as a glowing crescent moon surrounded by tiny stars slowly appeared on her skin. "What... is this?" A voice echoed through the chamber. Soft. Ancient. Powerful. "The Moonborn has returned." Lyra spun around. "Who's there?" Silence. Then— A deafening roar shook the forest. Dust rained from the ceiling. Another roar answered. Then another. The monsters sleeping beneath the forest had awakened. Fear gripped her chest. She sprinted toward the temple entrance as the ground cracked beneath her feet. Outside, the peaceful forest had transformed. Shadowy creatures with glowing red eyes emerged from the darkness. Their growls echoed through the trees. Lyra's heart pounded. She ran as fast as she could, branches whipping against her face while the monsters chased her through the moonlit woods. Behind her, the ancient Temple of Selene continued to glow, its light visible for miles. Far away, in a castle built from black stone, a young prince stepped onto a balcony overlooking the Shadow Kingdom. His silver eyes narrowed as he watched the beam of light rise into the sky. "So..." he murmured. "It has finally begun." Far below, the royal seer knelt before him. "The Moonborn has awakened, Your Highness." Prince Kael's expression hardened. "Prepare my horse." Without another word, he turned and disappeared into the castle. Lyra ran as though the forest itself had turned against her. Branches clawed at her sleeves, thorny vines wrapped around her ankles, and roots rose from the earth like bony fingers trying to trip her. Behind her, the creatures crashed through the undergrowth with terrifying speed. Their snarls echoed between the ancient trees, growing louder with every heartbeat. She dared a glance over her shoulder. At least six of them were chasing her. They looked nothing like the wolves that sometimes wandered near Silverbrook. These beasts were larger than horses, with bodies cloaked in black mist and eyes that glowed a furious crimson. Their jagged teeth gleamed in the moonlight, and every breath they released carried a trail of shadow. "What are you?" Lyra whispered, panic tightening her chest. One of the creatures leaped. She ducked instinctively, feeling its claws tear through the hood of her cloak instead of her skin. The beast landed in front of her with a heavy thud, blocking the narrow path. Lyra stumbled to a halt. Another growl came from behind. She was trapped. The creatures circled her slowly, their glowing eyes fixed on the silver mark that burned on her wrist. Instead of attacking, they seemed... hesitant. As if they recognized it. The crescent-shaped mark pulsed beneath her skin, sending warmth through her arm. The strange sensation spread across her body until it settled in her chest like a second heartbeat. The monsters lowered their heads. For one brief moment, the forest became eerily silent. Then the largest beast let out a deafening roar. The others charged. Lyra threw her hands over her face. A blinding flash erupted from the mark on her wrist. Silver light exploded outward in every direction. The creatures cried out as though burned. They were hurled backward, crashing into trees and disappearing into the darkness. The wave of light raced through the forest, making every silver leaf shimmer before fading as quickly as it had appeared. Lyra stared at her glowing hand in disbelief. "I... I did that?" The mark dimmed, leaving only a faint silver outline on her skin. Before she could gather her thoughts, another sound drifted through the trees. Hoofbeats. Fast. Several riders were approaching. Fear gripped her once more. Were they hunters? Soldiers? More enemies? She darted behind the thick trunk of an ancient oak and held her breath. Moments later, a group of riders emerged into the clearing where the beasts had vanished. They wore dark cloaks embroidered with a silver wolf's head, and each carried a sword that reflected the moonlight. Their horses snorted nervously, refusing to move farther. The rider at the front dismounted. He was an older man with a weathered face and a scar running across his left cheek. Kneeling beside the scorched earth, he touched the ground where the silver light had struck. "It can't be..." he murmured. One of the younger riders approached him. "Captain Rowan, what happened here?" Rowan lifted his hand. Tiny silver sparks clung to his fingertips before fading into the night. "The ancient magic has returned." The younger man's face paled. "You mean... the stories are true?" Rowan slowly stood, his eyes scanning the surrounding forest. "If the Moonborn has awakened, every kingdom will know by sunrise." He looked toward the distant silhouette of the Temple of Selene, where the faint pillar of silver light still lingered in the sky. "And if our enemies find her first..." He didn't finish the sentence. He didn't need to. The silence among the riders said enough. Hidden behind the oak tree, Lyra pressed a trembling hand over her mouth. Moonborn. The same word she had heard inside the temple. They were talking about her. She wanted to step out and ask them what it meant, why everyone seemed to know something she didn't. But instinct warned her to stay hidden. Without another word, the riders mounted their horses and galloped deeper into the forest, following the fading trail of silver magic. Lyra waited until the sound of hooves disappeared. Only then did she step out from behind the tree. The forest was quiet again, but it no longer felt welcoming. Every rustle of leaves made her flinch. Her grandmother had always warned her never to enter the Forbidden Forest after dark. Now Lyra understood why. She looked once more at the glowing crescent on her wrist. "What are you trying to tell me?" she whispered. The mark gave no answer. But somewhere far beyond the forest, beneath the same Blood Moon, someone else had already begun riding toward Silverbrook. And unlike the monsters... he knew exactly who he was looking for. Lyra hurried through the forest, her heart refusing to slow. The moonlight that had once made the trees seem beautiful now cast eerie shadows that stretched across the path like grasping hands. At last, the familiar wooden gate of Silverbrook came into view. She let out a shaky breath and slipped quietly into the village. Every cottage was dark, their windows glowing faintly with the last embers of dying fireplaces. It seemed as though everyone was asleep, unaware that the world beyond the village had changed forever. She reached her grandmother's cottage and gently pushed the door open. The old woman was waiting. She sat beside the fireplace, a single candle flickering on the table. Though she had no way of knowing where Lyra had gone, there wasn't a trace of surprise on her face. "I told you not to go into the forest," she said softly. Lyra froze. "Grandma..." The older woman stood and walked toward her. Before Lyra could speak, her grandmother's eyes fell to the glowing crescent on her wrist. The color drained from her face. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. Finally, her grandmother reached out with trembling fingers but stopped just before touching the mark. "It has chosen you," she whispered. "You know what this is?" Lyra asked, her voice barely audible. Her grandmother closed her eyes as though gathering the strength to answer. "I prayed this day would never come." "What are you talking about? Everyone keeps saying 'Moonborn.' What does it mean? Why were those monsters chasing me?" The old woman's expression was filled with sorrow. "There are truths I've kept from you all your life. Truths I swore never to reveal unless this moment came." A heavy knock echoed through the cottage. Bang. Bang. Bang. Both of them turned toward the door. Another knock followed, louder this time. Then came a commanding voice from outside. "Open in the name of the Crown!" Lyra's grandmother's eyes widened with fear. "They've found you already." She hurried to a dusty wooden chest in the corner and pulled out a small silver pendant shaped like a crescent moon. She pressed it into Lyra's hand. "Listen to me carefully," she said, gripping Lyra's shoulders. "No matter what happens, protect this pendant. Do not let anyone take it." "But who are they?" Lyra asked. The knocking became pounding. The cottage door shuddered against its hinges. "They are not here to protect you," her grandmother whispered. "They are here to claim you." The wooden door burst open. Cold night air rushed inside as several armored soldiers stormed into the cottage, their swords drawn. Behind them stood a tall figure cloaked in black, his face hidden beneath a hood. He stepped forward, his piercing silver eyes locking onto Lyra. "The Moonborn," he said quietly. "We've finally found you."
