The Final Year

The First Year Mavis' POV I woke up on my 18th birthday, I was so excited about the festivities that I ran straight to the kitchen. “Happy Birthday honey, finally 18!” mum said. “Thanks mum, I’m so happy I finally am an adult!” “You’ve got a long way to go their honey, but I love the eagerness.” Out of nowhere my dad jumped and pulled a party popper screaming, “HAPPY EIGHTEENTH BIRTHDAY”. “DAD! You scared me out of my mind! Thank you!” So just like usual birthdays, we eat cake for breakfast I open my gifts and we all spend the day together. But this was my eighteenth and my parents always said to me, on your eighteenth it will set your path to a new journey. Some expect marriage or even little pups but I expected a great change and adventure. As we are called Septors, this means we will grow with existential powers as we become older. We didn’t need to use our powers as we lived harmoniously, so I didn’t learn with my parents. They felt if we live in a human’s world, then we should behave as such. For me, I really wanted to study my powers and just grow like other species did. Mother forbade I use magic and when you’re a Septor you are obliged to follow your parents’ rules. (as you can imagine magical punishments are torturous). After we ate our cake on my birthday, we were setting off in the car to go on a road trip to Forest Cavern where we go every birthday to embrace our true habitat. Nothing beats being in my favourite place, I even get space to roam so I can practice a few rituals of my own. As I am 18 I am planning to tell my parents I want to go be a Septor somewhere in the wild training and learning, instead of living the life of a boring human. I don’t know how that conversation will go, but I can’t hold in who I am anymore. As I’m thinking of ways to break it to my parents, I just sit on a rock staring at the moon. As I sit there, I look down briefly noticing a circle of light. I crouch down to get a better look, I touch the grass with my fingers where the light circle is. The light starts to move onto my hand, I freak out and just shake it off like it was normal. Start heading back to my parents, when I feel a tingle in my fingers and when I look my hand is completely light. As in glowing in the dark night, I am completely shocked. Maybe it’s my magic starting? But it was a strange thing to happen, so I didn’t bother to mention it to my parents as they forbade use of magic. I put on my gloves get into the tent I set up, more like bodged, and start sleeping. I woke up the next morning to my parents running around quickly gathering our stuff. “Get in the car Mavis, quickly gather your things. We must leave now!” said Dad. “What’s going on? I thought we were going on the walk up to Forest Cavern. I don’t want to go yet!” I said. Ugh, they always ruin things! “No time to explain, listen to your father. There’s no time to argue! Move quickly!” said Mum. I just had no energy to argue and walked to the car, with huge restraint. As we started driving my father was looking up at the sky, he said that there was something heading to earth and he didn’t want to wait to find out if they were good or bad. The radio warned him earlier something had entered our planet's atmosphere but just to return to our homes and remain there. As we drive, we listen to the radio for more updates. I remember thinking this is just a bogus reason to leave early again! My dad’s track record of cutting things short was very long, it's his thing to do. But it was to my surprise that the radio started to flicker, then a warning sound came from it! It was the people in charge of our country. They said, "OUR PLANET IS BEING INVADED, EVACUATE , GET TO SAFETY. THIS IS NOT A DRILL, THEY ARE COMING, NOT FRIENDLY- REPEAT- NOT FRIENDLY. THERE IS NO WAY OUT. " *radio cuts out* That must be a hoax I thought, until the rain of explosions occurred. There were ships all over the sky and everywhere you look there was a fire and people screaming. There were tsunamis and volcanoes erupting. The weather had caused the worst storms I had ever seen, in the first day they took over communications, technology launching nukes and bombs and killing thousands. After the first month all human life forms were terminated. The shake of the earth just made it impossible for them to survive. They wiped out their whole civilization and forced the rest of us into borders based on species. In the First Year, every species was locked in the borders, explosions let out gas and curses to keep us all trapped. There is no way out, we are outnumbered by their species.
