WHEN STARS COLLIDE
Chapter 1: The Worlds Apart The sun had just begun to set over San Cristobal, painting the skies with hues of amber and crimson. The city pulsed with life—street vendors shouted the prices of roasted corn, tricycles honked impatiently as they weaved through traffic, and children darted across the streets barefoot, laughing despite the dust clinging to their skin. For most people, this chaos was an ordinary scene, but for Ethan Cruz, it was his entire world. At nineteen, Ethan already carried the weight of a man twice his age. His father had died years ago in a construction accident, leaving him and his mother with debts that felt like chains around their necks. Since then, he had worked every odd job imaginable—delivering packages, carrying sacks of rice at the market, and fixing anything with his bare hands. His days ended with sore muscles and scraped skin, but never with enough money. Yet despite his circumstances, there was something in Ethan’s eyes that poverty could not steal—a fire, a refusal to surrender. That fire burned brightest whenever he thought of Isabella Monteverde. She was the daughter of Don Alejandro Monteverde, one of the wealthiest businessmen in the city. The Monteverde estate stood like a palace on the hills of San Cristobal, with marble pillars, fountains, and gardens that seemed to belong in another world. Isabella had grown up behind those gilded gates, raised in luxury, educated in the best schools. People whispered her name with envy, as though her life was a fairy tale. But Ethan knew her beyond the glitter. He had met her two years ago by accident, under the shade of the old acacia tree near the edge of her family’s property. She had wandered away from a formal event, frustrated by the suffocating attention of her father’s business associates. Ethan had been resting there, wiping sweat from his brow after a long day of hauling crates. Their eyes had met, and something unspoken passed between them. A poor boy and a rich girl—two worlds colliding under the same sky. Since then, their meetings had become their secret. --- That evening, as Ethan walked toward the acacia tree, he carried nothing but a small notebook in his pocket. He had been teaching himself to write poetry at night, scribbling verses on scraps of paper by candlelight. He wanted to show Isabella—wanted her to see that his heart could create beauty even if his life was drenched in struggle. When he reached the tree, he found her already there. Isabella sat gracefully on the roots, her white dress glowing faintly in the dim light. She looked like a vision, her hair cascading like waves of gold-brown silk over her shoulders. “You’re late,” she said softly, but her smile betrayed her relief. Ethan laughed, scratching the back of his neck. “Work kept me longer today. Old Man Santos’s tricycle broke down again. I had to fix it.” “You and your endless jobs.” She sighed, but her eyes sparkled as she looked at him. “Sometimes I wonder if you’ll ever take a rest.” He sat beside her, pulling out his worn notebook. “One day, Isa. But not now. Rest is for men who already have something. I still have to build mine.” She leaned closer, curiosity dancing in her gaze. “What’s that?” “A poem,” he said shyly, opening the notebook. His rough fingers trembled as he flipped to the page. “I… wrote it for you.” Her lips parted slightly, surprise softening her features. “Read it to me.” His voice was low, unpolished, but sincere as he recited: “Among stars I search for light, Yet in your eyes, the heavens ignite. No palace, no crown, no golden thread— But with your smile, my soul is fed.” Isabella’s eyes glistened. She reached for his hand, her delicate fingers brushing against the calloused skin of his palm. “Ethan… you’ll make me cry.” He chuckled nervously. “Then I’ll write one to make you laugh tomorrow.” Silence lingered between them, filled only by the rustle of leaves and the distant hum of the city. Then, Isabella whispered the words that both warmed and broke his heart. “Promise me we’ll always be together. That you won’t let anything tear us apart.” Ethan looked at her, and for a moment, the world seemed simple. Rich or poor, love was love. He pressed her hand against his chest, where his heart thundered. “I promise, Isa. I’ll fight the world if I have to.” --- But the world was already fighting back. Unbeknownst to them, a pair of cold, calculating eyes had been watching. Don Alejandro Monteverde stood a few feet away, his expensive leather shoes crunching the dry leaves as he emerged from the shadows. His face was carved in anger, his jaw clenched tight. “Isabella.” His voice thundered like a storm. Isabella froze, her hand slipping from Ethan’s as she turned to face her father. Her skin turned pale. “P-Papa—” “Enough!” Don Alejandro’s gaze fell on Ethan like a blade. “How dare you? A filthy boy from the slums dares to touch my daughter?” Ethan stood, his fists clenched at his sides. “With all due respect, sir, I love her. I don’t care about wealth—” “Love?” Don Alejandro’s voice dripped with disdain. “What can your love buy? Can it feed her? Can it clothe her? Can it give her the life she deserves?” Isabella stepped forward, tears pooling in her eyes. “Papa, please! Ethan is kind, he’s hardworking—he has more honor than any of the men you choose for me!” “Silence!” Don Alejandro barked. He signaled, and within moments two of his guards appeared, their towering figures intimidating. “Take this boy away from here. If I ever see him near my daughter again, I will destroy him.” The guards seized Ethan’s arms, but he resisted, glaring at the man who dared to measure his worth in coins. “I may be poor now, Don Alejandro. But remember this night. One day, I’ll come back. Stronger. Richer. And when I do, you’ll regret underestimating me.” Don Alejandro’s lips curled into a cruel smile. “Ambition from a rat. How amusing.” Ethan was dragged away into the darkness, his heart pounding not from fear, but from the vow searing itself into his soul. Isabella cried out, struggling against her father’s grip. “Ethan! Ethan!” But her voice was swallowed by the night. --- That night, Ethan lay on the rooftop of his small, crumbling home, blood trickling from a split lip where one of the guards had struck him. His mother, Elena, tried to tend to his wounds, her hands trembling as she dabbed a cloth on his face. “My son,” she whispered, tears threatening to spill. “Why do you fight battles you cannot win? She’s not for us. Their world will never accept you.” Ethan stared at the stars, his jaw set in defiance. “Maybe not today, Mama. But I swear—I’ll rise. I’ll build something so great that no one can ever look down on me again. And when that day comes, I’ll return for her.” Elena’s heart broke at his words, torn between pride and fear. She saw the determination in her son’s eyes, the same fire that had once burned in her late husband. And she knew—this was only the beginning
