Chapter 1

1030 Words
It was a bright afternoon when my best friend Ellie sent me off shore. The water was calm and the soothing sea breeze caressed my skin. We bid goodbye one last time. I’ll really miss her. But I need to do this. After all, this is my final goal as a Captain. “Always be safe Thal.” She hugged me and I patted her shoulder. The ship’s machine started to make noise as it had been made to life and the whole ship vibrated. Ellie gave me a draw string bag and I questioningly looked at her. “You can use that anytime. I’m giving it to you for free. You know my inventions are costly. Just be successful and it’ll make me happy.” She waved her hand. As I looked at the horizon. I am hopeful for this mission of mine. “Captain, we have looked at the map you gave us. The estimated time of our arrival at the area will be 53 hours.” My first mate Sam told me. “I see. Proceed as planned.” And I walk down the alley going down the cabin. As I entered my room, I looked at the draw sting bag and took out its content. I found blue colored capsules, a battery pack in a seal, chords, a tube and a note. Dearest Thal, Hey! Maybe you just take a look on the precious inventions of mine. Be thankful, your scientist wanna be best friend made all of this. Haha! That blue capsule? It’s what I call G-cap. It’s made of glucose and vitamins plus amino acid combined. Maybe you think it as a food supplement. Well kind of, but much better. A capsule will make you survive a day without getting hungry. That battery pack and chord? Just in case. I know you have electricity but we never know when sirens may capture you. Take a selfie and send it to me. Alright? And that tube. Yeah! You called it a tube right? But it’s a smart survival tool. It has buttons about a size of a grain of sand. It can be used to cut and etcetera. I’m working on a new invention now. Don’t worry, I’m not going to cry over the robot that burst. Take care always and be safe. You know I always love you. Sincerely, Maxine Ellie Krikova Gosh Ellie. As always, she’s an avid fan of mythology. I wonder what she’s doing now. But for now, I need to focus on my plan. I studied the whole map my Dad gave me years ago. He was a seafarer too but he and my Mom died on a car crash when I was high school. But I always got Ellie on my back. I fished my phone out of my pocket only to see it is already 7 o’clock in the evening. Time really flies fast. It’s been three hours since we set off shore. I started to take a warm bath. And got out of my room. “Captain! Good evening.” Random men in my boat greeted me. I set foot on the kitchen and look for sandwiches. I told the cooks not to bring food to my room. I’m not ill. “Hey Captain! Do you mind to stay up later? I need to sleep.” Bill said as he rubbed his eye. Poor him, he needs to be with me in this trip even though he’s still broken hearted. Well, his girl did cheat on him when we were on our island scape last month and it really made him alcoholic. Thankfully, he came back to his senses a week ago. “Sure thing mate. My hands are aching in the touch of the telescope and the wheel.” I chucked as I took a bite on the soft sandwich and take a sip on the coffee. “You okay now?” I asked out of the blue. Breaking the ice around us. “I need to captain. If not, you’ll not have a mate up here.” He smiled faintly. I know it still hurt and it will never heal that fast. After I finished the last chomp, I proceed to the deck. I need to drive and navigate. As I took a step out, the cold sea breeze welcomed me. I can taste the saltiness and crisp of the air in the dark and melancholic night. The only light that beams on up was the light of the full moon. A silent howl of the air was in chorus of the cries of distant animals around. I checked on the tracker and I can now see that we have traveled 1000 nautical miles already. And if the calculation was right, tomorrow at noon we will arrive at that spot. And I really am hoping for the best luck. I just busied myself checking updates on my social media accounts but none of them caught my attention. But when I opened for the news, there was this report of a friend, a discovery of a parallel universe was the topic. I guess this might not be true. Fake news really lurks the internet now. And the possibility of that news to be true is less than a percent. I clicked the off button of my phone. I have been here for three hours now. I studied the movement of the current and there was no sign of disruption, not even a hint. It was still and the waves were gentle as it laps on the side of the vessel. As I was outside in the depth of the night, my mind wanders as to what will come next. After this, will it be the end? I am so clueless and not a hint crossed my mind to answer my silent question. I made a decision of being captain years ago just like what Dad wants me to be. But my Mom trained me to be like her. A doctor who cures. Maybe after this quest, I can be a doctor too and start living a life they both want. I took a deep breath to clear my mind from the invading thoughts. I let out a sigh and that made me feel better.
