“Hey! Where are we going?” I asked him as I tried to free myself from his grip. But he was just too strong that he doesn’t seem to budge at all. And I saw the light again. And that means we are on the upper deck. And we are going to… the wheel. He will make me drive will he?
“Captain! I never knew we have a girl up here. When we set ashore you get rid all of them. And here’s one…” he then eyed me curiously. And I know that I look like a mad woman right now with my unruly tangles.
“Ask her questions Garett. She keeps blabbering non-sense stuff.” My mouth gaped as I stared at this annoying and weird and ridiculous captain. What non-sense did I spoke? He speaks nonsense here afterall.
“You mean interrogate the lady? What type of interrogation?”
“The usual. We never knew if she’s a criminal too.” The eff? Me? A criminal? My police records were perfectly clean for Pete’s sake. Dear heavens! Help me this time. If looks could kill, I must say that this annoying captain will now be buried six feet under the ground. Garett faked a cough to get my attention.
“So miss, your identity please.” Again and again. I sighed and rolled my eyes.
“Thalia Evie Carter. 23 years old and Captain of Black Eagle. No criminal records.” Maybe they are interested about my police clearance.
“What do you mean a Captain?” he eyed me suspiciously, tilting his head to the right.
“A Captain. Simple as that. I owned the Black Eagle I mean my father did and I had a few quests before. Now what?”
“So if you really are a Captain, can you drive this ship? Command the crew and stuff?” Duh!? Obviously.
“Of course. I always miss the wheel you know. And I just seldom command. My first mate does that. It’s his job anyway. Why, you’ll make me drive until we reach the land?” He eyed me curiously. Trying to figure out if I am telling the truth.
“No. We never let a woman hold her wheel. It’s a bad luck.” He explained to me. Are they insane? Why not let a woman drive a ship? Where is the gender equality in here?
“What are you? People from the past that still believes in the superstitions? As far as I remember, my father let me drive the ship when I was 18. And she was in a great condition ever since.” I blurted out, pointing out my stand.
“So you are the only child, is that right? And your father is a captain too and he let you drive the ship?” Garett clarified.
“Yes. I am the only child of my parents. And as a gift on my debut, he gave me the Black Eagle. But a month later, he and my mom died on a car accident.” He listened intently and I bet he now believes me.
“What is a car?” he asked. Eh? He sure knows what a car is. I mean it is so common. Are they never going upland?
“You see. A car is a land vehicle. Gas powered and where’s my bag? Can you get it for me?” I asked Garett. This is more exhausting than I ever expected. I mean, they can’t be that ignorant right? And I am obliged to answer their question for me not to die. I know, protocols and stuff. I watched Garett’s back as he descended. And I am here, alone with this twerp of a captain. We just stayed silent not until Garett returned with my bag. He then handed it to me.
“So, let me ask you. Who are you?” It is now my time to ask this Captain. But he never spoke.
“He is quiet famous in the seas you know. But you don’t know him. He is the famous William Marcus Valiénte.” Garett introduced the captain. I fished for my phone and it was protected perfectly by the zip lock. And I was happy to see that it has still 50% of its battery to keep it running. I searched over my notes and I found the note about my quest in finding the King of the Captains. His name was William Marcus Rodriguez. But my dad said he was just adopted.
“Well, do you perhaps know William Marcus Rodriguez? The infamous King of the Captains?” I asked Garett that made them abruptly divert their attention to me as if I said something prohibited.
“How did you know him?” he asked in horror. What? Is that information a curse? It is so well-known over seafarers.
“Because that was my mission. To find his sunken ship and take a piece of evidence from it. Why?” I explained to them.
“Holy heavens! How dare you speak ill of the Captain! And his ship is not sunken!” Garett seemed angry.
“What? You mean… William Marcus Rodriguez safely docked his ship in a port but how come they say it is in the Bermuda Triangle? And many took part of the quest.” My forehead knotted in confusion. I saw the Captain rose from his seat and headed to my direction. He then took a grip on my shoulder and I winced in pain. What have I done?
“Ouch! Let me go! It hurts!” I shouted at him, still trying to escape from his powerful grip. But he just angrily stared back at me. The intensity almost made me feel nauseous. His black orbs became dull and intense.
“How did you know my birth name? No one knows about that secret except my trusted crew.” I felt the air temperature dropped as his voice became lethal.
“It is famous among all the seafarers and it’s a deadly quest over all the captains and in the world. Wait. Are you saying that you are the infamous King of the Captains? I know you were adopted just what my dad told me. And your surname now is Valiénte right?” I asked breathing heavily. His grip started to loosen. I catch my breath, panting.
I just now realized everything. Oh my gosh! I time traveled. And I am here. Personally facing the man in my quest and he saved me and I am on his ship. I’m so lucky. I smile and looked up the sun that shone brightly. Hope is really true. I need to take a picture of him.
“Uhmm sir? Can I take a picture of you? Just for a documentation.” I held out my phone and I know I look like a child begging for some candy. This is a great opportunity. Maybe I can take a video of our whole voyage too.
