Delight is the only girls among two boys, Delight was not the kind of girl who fell in love easily. A quiet brilliant girl with big dreams and a fierce loyalty to her family. She was raised by her mother, father and two older brothers, David and Daniel who treated her more like a precious Jewel than a little sister. From a young age, her brothers vowed to protect her from heartbreak, from harm and most of all from boys.

But life as it often does, had other plans. Delight's first taste of love cam in her SSS1 year with a boy named Micheal. He was thoughtful, soft-spoken, kind and a classmate who understood her gentle nature. Their relationship bloom quietly in shy smiles and stolen moment between classes. It was pure, innocent and full of teenage hope. But secrets never stay hidden long. When her brothers found out, they were furious. To them, Micheal wasn't a sweet boy, he was a threat. They forbade her from seeing him again, grounding her and insisting she focuses on her studies. Heartbroken, Delight let Micheal go. She buried her emotions in books and vowed never to let herself fall so easily.

Then came Tobi, Tobi joined her class in SSS 2. He was everything the girl admired- handsome, confident and effortless charming, not gonna lie, he is every girls crush. But to everyone surprise, he was assigned to sit next to Delight. Their friendship began as casual, teasing and filled with banter. Slowly, it deepened. He listened when she spoke, remembered the little things and called her 'Sunshine' when she blushed.

Delight liked him. She really did. But she was cautious. She remembered Micheal and more importantly, she remembered her brothers. But Tobi was persistent, he ask her out several times, and each time she refused, not because she didn't want to but because of her brothers. Eventually, she sat them down and asked them a question that has been building in her heart: 'Why don't you trust me with boys?' The conversation that followed was heated, emotional and long overdue. After listening to her and recognizing that she was no longer a child, they reluctantly agreed to let her make her own decisions. They gave their blessing. When Tobi asked her out again, Delight said Yes.

The relationship was everything she has dreamed of. They studied together, laughed over snacks and walked hand-in-hand through the school compound. They became the school favourite couple, and when prom season approached, Tobi asked her to be his date. Delight was thrilled. She told her brothers, who secretly planned to surprise her with a beautiful dress. When she asked Tobi what she would wear, he always said 'Anything you wear will be perfect.'

On Prom night, her brothers revealed the dress. She cried. It was perfect. The night itself was magical. Delight was crowned the Prom Queen while Tobi was crowned the Prom King. They danced, they laughed, and for a moment everything felt like a fairytale. But the fairytale didn't last. After the dance, the found a quiet classroom to talk and enjoy each other's company. One thing led to another and they kissed, Tobi's touch grew more intense and she stopped him. He begged but she explained gently but firmly that she had promise herself her body to her future husband. Tobi changed after that. The calls stopped. The messages faded. The boy who once said she was his world now barely looked at her. Delight cried in silence and when her brothers asked about Tobi, she lied and said he was busy.

Delight found him kissing another girl behind the school building, she confronted him and he looked her in the eye and said 'You couldn't give me what I wanted. She can.' She walked away, heart in pieces. When she told her brothers, they didn't hesitate. They stormed the school, confronted Tobi and a fight broke out. Delight was left to pick up the pieces but she did. She poured herself into her final examination, focus on her dreams and slowly began to heal. She started writing again- poetry, thought and little notes to herself. Her strength returned piece by piece. Six months after graduation, her cousin invited her to a birthday party. She almost didn't go but something told her she needed a night out. That night she met Eric, or rather re-met him. Eric has been her classmate since primary 5, he was the boy Delight wrote a love letter to when she was just nine years old. A letter she was to shy to deliver herself. So she had asked her friend Joy to pass it to him. Joy later told her that Eric had torn it. Delight never forgot sting. It was her first rejection. The first time she felt humiliated in love, she sworn she would never confess her feelings again. At the party, Eric recognize her first and they laughed over childhood memories. After the party, they began talking regularly. Then when they were on a date, Delight asked 'Do you remember getting a note from a girl in Primary 5?' He replied 'Joy gave me a paper once but she told me it is a joke, so I didn't bother reading it.' They got married happily.

MY NAME IS DELIGHT
My name is Delight. And for as long as I can remember, I’ve been called many things: “the quiet one,” “the pretty one,” “the one with the soft voice.” But deep inside, I’ve always just been a girl trying to figure out what it means to feel loved without breaking herself in the process. I was born into a home that felt like a castle and a prison at the same time. My parents were strict loving, yes, but tightly wound with rules and expectations. Being the only daughter, and the last born, I was both treasured and controlled. I had two older brothers, David and Daniel, twins. Loud, protective, and annoyingly obsessed with “saving me” from every boy who dared to breathe in my direction. They monitored my every move like I was a diamond the world was trying to steal. My dad had a favorite line: “A girl must be kept like gold.” He said it with pride, but it came with a long list of don’ts. Don’t talk to boys. Don’t stay outside too long. Don’t wear anything “too noticeable.” Don’t even think about love. Love, in my house, was a f*******n subject especially for me. But how do you tell your heart not to beat fast when someone says your name gently? How do you silence the butterflies when someone smiles at you like you matter? I first discovered the sweetness and danger of love in junior secondary school. That was when I started noticing the way boys stared at me longer than normal. At first, I was confused. Then I began to understand: my face, my soft voice, the way I walked… it made people notice me, even when I didn’t want them to. Girls whispered around me. Some wanted to be my friend. Others assumed I was proud. I wasn’t. I was just scared, scared of getting in trouble, scared of breaking rules, scared of my own emotions. But everything truly changed in SS1. His name was Michael. He was quiet, respectful, and always had this calm energy about him. Unlike the others, he didn’t whistle or shout when I walked by. He didn’t force conversations or try to show off. He simply… noticed me. One afternoon, he passed me a folded note during Literature class. My heart raced as I opened it. "Hi Delight. You probably don’t know me, but I think you’re amazing. If you don’t mind, I’d like to be your friend." Friend. That word was safe. I smiled. And just like that, a door opened. We started exchanging notes daily, silly questions, class jokes, little compliments that made me blush. Slowly, those notes turned into conversations, and conversations into something deeper. Michael made me feel seen. Not just as the “pretty girl” or “the quiet one,” but as someone with thoughts, fears, and dreams. We never dated officially. We didn’t even call it love. But I would wait for him after class, look for him during break, and smile at my phone like a fool after every late-night text. Of course, I kept it all hidden from my family. Especially David and Daniel. But secrets, no matter how sweet, never stay secret for long. And that’s when the real story began.
