Freedom Alas?!

(Maye's Pov) I ran as fast as I could, my heart pounding in my chest. The sound of vehicles was getting closer, and I knew I had to find a place to hide. I spotted a dense forest ahead and ducked inside. The trees were so thick that the sunlight could barely penetrate. I could hear the vehicles driving past outside, but I knew they couldn't see me in here. I kept running, my lungs burning until finally, I collapsed to the ground, exhausted. I lay there for a long time, catching my breath before I looked up and then it occured to me that I was completely lost. I didn't know where I was or how to get back home. I was sad but free from the hand of Lord Russiavo. Though I wasn't so sure, I didn't want to be back with him again. This time, I'm very sure my head will be cut off if I don't make a reasonable escape. I roamed my eyes over the forest and all I could hear was the chirping of birds and some unknown sounds of animals. I needed to be out of here but how exactly am I to find my way? With the thought of not wanting to be caught up since I knew Lord Russiavo would've sent his men after me, I started walking again, hoping to find a road or a town. I walked for hours, but all I saw were more trees. I was starting to get scared. What if I never found my way home? How I wish I could get to my father before Lord Russiavo catches up with me. How I wish there was a way to get away from this scrub. I was frustrated. I continued my race, walking hurriedly at some point and running when I gathered more strength till I was doing that for hours, but I couldn't stop because the moment I do, I would be causing my own death. When I was sure I had walked from morning to evening through the forest, I settled to reach out to a shelter and by this time, the sun was already down, I knew I had covered some amount of distance. I was already exhausted and hungry so looking for a place to stay overnight was the only best option. Finally, I saw a light in the distance. Without any hesitation, I hurried towards the cottage. It was a small cabin made of weathered wood and with a sturdy roof of red shingles. A small porch ran along the front of the cabin, with a simple wooden bench and a rocking chair. A few potted plants were scattered about, adding a touch of color to the otherwise rustic scene. A single window was set into the front wall of the cabin, and a small chimney rose from the roof. A thin column of smoke drifted up from the chimney, indicating that a fire was burning inside. It was looking cozy and I knew I was safe. I marched forward and placed a knock on the door. It took time before I got a response but the voice came out so low and calm which I recognised to be the voice of an elderly person. Just like I thought, the door was pushed slightly open and a woman who seemed to be in her late sixties popped her head out. The moment the old woman saw me and how I appeared, she gasped and quickly pushed the door open as she rushed out, her face brightening in shock. "I'm sorry ma," I pleaded as I watched her scrutinized through my entire core. I knew a lot of questions were running through her mind. Before I could utter another word, she spun around and hurried back inside. I sighed. Of course, who wouldn't act the way she did seeing me naked outside their cottage. I felt so tired and found my seat on one of the chairs available but before I sat comfortably on it, the door was pushed open again and the old woman walked out. This time, she was holding a robe she had gone in to take. I took the robe she stretched out to me and stood up to put it on. Then I took my seat back as she also did the same in front of me. After gazing large at me, she opened her mouth to speak. "Where are you coming from?" Since I knew this was the question I would be getting, I already got my answer and I gave it to her instantly. "I'm on a run," I answered while she arched her eyebrows at me, wanting more reply. I continued, "I was abducted by some men who placed me on an auction," I revealed. "Holy!" She exclaimed and took my hands as she began to caress them. "I guess you've been through a lot. Do you know your way around here?" The old woman questioned and I shook my head. Then, she let out a heavy sigh, showing the pity she felt for me. "Can you help me find my way around here?" I questioned, wanting a positive answer which I got. "Sure, you have no problem with that. Just let me know where you live and I will find your place for you, okay?" She assured me. "Okay." After some time of telling her the name of where I stayed, she invited me into her house to eat and spend the night. I stepped inside the cottage. It was small and cozy, with a warm fire burning in the heart just like I predicted for just her kind of person. She ushered me to sit on the couch before she made her way into her kitchen. I was grateful to God for helping me out. I went through a lot just to be here. I was relieved to be back from b*****e, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I should escape further as soon as possible because Lord Russiavo would be on the run for me. While I was still thinking of how to find my way back home, the old woman came out with a tray of food and I ate to my satisfaction before she showed me to a room where I can spend the night. I entered the room and collapsed on my bed without any hesitation. I was so tired from my ordeal that I fell asleep almost immediately. • My eyes flung open and I used the back of my palm to scrub it until the itching was gone. Everywhere was blurry at first but then, my lenses cleared out and I was able to view things around me. The image of yesterday flashed through my mind and I let out a deep satisfying breath when I remembered that I was able to escape from Lord Russiavo. But something seemed strange. The room I was in looked completely different entirely. The bed, interior design, clean wallpaper and gigantic chandelier gave me another impression that I had not ended up in that room the night before. It was strange because I couldn't tell what the room in the old lady house looked like but I was sure it wasn't what I was seeing. Few minutes of roaming my eyes all around, my suspicion was confirmed and I almost screamed out of fright. Right in front of me was a big portrait placed on the wall and I recognised the face in the portrait. It was Lord Russiavo. What the hell had happened?! How could he have found me? Different questions began to circulate in my head until I stood up and headed for the door. Just before I could pull it open, someone reached for it from the outside and pushed open, leaving me to hang my hand in the air as confusion took over me. There he stood, my nightmare. A sly smile of defeat plastered on his cheeks and it felt like the world would soon come to an end for me. Was I dreaming? Was I really staring at the person I had been running away from all the whole time? "Hi, runner girl," he waved his hands at me and everything seemed real. How did I get back with him over the night? "Stop!" I yelled at him when he began to pace into the room. My heart, pounding in fear and disbelief. I couldn't explain the scenario. It was just not accommodating. I felt broken. Why have I forgotten who the Mafia lord was? Why have I forgotten that there was no escape for me afterall.
