Elara Pov
"I knew it! You were planning something bad, Elara. You want to have a child with me right away? For what? So you can have a chance to get hold of my family's property?" Alexander angrily asked me. He heard that it wasn't me who said those words but my friend, yet he was still angry at me. It is really ingrained in his mind that I am a bad woman, so whatever he hears, even if it doesn't come from my mouth, he will think the idea came from me.
"Don't be mad, Alexander. I was just joking with Elara. She would never do that to you." My friend immediately defended me against Alexander.
"Really? She wouldn't do that?" He gave me a mocking look. "Didn't she endure being humiliated in front of many people just to confess her love for me before?"
I secretly gasped and clenched my fists as he reminded me of that past I was trying so hard to forget. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes for a few seconds to calm myself. When I opened my eyes, I felt better and boldly met his gaze.
"Don't worry, Alexander. I won't get you drunk. I don't need to do that just to have your child. I even managed to marry you, so why wouldn't I be able to have a child with you?" Instead of showing him that I was angry, I gave him an irritating smile. I knew he would be extremely annoyed by what I said and would think of me even more as a bad woman, but I no longer cared. At least through teasing or saying words that would anger him, I could somehow retaliate for what he did to me before.
I was right in my thoughts. Because when Alexander heard what I said, his face darkened even more, and he quickly approached me. He firmly grabbed my shoulders and shook me hard.
"Remember this, Elara. You will never succeed in whatever you're planning to do. I will never touch you, so don't expect to have a child with me. Because it will never happen even in your wildest dream," he said through gritted teeth.
I gave him a challenging look. "Really, Alexander? Just wait for it. You'll be surprised that I'm already pregnant. Because I successfully r***d you." I teased him.
I removed his hands that were gripping my shoulders. I was already hurting from his tight grip as his fingers almost dug into my soft skin.
"Shameless, gold digger!" Alexander said, full of disgust, before leaving us without a word and storming out of the room where I was.
Liam clapped loudly when Alexander was no longer inside the room. "Very well, my bestie. That's what you should do. Annoy him. Anger him. Show him that you're no longer the Elara who is easy to get hurt by him."
I took a deep breath and shook my head. "What I did will only make my stay in his house more uneasy."
"Why don't you just make him fall in love with you, bestie? Who knows, maybe you are really destined for each other? Surely your children will be handsome and beautiful when your genes are combined."
"Stop with your suggestions that don't help me." I shook my head firmly. "Do you think that man will love me when he still sees me as a gold digger?"
"The question is, will you still love him despite what he did to you before and despite his bad opinion of you?" Liam asked with raised eyebrows. It seems he wants to catch what I truly feel for Alexander now. He knows how much I liked Alexander before. But he also knows how painful my first love was.
"Since he hurt me, I promised myself that I would never love again, Liam. I don't want to get hurt anymore."
Liam was about to answer, but the door of the room suddenly opened, and my mother-in-law entered carrying what looked like an expensive bouquet of fragrant and beautiful flowers.
"How are you feeling, Elara? You really worried me."
As Alexander's mother entered the room, she immediately handed me the flowers and sat at the edge of the bed.
"I'm okay now, Mom. Sorry for worrying you. And thank you for the flowers."
I didn't let the woman know that I felt awkward calling her "mom". As much as possible, I didn't want her to find any reason to change her mind and take back the promise that she would cover all my parents' expenses while they were abroad.
"Don't think about that anymore. What's important is for you to get well so you can go home with Alexander. You should be on your honeymoon now, but here you are in the hospital. How will you have a child right away like this? I want to have a grandchild by next year," said Alexander's mother with a mix of worriedness and hopeful looks.
Liam and I exchanged meaningful glances. It's a good thing that the mother and son didn't meet inside the room. If they had met, my mother-in-law would have witnessed how her only son treats me. She might change her mind and look for another woman who can give her a grandchild. My father would be pitiful if that happened.
"Don't worry, Mom. I'm not sick. I just got a bit overwhelmed, that's why I fainted. I assure you that next year you'll have a grandchild." I secretly winced at what I said. It seemed as if what my mother-in-law wanted was so easy to achieve and that I could fulfill it right away.
"I will count on that, Elara," my mother-in-law said, her smile widened, evidently pleased with what I said, which made me feel a bit guilty for her. The woman just wanted to have a grandchild because it seemed like her son had no plans of getting married. I was curious about where Isabella is now and why the two separated. "Wait, why isn't your husband here? Didn't he visit you?" She frowned as she remembered her son.
"Alexander was here earlier, mother. He just went out to buy some fruits outside." Liam quickly answered Alexander's mother.
"It's good that he came to see you here. I thought he would ignore you. I thought he was still angry with me for forcing him to marry you," my mother-in-law said, seemingly relieved.
"With how beautiful my best friend is, it's impossible for your son not to notice her," Liam said with a raised eyebrow.
The lady took a deep breath and her face suddenly turned sad. "Ever since he and Isabella broke up, he seems to have lost interest in dating other girls."
"What was the reason Alexander and his girlfriend broke up?" I became curious even more.
"And why are you asking why Isabella and I broke up?" A voice came from the open door that Alexander's mother hadn't closed.
Oh, man! This guy really has good timing every time he enters the room.
