Chapter 8

Elara Pov I swallowed my saliva when Alexander entered the room with a dark expression. I didn't expect him to come back after our conversation earlier. "It's good that you're here, Alex. Take care of your wife because she's too shy," my mother-in-law said smilingly to her son. I'm thankful that Alexander's dark expression suddenly changed when he faced his mother. Maybe he doesn't want his mother to see him disappointed, so he's forcing himself to remain calm in front of her. "Are you sure your daughter-in-law is shy, Mom?" Alexander replied to his mother with a smile. The kind of smile that seemed to say his mother was mistaken in thinking I was timid when in fact, I was shameless. But it seemed his mother didn't notice what Alexander wanted to convey or maybe she just ignored it. "Yes, of course!" my mother-in-law quickly replied with a smile. "The truth is, she wanted only the godfather and godmother, you and me, to celebrate this wedding. But I couldn't refuse our relatives and other friends who wanted to attend because they wanted to see how beautiful your wife is. And did you know they find Elara very beautiful? Of course, would I choose a daughter-in-law who isn't beautiful?" his mother proudly told her son. Alexander gave me a look, but I quickly avoided his eyes. I don't know why, but I felt embarrassed because of his mother's praise. "I already talked to the doctor who checked on Elara and he said she can go home now. I've also paid her hospital bills," Alexander changed the topic. Then he took the flowers I was holding and my wedding dress that was placed on the chair. The nurse had dressed me earlier so I could breathe properly. "That's good so you can go home and start your honeymoon." It seems my mother-in-law is more excited about our honeymoon than Alexander and I are. "Am I going to Alexander's house?" I know we will live under one roof, so I already prepared myself before the wedding. But now that I'm about to go to his house, it feels like my courage suddenly disappeared. I don't want to live in his house. I gave my friend a pleading look to oppose and suggest that I go to Alexander's house tomorrow instead. But instead of helping me, he agreed with what my mother-in-law said after winking at me. "You're right, mother. They should go home to their house so they can have their honeymoon and you can have a grandchild right away," Liam said with a wide smile. I shot him a glare while my mother-in-law wasn't looking at me, but Alexander caught what I did. He just furrowed his brows and didn't say anything. Alexander's mother decided not to go to her son's house, and Liam excused himself, saying he had a meeting with a client even though he didn't. So, Alexander and I were left alone in the car. We didn't speak inside the car, so there was an overwhelming silence and an awkward feeling. But I had no intention of talking to him first, so we might as well let our mouths dry out. It seemed like he couldn't stand not talking to me, so after fifteen minutes, he finally spoke. "What's your reason for marrying me, Elara? I don't think you still have feelings for me because I don't feel it." I secretly smirked. It's good that he realized that thing. "Whatever your reason is for agreeing to marry me, that's also my reason," I answered safely. My mother-in-law told me never to let her son know about our marriage in exchange for a large sum of money to treat my father. Alexander glanced at me briefly but didn't speak. He fell silent again, so the silence prevailed inside the car until we arrived in front of his house located in an exclusive subdivision. I wasn't surprised that he lived in an exclusive subdivision because I had known for a long time that his family was wealthy. How much more now that he is in charge of all their family businesses after graduating? Alexander's car stopped in front of the gate, and he immediately got out of the car as if he were alone. I silently followed him. Two maids and a man greeted us. The man quickly took Alexander's car keys to hang them on the rack behind the stairs. "Mercy, take her to her room," he instructed the maid before going up the stairs without a word, presumably to his room. I felt slightly embarrassed in front of the two maids because Alexander didn't even introduce me to his household staff as his wife. I didn't know how to act in front of the three of them. "So you are Ma'am Elara, the wife of Sir Alexander?" said the maid named Mercy with a smile. "I am Mercy and this is Belen. The two of us clean the whole house. And this is Dindo, the gardener who also cleans outside the house." "You know me?" I wondered why they knew me when Alexander hadn't mentioned my name. He also didn't know that I was the woman he was going to marry because he only found out this morning that I was the one he was going to marry. "Don't be surprised why we know you, Ma'am Elara. Ma'am Faustina told us your name," answered Belen, who, like Mercy, was also smiling. It seems that Alexander's helpers are kind. I won't have a hard time getting along with them. "Come on, Ma'am Elara. I'll take you to your room," Mercy said to me. I don't know why they don't seem surprised that I'll be sleeping in a different room even though Alexander and I are already married. "Elara. Just call me Elara. Please don't call me ma'am. It makes me uncomfortable." I gave them a smile so they wouldn't feel uneasy addressing me by my name. "Sir Alexander might scold us," Dindo replied hesitantly. "How about this? We'll only call you by your name when Sir Alexander isn't around." I just smiled and nodded at them before joining Mercy to go to my future room. The room Alexander gave me was large and beautiful. I expected him to make me sleep in the maid's quarters to make it difficult for me and force me to divorce him willingly. "Don't hesitate to give us orders, Elara. You're Sir's wife, so you're also our boss now," Mercy said with a smile when we entered the room. "By the way, Sir Alexander has a cook at home. His name is Miguelino. He's grumpy, especially when he's cooking and when you touch his things. Even Ma'am Faustina doesn't touch anything in the kitchen because of Miguelino. Only Sir Alexander can handle that big guy's grumpiness." I smiled at him slightly and nodded. "Thank you for the information." "I'll leave you now because I have something to do. If you need anything, just look for us downstairs." After Mercy left, I looked for the closet. It turned out to be a walk-in closet. I wasn't surprised when I saw my things inside the closet. I was sure that my mother and Alexander's mother brought my things from my house. I heard a door close, so I suddenly came out of the walk-in closet. When I came out, I saw Alexander standing near the sofa with a serious face looking at me. "What do you need?" I asked him seriously. Don't tell me he's going to fight with me again so he came here? Instead of answering, he tossed a white folder onto the small table. Frowning, I picked up the folder and looked at its contents. "Contract agreement." I softly whisper after reading what was written on the white paper.
